Brattleboro Savings and Loan, and the Confederate Flag Check Logo

A few months ago when I was reordering checks from Brattleboro Savings and Loan, I looked through the possible options for a logo/symbol to put on them, and came across a confederate flag as one option.  I contacted the bank to ask if there was a check company I could deal with that didn’t offer that as I did not want to support such a company. 

My request was not received with the most understanding response, and I was quite concerned that my bank did not understand my concern.  I let it slide, and tried to find a company on my own, but soon realized it would take me a long time to go through all the other companies and their choices, and gave up and went back to Harland-Clarke, through BS&L.  Then, the horrible mass shooting/murders in South Carolina happened, and the nation focused on the issue of the flag.  I decided I could not sit by any longer. 

Town of Brattleboro Approves $27,000 to Support Apartments In Homes

BRATTLEBORO – On May 19th, the Brattleboro Selectboard approved $27,000 for use over the next three years by the Apartments in Homes (AIH) program, an initiative of Brattleboro Area Affordable Housing (BAAH). The funds will be used to create nine new apartments in single family homes in Brattleboro by providing grants of up to $4,000 ($3,000 per unit from the Town and $1,000 from BAAH) to assist with the cost of constructing a separate living unit within their home.

Rt 30 Closing July 9 Morning For I-91 Bridge Work

On Thursday, July 9, from 3:00 AM to 11:00 AM, a short section of VT Route 30 (where it crosses beneath I-91 in Brattleboro) will be closed. The closure is planned so that the project team can erect “traveler form” equipment that will be used to construct the new I-91 bridge in Brattleboro. Traveler forms are forms used to construct segmental cast-in-place concrete bridges.

It’s Time to Register Students for Hebrew School!

It’s not too late to register children in the Brattleboro Area Jewish Community Hebrew School. Congregation Shir Heharim (Song of the Mountains), the Brattleboro Area Jewish Community, offers a once-a-week religious school for youngsters from the age six up to thirteen or older.  The school offers a vibrant child-centered program that teaches Hebrew language studies as well as songs, stories, prayers, holiday observances, customs and traditions, history, current events, and all things Jewish.  Students can begin school at the age of six.  Anyone who is planning to become a bar- or bat-mitzvah must be enrolled for a minimum of two years.

setting a new ticket sales record at Soldier Field. The legendary rockers are in the middle of their three-night “Fare Thee Well” concert series. Friday night’s concert sold more than 70,000 tickets, beating U2’s record of nearly 67,000 in 2009. Last night’s performance was also sold out, though it hasn’t been announced whether that also set a ticket record. Tonight’s show promises to be epic as it will be the Dead’s last performance ever. R.I.P.”

Reminder: July 5 Exit 3 On Ramp Closure and Other Upcoming Closures

On Sunday, July 5, both the Northbound and Southbound Exit 3 On-Ramps will be closed from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM to reduce congestion on I-91 Southbound caused by merging traffic. Because of highway logistics, we need to close both northbound and southbound on-ramps. Local southbound traffic will be rerouted to Route 5 south to Exit 1, and local northbound traffic will be rerouted on Route 5 north to Exit 4. Sheriff officers will assist in directing traffic.

Weekend Comedy Series: Pat Paulson For President

“A common, simple savior of America’s destiny.” So begins this documentary, performance piece, political satire, and campaign.

Pat Paulson was a very droll comedian, often seen giving editorials on the Smothers Brothers’ tv series. At some point, he decided to definitely not run for the presidency, and this film shows his non-efforts along his lack of a campaign trail as he doesn’t work his way toward the White House.

Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes – July 7, 2015

At their first regular meetiing in July, the Brattleboro Selectboard will hear from the Downtown Brattleboro Alliance, (formerly the Downtown Alliance, formerly Building a Better Brattleboro,) about their plans for a proposed park in Harmony Lot.

The board will also set the tax rate for FY16 property taxes, appoint the Our Town phase III screening committee, get an update on Pay As You Throw, have a discussion about “Entergy money,” and more. You can attend in person or watch on BCTV. You can also bring up other items not on the agenda during public participation.

SeVWA’s 2015 E. coli Monitoring of Local River Sites Continued July 1st

The Southeastern Vermont Watershed Alliance (SeVWA) had its second monitoring day for the summer of 2015 on Wednesday, July 1st. As you may recall, a large thunderstorm came through our area Wednesday morning which coincided, rather unfortunately, right with our sampling time. Some volunteers were out before the storm moved through, but about half our sites were not tested due to the inclement weather. Our volunteers are a valuable asset and we never want to risk their safety to get a few water samples!

          Bacteria levels tend to spike following a heavy rain event when more water falls on the ground than can be infiltrated, or soaked into, the ground and it runs off directly into rivers and streams taking everything loose on the ground with it. In the case of impermeable surfaces such as concrete, pavement, and compacted sand or gravel, no water can ever infiltrate and always becomes runoff when it rains.

The Case of the Missing Newspapers

Every Wednesday I deliver about 4000 copies of “The Commons”, a weekly newspaper which is familiar to most of the people reading this. 

This Wednesday, something very mysterious happened – most of the papers I delivered have disappeared.

It is as if someone was following me around and removing the papers from the racks I filled just a few minutes before.
