Show in Memory of Jamis Lott Opens at River Gallery School January 2nd

River Gallery School will display the work of Jamis Lott, artist, puppeteer, maskmaker, and philosopher, throughout January with a public opening during Gallery Walk. Jamis, along with his father Steve, was killed recently in Townshend. He was 28.

Since early childhood, Jamis had an exceptional interest in and talent for art. Along with his friend and teacher, Margaret (Missy) Stearns, he worked on art projects exploring his vivid imagination. When he was a child, she helped him collage a giant dragon, which hung for years in his family’s kitchen. They remained close and important friends throughout Jamis’ life.

The Panominousican

When Jeremy Bentham, in the 18th century, devised his ingenious architectural structure to revolutionize detention, little did he know that his idea would infiltrate every aspect of society. The simple premise of a central eye which sees everything, yet itself remains unseen, may have had a precedent in religious order, but aside from the Illuminati symbol which later appears atop the American dollar bill, no such mechanism was actually in place in any edifice near or far.

The Panopticon was designed to change schools, hospitals, asylum, and all manner of buildings committed to reform. However, execution was impractical, and its realization hardly employed.

Where Does The Story End?

I was noticing how different various classic Christmas tales would be if the ending was chopped off. The carefully crafted endings to the favorite tales are crucial to us enjoying the story and coming back to it year after year.

The ending is typically where the lesson is learned, growth occurs, good overcomes evil, and so on. Not if you lob off the ending, though.

Here are some examples:

Look to the Skies

For any skeptics and scoffers out there, I would say that you should consider looking to the skies tonight, sometime after 6 PM. Our best psychics on the faculty at the University of Brattleboro, (the Oldest Non-Existent University in New England) when the UFAUXs are expected to materialize, somewhere above Elliot or Flat Street.

Weekend Concert Series: Frank & Bing

Seems like time to feature some Frank and Bing singing Christmas songs, in glorious “something-color.”

Classic haircuts, suits, and decorations are part of what makes this a fun holiday special that, for some reason, never made it to classic status. Maybe we can give it a boost 60 + years later.

Booker T. Washington’s Pencil

From today’s Phoenix, December 15, 1899:

“Before the appearance of Booker T. Washington in the Auditorium a Brattleboro girl read that he always carried a lead pencil in his right hand when delivering an address. When he came up to the stage she looked for the pencil, and there it was.

Weekend Concert Series: James Brown, April 1971, Bologna, Italy

This is a truly funky line-up, and perhaps my favorite era for James Brown. Everyone in the band was great.

We have Bobby Byrd, backing up James on vocals. We have the horn section that included Fred Wesley, Darryl Jamison, Chicken Gunnells. We have young Bootsy and Catfish Collins, Cheese Martin, and two drummers Jabo Starks and Tiger Martin.

This film isn’t great quality, but it has it all: funky suits, dances, and breaks, plus crazed Italian fans, and what seems to be Sophia Loren’s sister acting as a narrator in parts. My Italian isn’t so good, but she was talking about Sonny and Cher for a moment. If any of you can translate, please share/Cher…

Larry Bloch and Wetlands Preserve Remembered

If you missed the Sunday Keene Sentinel, here is a. At Larry’s request, his first wife and “dream companion,” Laura Bloch Bourque, gathered together the many boxes of carefully saved calendars and photos of their nightclub into one amazing book which must be seen to be appreciated. Bands such as the Dave Mathews Band, Phish, Hootie and the Blowfish and so many others played at Wetlands Preserve in the 1990s.

The Sentinel article tells about the love that went into the writing and publishing of the book. The book itself is for sale at Everyone’s Books on Elliot Street in Brattleboro and Toadstool’s in Keene and Peterborough, NH
