Brattleboro — The River Gallery School in Brattleboro will hold an informational meeting on Thursday, November 12, for those interested in participating in its April art trip to Andalucia, Spain. The meeting will take place from 6:00-7:30 pm the art school at 32 Main Street in Brattleboro.
The River Gallery School tour will includes a week of making art and exploration of the Spanish countryside. Pleine air painting sessions will be led by Mary Giammarino, a frequent instructor at River Gallery School workshops and a well known local artist.
The trip will be held from April 2 to 9, 2016 and led by Cicely Carroll of Travel Fever Tours in Putney.
The Brattleboro ADA Advisory Committee will meet on Friday, November 13, 2015 at 10:00am at Marlboro College Graduate Center in the VCIL conference room.

The next monthly meeting of the West Brattleboro Association (WBA) will be preceded by a potluck supper held at the home of Tom and Cecile French, 123 Juniper Ridge Road, on Thursday, November 12, at 5:30 PM. Members of the WBA and guests including West B residents and business owners are invited to bring something to share with their neighbors and join in the meeting afterward.
After a review of the treasury report and updates on the status of welcome signs and the outdoor cinema initiative, the WBA will talk about having their annual Holiday Party in December.
Initiating a West B Welcoming Letter will also be on the agenda in addition to discussion about whether to and, if so, how to seek new money to support the Neighborhoods Fund.
The Brattleboro Selectboard will be holding a big party Tuesday night. Just kidding. They will be holding a special meeting to begin discussion of the FY17 Budget, and to quite possibly adopt new Land Use Regulations for the Town of Brattleboro, an event that last occured in the 1980s. So perhaps there will be a party of some sort.

We took a walk in the Retreat Woods recently as a way to get back into nature without having to go too far. It had been a while since we last went — probably in the early summer sometime. The trails were already too wide then, but this last time, it was obvious they had seen some hard wear.
In most places, the main paths were down to hard-packed bare earth, with lots of trippy rocks and tree roots pushing up that I don’t remember being quite so much in evidence before. The softer, smoother top layer of earth seems to have been worn away.

BRATTLEBORO, VT — The Brattleboro Museum & Art Center (BMAC) is now accepting submissions for the 2016 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, a prestigious national recognition initiative for teenagers with exceptional artistic and literary talent. Vermont students in grades 7-12 are invited to submit art and writing entries in dozens of categories, including ceramics, digital art, painting, photography, poetry, humor, science fiction, personal essay/memoir, and more. The submission deadline is December 16, 2015. A historiographical reexamination of The Battle of Bennington.
The Windham Wood Heat Initiative (WWH) will hold a free public information forum on modern wood heating systems on November 16 from 5:30 – 7:30pm at the Marlboro College Graduate Center in Brattleboro. Modern wood heating systems are low emission, high efficiency systems that provide much of the convenience of conventional fossil fuel boilers—without the fossil fuels. Heating with locally sourced, sustainably harvested, and renewable wood pellets provides numerous environmental, economic, and social benefits. These systems come in a wide range of sizes adaptable for residences as well as large commercial operations.
A few atypical work items were undertaken by the Brattleboro Selectboard at Tuesday’s meeting. These are things that boards do, but just not that often.
The board bought and sold property, announced a new library director, held a close-out hearing on a Brooks House grant that got a bit heated, and contemplated long-term strategies for staffing and economic development. Plans for public meetings on the Police-Fire project’s latest form were also set, and more.

Al will be in town on Thursday, November 12th and he’ll be using the Brooks House as the backdrop for his forecast. We want to give him a big Brattleboro welcome – please come downtown and join in the fun! Al is scheduled to roll into town at 9pm, but the welcoming celebration will begin in Pliny Park at 8:30pm. (Yes, he’ll be here in the evening.)
On Thursday, November 5, Route 30 under I-91 will be closed from approximately 6:00AM to 8:00 PM to ensure the safety of the traveling public when we pour concrete for the new bridge in a location above Route 30.

Brattleboro–Area youth bands will compete at Youth Services’ Battle of the Bands at the River Garden on Friday, November 6, during Brattleboro’s Gallery Walk night, from 7 to 10 p.m.
The public is encouraged to attend and vote for their favorite group with their applause. Competing bands to date are: Negative Space, The Regulars, Wicked Thirsty, Raspberry Jam, Sometime Sunday, and Nomad vs. Settler. Opening the event will be a performance by the indie-rock band Snaz, which helped get their start as winners of the Battle of the Bands in 2012.
