Meet the library’s new Job Hunt Helper, Danielle Braverman! Danielle will help library visitors use computer technology for job and career-related tasks like preparing resumes, exploring careers, and completing online job applications. Contact the Reference Desk to make an appointment with Danielle, or just drop by during her regular library hours: Tuesdays 10:00-1:00 and Thursdays 1:00-4:00.

Danielle’s services are provided through a partnership between the Community College of Vermont and the Vermont Department of Libraries, with funding from the J. Warren and Lois McClure Foundation and the federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Samirah Evans: How the heck did I get to VT? A musical memoir to benefit Brooks Memorial Library. Please join us on Friday, Nov 4, 2016 at 7 pm to hear a spectacular voice and celebrate a Vermont – and world – treasure.

Samirah’s live performance repertoire runs the gamut from raunchy blues to jazz smooth as silk. She has often been compared to Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson, and Etta James. Like many jazz and blues artists, Samirah dedicates time to perpetuating indigenous American music. She was a long time participant in the Blues Schoolhouse program sponsored by the International House of Blues Foundation. She also served as a volunteer show host on the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage radio station, WWOZ, for over ten years.

The 14th Annual Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) Celebration and Community Altar will take place during November Gallery Walk, November 4th, from 5:00-7:00 at Experienced Goods Thrift Shop, 77 Flat St. in Brattleboro. Inspired by the Latin American holiday when families gather to honor loved ones who have died, staff and volunteers from Brattleboro Area Hospice create an Ofrenda, or large community altar. You’re invited to bring an item to lay on the Ofrenda to honor a loved one.

The Main street canal has been dredged out this week, about six inches of deposit being scraped up and carted off. Common report has it that a charter for the “Brattleboro Canal company” is being drawn up and that its passage will be asked of the legislature permitting navigation to be opened between the Vermont National bank corner and the junction of No. Main and Asylum streets.

Selectboard Meeting Notes – Pedestrians, FY18 Budget, and Banning Single Use Plastic Bags

The Brattleboro Selectboard attended to multiple pedestrian and traffic safety matters, allocating a substantial amount of money for new flashing signs and other safety devices for about town.

The board received their introduction to the FY18 budget, they decided to endorse a WSWMD budget with no Materials Recycling facility included, discussed where to send recycling if we close our recycling location, and determined that money would likely be saved as a result.

Banning single use plastic bags will require a petition to become an ordinance, Brattleboro would like a new firetruck, and we have the second best police department in the world!

WRC Grant Program Supporting Community Scale Renewable Energy Releases RFP

The Windham Regional Commission (WRC) has released the Request for Proposals for the newly developed Windham County Renewable Energy Grant Program. The Vermont Clean Energy Development Fund awarded $400,000 to the WRC to develop a funding program to support renewable energy projects in Windham County. The program will focus on small-scale projects. Award amounts begin at $10,000 with a maximum of $320,000.

Project Feed the Thousands 21st Annual Fundraising Kick-Off November 4, 2016

Brattleboro, Vermont – On the morning of Friday November 4th, Project Feed the Thousands Campaign will kick off its 22nd annual food drive. The launch will take place at Brattleboro’s Price Chopper Supermarket on Canal Street, in the morning with a live broadcast hosted by longtime media supporter, WTSA 96.7 FM followed up by and afternoon launch at Brattleboro Food Cooperative in downtown Brattleboro, hosted by another generous media supporter, WYRY 104.9 FM.

“The community goal this year is to raise $90,000 in cash, as well as to collect enough provisions for 200,000 meals.” Reports Jeff Morse, Project Co-Chair and President of River Valley Credit Union. Various businesses and individuals, in conjunction with Project Feed the Thousands, will be accepting non-perishable food, personal care items and cash donations. All campaign contributions will then be distributed to many area food shelves to help thousands of people who struggle with hunger throughout southeastern Vermont and southwestern New Hampshire.

Brattleboro Rail Forum on Nov. 9

Transportation Board holds Brattleboro Forum on Rail

The Vermont Transportation Board at 6 p.m. on November 9 will hold a public forum in Brattleboro on transportation policy associated with trains, both passenger and freight. The Board wants to discuss railroad related issues with the public – including rail-side economic development and the possible initiation of commuter rail service to Massachusetts – to determine how future policy can be shaped to best position Vermont’s rail interests to meet the needs of the state residents.

The forum, which will be held at the Brattleboro Museum & Arts Center at 10 Vernon Street, is one of seven such public conversations the Board is holding around the state. Topics the Board plans to discuss include:

“We’ve been working for months on a new design for The Reformer, which includes a wider page, larger text, bigger ads, sharper pictures, heavier paper, better-organized content and much more! All this — along with a new website — starts on Tuesday, November 1.”
