Sept. 13th, 1863

 Dearest wife,

I commenced a letter to you yesterday. I believe that I dated it the 11th by mistake for the
days have all been so mixed up since I left home that I can hardly tell whether September or October. I had just commenced writing, when there was a call for Co. to fall in, every man to bring his blanket, where we were standing sometime and then dismissed. The trouble was a careless fellow had lost his blanket, then calling out
every man with his blanket left a good chance to search the tents, it was found. The same this morning, some fellow lost his cap, but there was not time enough left to write.

Kurn Hattin’s Bianconi Makes List of Top 25 Semifinalists for Grammy Music Educator Award

Lisa Bianconi, Music Director at Kurn Hattin Homes for Children, has been chosen as one of 25 semifinalists from across the U.S. for the first-ever Music Educator Award presented by the Grammy Foundation® and the Recording Academy®. The 25 semifinalists, music teachers from 24 cities across 15 states were officially announced on September 11. In total, more than 30,000 initial nominations were submitted from all 50 states. Bianconi is the only nominee from New England to make it to the semifinals.

Weekend Concert Series: Black Sabbath, Live in Paris 1970

Black Sabbath are the pioneers and progenitors of Heavy Metal. Along with Deep Purple, Zeppelin and Judas Priest they created an entire genre of music.

Formed by Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward in 1968, Black Sabbath were light years ahead of their time. Their first album was written in 1969 and is a timeless masterpiece. The opening track “Black Sabbath” still sounds heavy, ominous, and ahead of its time in present-day. 

Black Sabbath tackled heavier and darker subjects than their counterparts at the time. In an era when people were singing “Are you going to San Francisco with flowers in your hair?” Black Sabbath were writing songs like: Children Of The Grave, War Pigs, and Hand Of Doom.

Taking Power: Photographs from the People’s Movement to Shut Down VT Yankee

The work of three outstanding photographers’ is on exhibit through the end of October at the Elliot Street Cafe.  From Grace Paley confronting executives on Wall Street in 1977 to babies in the “Leaks, Lies, and Lawyers” parade in March 2013, the photos document decades of grassroots activism to shut down Vermont Yankee. The echibit is sponsored by the Safe and Green Campaign.

Poetry to the Earth: The Arts & Crafts Movement in Deerfield

Please join us on Wednesday, September 11, at 7 pm in the Library’s meeting room for a discussion by Suzanne Flynt, Curator at Memorial Hall Museum on her recently published book, Discussion with Suzanne Flynt, Curator at Memorial Hall.

A 1903 article in Gustav Stickley’s The Craftsman declared that “Deerfield is sending all over the country beautiful things…to bring back something of lost poetry to the earth.” This book will appeal to aficionados of American folk arts, decorative arts, textile history, and the Arts and Craft movement. Suzanne Flynt, curator of Memorial Hall Museum, has authored the story of this beautiful Massachusetts town that shows how Deerfield played a pivotal role in the American Arts and Crafts movement.

Fiction and Poetry: New Works by Wolf, Benoit, and Butterfield

Novelist Muriel Wolf, and poets Barbara Benoit and Charles Butterfield will read from their new works on Tuesday, September 10, at 7:00 p.m. in the meeting room at Brooks Memorial Library.

Wolf will read from her debut novel, “The Book of Gone.” Her book has received agent representation and is making the rounds of publishers.  Her short story, “The Chocolate Errand,” won Best Short Fiction Prize from Boulevard Magazine and was finalist in the Crazy Horse short story competition.  She is at work on her second novel.  A visual artist, Wolf’s monotype collages were on exhibit at the Catherine Dianich Gallery last winter.

In search of one word or short sentence that is a positive representation of Brattleboro.  Brattleboro is known for Estey organs, strong art community, nudism, sweet water, the first large town of Vermont, and the strolling of the heifers.

Twisted Soul Sista’s Chocolate City on WVEW

I want to send a shout out and note of appreciation to Twisted Soul Sista, host of the fabulous WVEW 107.7 FM show called Chocolate City. I discovered this show this summer and have fallen in love. If you are a fan of old school funky tunes you should be tuning in each Saturday from noon to 2 pm.

Chocolate City show takes me back and reminds me of hot summers in the city in the 1980’s. I feel like I’ve tuned in one of the great, big R&B stations in NYC, DC, Cleveland or Detroit. It is non-stop funky fun and perfect for dancing around while doing Saturday chores.

Extras Needed for Filming This Week

Film extras are needed for this coming week including Sunday, September 8th and all week from 9 AM to 5 PM.

“Chasing Rainbows” is a locally made film that will have an international cast and will be submitted to film festival in the U.S. and Europe. Writer-Director Robert Fritz’s film are winning awards at festivals. Be a part of his next project.

No previous acting experience is necessary. Ages 18-108 welcome.

In my opinion John Belushi playing Joe Cocker is the funniest video of all time.

At Woodstock in 1969 Joe Cocker delivered this performance of his rendition of the Beatles’ “With A Little Help From My Friends.” Joe Cockers’ passionate performance sounded great, but his stage antics are utterly bizarre and ridiculous. Watch this video first.

“What If” Brattleboro and Mary Cabot at Brattleboro History Center

The Brattleboro History Center invites everyone to come see new exhibits during Gallery Walk this Friday evening and throughout the month of September.

One new exhibit is a collaboration with the Brattleboro Planning Services called “What If” Brattleboro – An Exhibit of Unfinished Plans” and shows a collection of planning documents for Brattleboro projects that were never built or only partially completed.
