FOMAG Has Cancelled the 2021 Messiah Sing

For those who may not have heard the news already through other media, Friends of Music at Guilford tried to plan a Messiah Sing for this December but with rising COVID statistics, we decided it wasn’t worth the gamble, even with protocols in place. To quote from the FOMAG Facebook post…

Well, we hoped and we tried. We had the venue reserved, we had a conductor and keyboard and soloists. We felt optimistic as things were opening up late summer / early fall. We worked on protocols for preregistration, contact tracing, proof of vaccine, limited seating, even debated about proof of negative COVID tests. We held off on making any go / no-go decisions as long as possible. But those accursed COVID statistics have just been getting worse and worse.

Brattleboro Selectboard Meeting Agenda and Notes – December 7, 2021

Traffic safety and recommendations for improvements to the Representative Town Meeting will be discussed at the next regular meeting of the Brattleboro Selectboard. New bike lanes, LED stop signs, and a request for a crosswalk are all in the mix for Tuesday.

The board will continue to provide free operating space for some local businesses who’d like to have larger establishments, and they’ll approve a correction to a very old piece of Town information.

You can bring up other items not on the agenda during public participation.

Royal Road Sidewalk – Public Meeting

The Brattleboro Department of Public Works will hold a public meeting regarding a project which will connect the sidewalk between Royal Road and Downtown. ASL interpreters will be available for deaf and hard of hearing community members.

The Brattleboro Human Services Committee will meet on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at 1:00pm in the Selectboard Meeting Room at the Municipal Center (230 Main Street).

The Brattleboro RTM Finance Committee will meet on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at 5:30pm at the Brooks Memorial Library Mezzanine Level Meeting Room.

Traditionalists here are missing the old animated history calendar for the month of December. We are, too.

There is good news to report, though. A group of programmers has been working to build a Flash emulator to play old Flash-based content. The Internet Archive is using their work to preserve old Flash files, and they are also making it available to the rest of us. 

COVID’S Bigger Lessons

It is two years since the emergence of the first versions of the COVID virus. The world was slow to figure out what was going on and even slower to figure out ways to deal with this new deadly disease. Despite all of the technology and science that we have developed over the years, COVID continues to make fools of the humans who are trying to beat it.

On the surface it may seem that the best way to contain COVID and to make it less of a threat to humans is to develop effective vaccines and get those vaccines to as many people as possible. It sounds like a simple plan and it makes sense from a scientific perspective.

Brattleboro Petitions, Election Schedule, and Consent of Candidate Form for March Elections Now Available

Petitions for Brattleboro Town Officers, Windham Southeast School District (WSESD) Board Members, and Town Meeting Members are now available at the Town Clerk’s office.  Town elections will be Tuesday, March 1 at the American Legion, and the Annual Representative Town Meeting will begin on Saturday, March 19, location and format will be announced at a later date.

Petitions for Town Officers and WSESD Board Members must contain at least 30 valid signatures of registered Brattleboro voters and be filed in the clerk’s office no later than 5:00 P.M. on Monday, January 24 in order to have their name placed on the ballot.

At a secret session, the United States Congress ordered the arrest of Col. Samuel Wells forcing him to flee Brattleboro.

Seems that Colonel Wells, an early developer of Brattleboro and a loyalist to the King, had to escape to Canada during the Revolutionary War.
