Nighttime single-lane closures will be in place Monday night through Saturday morning from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Work will continue on Vermont Route 9 (Western Avenue and High Street), U.S. Route 5 (Canal Street and Main Street), Vermont Route 30 (Linden Street) and Vermont Route 142 (Vernon Street). Flaggers will be present to direct one-way alternating traffic through multiple work zones. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces. All motorists should be aware of raised utility structures and wet paint.

Parking restrictions will be enforced during working hours. Pedestrians should watch for sidewalk detours.

Charlie Kirk did not ‘die’. Mr. Kirk was assassinated by a single sniper shot to his jugular vein.  He was, to all who knew him, a powerhouse exemplifying freedom of speech. Selectboard Meeting Notes – Groundworks Update and How To Decide How To Govern

The Brattleboro Selectboard held their first regular meeting in over a month. Top issue was Groundworks, who came to give an overview of recent stats and projects. People seemed most interested in a new project to build 40 beds near Morningside, and safety issues.

The other big discussion was about possible changes to the Charter. The results of the 2.5 years of Charter Revision Commission meetings were somewhat enhanced and overshadowed by members of the public being confused, asking to slow down, wanting consideration of other options such as certified petitions, potential petitions, special and regular meetings, informational meetings, educational programs, and legal issues.

The board made the firm decision to wait until their next regular meeting, not the listening session, to decide whether to discuss putting it on an agenda at a meeting in October to consider holding a special election on November.

I’m still trying to get a straight answer from the Vermont Secretary of State Elections Division about how to legally start a new minor political party in VT.

Update on Williams Street Retaining Wall Project

The Town of Brattleboro is providing an update on the ongoing Williams Street retaining wall project. As construction continues, traffic patterns in the project area will remain altered for the duration of the work.

The western spur of Williams Street and Western Avenue will remain closed.

Reception for VT Watercolor Artists

Twenty artists from the Connecticut River Chapter of Vermont Watercolor Society will exhibit their work at All Souls Church in the West Village Meeting House from September 7 through November 30. The public is invited to an opening reception on Sunday, September 14, from 3 – 5 p.m. Beverages and light refreshments will be served. The reception is free and open to all.

With more than 240 members, the Vermont Watercolor Society is dedicated to promoting the awareness and appreciation of watercolor to its membership at all levels of ability and to the larger community by providing opportunities and venues for participation, education, fellowship, and exhibitions.

On The Way To a Meeting

On the way to a meeting …

To the Editor: On the way to a meeting, I encountered a 90-year-old retired businessman.

We talked about shoes and he talked about the past and what he hoped to do today.

I winced when the conversation turned to current politics and when he praised President Trump’s agendas. We disagreed. However, we continued to talk. We seemed to agree on two issues: that monopolies in the telecommunications sector is a negative; and, that government oversight of the health insurance industry is a benefit to the people. We need more of these types of conversations and interactions.

Save A Life – Windham County Heat Fund Concert

The Windham County Heat Fund is presenting a concert on Sunday, September 14 at 7:00 p.m. at the Heart Rose Club (formerly Shriners’ Hall), 11 Green Street in Brattleboro. It might seem that the title for our event is an exaggeration, but it is not.

Earlier this year Trump fired all of the people who administer the funds for the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The funds, about four billion dollars, were thought to be available but there will be no one to administer them. I have contacted state and federal officials and no one knows what the status of the LIHEAP program is.

Brattleboro Selectboard Agendas Sept 9 and 11, 2025

The Brattleboro Selectboard will hold two meetings the week of September 8th – a regular meeting and a listening session.

Tuesday’s regular meeting features the presentation by the Charter Revision Commission regarding a new draft charter and an update from Groundworks.  The Thursday listening session is for the public to weigh in on the upcoming budget for FY27.

You can bring up other items not on the agenda at both meetings, but only the regular meeting will have the livestream and zoom elements. You have to be there in person to participate Thursday.
