Gallery at the Garden Features Two New Exhibits in November

The Gallery at the Garden in downtown Brattleboro features two new exhibits for the month of November: “The Golden Cage,” an exhibit of photographs and interviews focused on Vermont’s dairy farmers and migrant workers, and “The Beauty of Relaxation,” with creations by Maureen Mansfield.

The gallery is located at the Robert H. Gibson River Garden, home of Strolling of the Heifers, at 157 Main Street. The gallery will be open during Gallery Walk (Friday, November 6, 5:30-7:00 p.m.). Normal November hours will be Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (except during special events at the River Garden).

Here’s the official 2015 Cedar Street Halloween Costume list. Apologies in advance for anyone we missed (the rush of crowds is tough to document), and thanks and congratulations to all the 230+ kids who had such great costumes this year.

Trends seem to indicate wild animals, cats, ninjas, and law enforcement are as popular as princesses. Ghouls and zombies are in a slight decline.

Note: It’s getting so the parents costumes are now almost as plentiful as costumes for kids. This list is almost all just kids.

I Discovered A New Way To Fix A Dripping Faucet

There was a leak from the bathroom sink’s cold water tap, which dripped to the floor, making a steady “tick, tick, tick” sound. The drip was intermittent, so I could wipe the water off the floor, and not hear it for awhile but it would always soon begin again.

Every so often, I checked the floor, but seeing no water I put it out of my mind. A couple of days went by with no leak. But then, in a quiet moment, I thought I heard something. I stopped, and listened. Yes, there it was… a faint, “tick, tick, tick.” Clearly the two-day reprieve was too good to be true: The leak was back.

One of the challenges of being creative is finding space, time, and confidence to create.

Confidence is quite important. We all have to get over fears of making mistakes, including our fears of the blank page, the rough draft, or getting into a rut.

Most creative people I talk to tend to notice their previous mistakes, while those around them don’t see those mistakes. Can we every really be confident about our own creations?

There’s also the question of what sort of mistakes we might feel we are making. In some cases, we should be proud to be at such a high level in our craft to be able to worry about “advanced” mistakes in our work. In other words, it takes great time and effort to be able to reach the point where we are able to make certain mistakes.

Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda & Notes – November 3, 2015

At their first Tuesday meeting in November, the Brattleboro Selectboard will consider overfilling the police department staff positions in an effort to help better retain and recruit new police officers.

The board will have some land transactions to undertake, will annouce committee vacancies, re-annouce meeting dates, and will have a discussion of economic development strategy. You can bring up other items not on the agenda during public participation at the start of the meeting.

I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project Update: Week of November 1

We will schedule two single-day closures of Route 30 in the immediate vicinity of I-91 in November– one the week of November 1 and another in mid-November. These closures are to ensure public safety as we conduct work on the new bridge above Route 30.

Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge. The new bridge will be 104’ wide and is designed to carry all four lanes of traffic –two northbound and two southbound.

Annual Siren Test Scheduled For Area VT., NH and MA Towns For Nov. 7 At Noon

On Saturday, Nov. 7 at noon, state and local public safety agencies will conduct an audible sounding of the 37 sirens within the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant’s 10-mile emergency planning zone.

The full three-minute siren testing is conducted by Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts state public safety agencies in compliance with the regulations of the Federal Emergency Management Agency to ensure the effectiveness of the public notification system.

Vermont Yankee ceased operations on December 29, 2014.

RT 30 Closed Today (Oct 30)

Reminder: On Friday, October 30, Route 30 will be closed from approximately 5:00AM to 8:00 PM to ensure the safety of the traveling public when we pour concrete for the new bridge in a location above Route 30.

This work is weather dependent, and may need to be rescheduled, if inclement weather prevents a concrete pour on Friday.

Brattleboro Area Hospice to host Dia de los Muertos Community Altar during Gallery Walk

Brattleboro Area Hospice is excited to host its 13th annual Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) Celebration and Community Alter on November 6th, from 5:00-7:00PM at Experienced Goods Thrift Shop, 77 Flat St. in downtown Brattleboro VT.

The event is inspired by the Latin American holiday, Dia de los Muertos, a time when families gather to honor loved ones who have died. In keeping with this tradition, staff and volunteers from Brattleboro Area Hospice create an Ofrenda, or large community altar that will be available at Experienced Goods Thrift Shop. The public is invited and encouraged to bring a meaningful item to lay on the Ofrenda to honor their loved one. (Please use photocopied pictures and objects of no great value as items cannot be returned.) Colorful papers and pens will be available to write memorial notes to leave on the altar. Activities for children will take place at the event. This celebration can be particularly meaningful for children; a way for them to express their connection with and memories of a loved one who has died.
