Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes – October 4, 2016

The Brattleboro Selectboard will be discussing things at their next regular meeting, They will discuss the Comprehensive Review of Town Operations. They will discuss the Long Range Financial Plan, the Windham Solid Waste District Assessment, the Police and Fire projects, and more.

They also might act to do a few things. They might proclaim Indigenous People’s Day. They will likely loan Cultural Intrigue $70,000, schedule a new process for evaluating Bittersweet Lane, and accept money for the planned dog park at Living Memorial Park.

You can attend, participate, and bring up other items not on the agenda. It’s at the Municipal Center on Tuesday, as usual.

WRC Receives Funds for Adams Brook Restoration Final Design

The Windham Regional Commission (WRC) is pleased to announce that it has secured funding from the State of Vermont, Agency of Natural Resources, Department of Environmental Conservation, Ecosystem Restoration Program, for developing final designs for restoration of 200’ of Adams Brook in Newfane.

Following the Tropical Storm Irene flood of 2011, bed armor treatments were applied to approximately 200 feet of Adams Brook in Newfane, VT. These treatments resulted in significant impacts to aquatic resources which continue to occur today. The depth, sizing and gradation of bed armor were not appropriate and the transition to and from natural streambed elevation was too large and too abrupt.

Chimera – A Physical and Ethereal Presence

(huffingtonpost.co.uk) Story: An exhibition entitled Slow currently on show at the China Exchange in the heart of London’s Chinatown. It’s a commission from an arts initiative called Shaire, based in London, Singapore and Beijing in which interdisciplinary groups are invited to explore the broad theme of nature.The most eye-catching exhibit in Slow is by the internationally acclaimed American sculptor, Brattleboro local, Aaron Distler. [Aaron Distler is the son of Arlene Distler, Brattleboro’s longtime art critic.]  It comprises what looks at first like a large caterpillar but, in fact, is a Chimera, a mythical fire-eating dragon (above) that supposedly vanishes when you look at it. So it has both a physical and ethereal presence about it.

In the spring of 1909, the completion of a new hydro-electric dam in Vernon created at 28 mile long lake, from Vermont’s southern boarder with Massachusetts to Bellows Falls, as waters began to back up and subsume much of the river-adjacent countryside. On average, the water level rose 30 feet and eventually flooded more than 150 farms. Among the lands subsumed by permanent flood waters were a series of petroglyphs sites near the confluence of the West River and Connecticut River dating from a precolonial epoch, in the lands now known as Brattleboro, Vermont.

In August of 2015, after a 30-year search, underwater explorer Annette Spaulding found one of the petroglyph sites, subsumed in 1909 and unseen by persons for over a century.

Brattleboro Early/Absentee Ballots, Voter Registration and Town Clerk Hours

Early/absentee ballots for the General Election to be held on November 8, are now available in all Vermont town clerk’s offices. Anyone wishing to vote prior to November 8, may apply for an early/absentee ballot until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 7.

Early/absentee ballots may be voted in person in the clerk’s office, mailed to the voter by the clerk’s office, picked up by the voter or delivered to the voter’s residence by two justices of the peace. All voted ballots must be received by the clerk before the polls close on election day in order to be counted. For more information or to request an early/absentee ballot in Brattleboro call 251-8157.

I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project Update: Week of October 3rd

I-91

Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge. The new bridge will be 104’ wide and is designed to carry all four lanes of traffic –two northbound and two southbound.

To reduce congestion on I-91, both Exit 3 on ramps will be closed on Sunday, October 2nd, from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. I-91 will remain open.

Route 30

The speed limit on Route 30 near the work zone has been reduced to 40 mph. Project-related truck activity on Route 30 will continue. Route 30 may be reduced to a single lane intermittently, with flaggers regulating traffic within the work zone.

When I was a kid there was a game called ‘Barrel of Monkeys’. It consisted of a plastic cup filled with a bunch of little multicolored simians with limbs that interlocked. The object was to lift and hook arms forming a chain with as many as possible. At least that’s how I remember it. This recollection corresponds to an image that was once broadcast on the Daily Show, of Jon Stewart presenting his writer’s room. The shot was inside a racquetball court, behind a glass wall, the space stuffed with people, hipsters mostly, cheek to jowl, practically climbing over each other. Let these images serve as illustration and introduction of my point.

I lived in Putney for twelve years and watched iBrattleboro grow to the strong site it is. I’ve since moved away to a similar sized city withOUT a citizen journalism/community portal site. I tried to sit by idly and pretend I didn’t care, but alas, I really wanted something similar. So, what did I do? I created my own site for my new city, it’s called Ashland Talks.

Ashland Talks has been live for almost two months and we’ve received some community member submissions, but it is still largely me posting news. I don’t expect the site to take off over night, but it did get me to start wondering: what is it that draws people to iBrattleboro.com? What do you all like to publish here that you don’t just post on Facebook or Nextdoor?

Vermont Jazz Center Presents: Caili O’Doherty Quartet (Emerging Artist Series)

Acclaimed Pianist and Composer, Caili O’Doherty to Perform at the Vermont Jazz Center on October 1st

On Saturday, October 1st at 8:00 PM, the Vermont Jazz Center will present the Caili O’Doherty Quartet as part of their Emerging Artist Series. O’Doherty is a young, highly acclaimed pianist who hails from Portland, Oregon. She will be performing with her working Quartet, three of whom appeared on her recent recording “Padme,” which won NPR’s 2015 Jazz Critics’ Debut Album Award. Caili is a virtuosic talent as both a composer and pianist – she has received national awards for jazz piano performance and composition from Downbeat Magazine as well as an ACAP Foundation Young Jazz Composer Award.

Jewish New Years Begins

At sundown on Sunday, October 2nd, Jewish people all over the world will welcome Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish year 5777. Rosh Hashanah begins a sacred period known as the Days of Awe that culminates ten days later on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, observed this year on October 12th.

Daniel Kasnitz, President of Congregation Shir Heharim, announces that the Brattleboro Area Jewish Community will offer Rosh Hashanah services beginning at 7pm on October 2nd at the West Village Meeting House of All Souls Church on South Street in West Brattleboro, and continuing there the next day at 9:30 am. The traditional second day of services will be offered at the congregation’s synagogue at 151 Greenleaf Street in West Brattleboro, on Tuesday morning at 9:30 am.
