Statement on Trump Executive Order Suspending Refugee Admissions, Impact on Afghans in Vermont

Burlington, Vt – The Vermont Afghan Alliance released the following statement in response to the Trump Executive Order suspending the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program:

“All of us at the Vermont Afghan Alliance are devastated to learn of the Executive Order suspending entry of refugees into the United States under the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP), including Afghan refugees awaiting relocation to the United States.

Brattleboro Overnight Snow Removal in Downtown Parking Lots

Snow and ice will be removed from the parking lots in Brattleboro’s downtown area tonight, January 22, 2025, after 11 p.m.

Parked vehicles in the downtown parking lots must be removed or they may be towed at the owner’s expense. If you plan to leave your vehicle in town overnight, please park it at the Brattleboro Transportation Center. If you use the Transportation Center, do not park in a reserved permit space without a reserved permit. Parking enforcement is in effect after 9 a.m.

Selectboard Meeting Notes – People Are Mad At Us For A Lot Of Different Reasons

The Brattleboro Selectboard decided that a 12.1% increase is the best that they can do, ignoring  members of the public and the Finance Committee who said it wasn’t enough but agreeing with the Town Manager who said the increase was necessary to avoid chaos.

One theme throughout the evening was that of continual eroding trust in the selectboard and their decision-making. “People are mad at us for a lot of different reasons,” noticed Chair Daniel Quipp. “We should think about it.  Do we always have to make them a little more mad?”

A sub-theme was extreme agitation about representation at all levels of town government.

Weird meeting. If I were a Magic 8 ball I’d suggest “outlook not good.”

Brattleboro Fire Department – Fire at Fulflex on Jan. 20

At 20:45 on January 20, 2025, the Brattleboro Fire Department was dispatched to 32 Justin Holden Drive (Fulflex) for a fire alarm activation. The first arriving crews found moderate smoke in the commercial structure. Shortly thereafter, Captain Casabona reported a fire in the machine room with a possible extension into the exhaust system. With this information, the incident was upgraded to a second alarm.

Brattleboro Water Main Break on Putney Road

Utilities crews are on the scene of a water main break on Putney Road near the M&T Bank Operations Center.  Staff is assessing the situation and will provide updates as soon as possible.  Water pressure throughout the system has been affected.  Traffic on Putney Road between Town Crier Drive and Noah’s Lane will be restricted.  Motorists should seek alternate routes.

Is It Time To Change Tradition?

Many years ago there were poor farms run by local towns where the needy people in a community would find help and shelter. I have also heard stories from older Vermonters that when the legislature had House members elected from every town that some towns would elect the most indigent among them to be legislators so they could be safe and cared for during the winter.

Another tradition started, and I don’t know when, but it has persisted in many communities in Vermont. I suspect other places around the country may have some variation of this. In Brattleboro, Vermont we have a Human Services Committee that reviews applications from local non-profits and then allocates funding from the town budget. There has been wide support for the town using tax money to support non-profits.

Trump’s 2nd Inauguration on Martin Luther King’s Birthday – Both Spoke Against U.S. Regime Change Wars

Noting a Coincidence 

As it turned out, Trump’s 2nd Inauguration as President of the United States of America falls on Martin Luther King’s birthday, a federal holiday (King being the only American to be presently so honoured). Interestingly, both had spoken against U.S. regime change wars, but whereas King paid for his outspoken condemnation of America’s atrocity wars with his life, Trump, though initially denouncing the regime change wars as money better spent at home, once in office, seemed to have dutifully served the deep state industrial military complex in its wars and violent foreign policies just as every other U.S. president since Franklin Roosevelt.

WSESD January 21st Board Appointment

The Windham Southeast School District (WSESD) Board has received letters of interest  from three candidates for the vacant seat on the Board. Any individual appointed to the open seat on the WSESD Board must be a resident of Dummerston and will hold the position until March 2025. A new member of the WSESD Board will then be elected on March 4th, to complete the remainder of the term, which is through March 2026.
