Brattleboro Citizens’ Breakfast – Home Energy Challenge – Notes

Brattleboro Citizens’ Breakfast, March 15, 2013, Gibson-Aiken Center – Brattleboro VT

Presenter: Tad Montgomery  –  ecological engineer, principal of  and member of the Home Energy Challenge and PACE sub-committees of the Brattleboro Town Energy Committee.

Tad began by asking the audience of about 25 people whether they had done energy efficiency retrofits on their houses since 2007.  About ? had. He noted that statewide it is 5.6%, or about 1% per year.  At that rate it will take 100 years to get to the 20%-30% goal the state has set for itself by 2020.

An Intriguing Way to Encourage Local Spending – Property Tax Credit for Dollars Spent Locally by Residents

With recent discussion here about how to keep local dollars in Brattleboro, I’m hoping someone here in Brattleboro might read about this exciting option and run with it!  Apparently this program incents residents to shop locally at participating businesses who provide % credit for purchases (via a card), which is then applied to the purchaser’s property tax bill (renters receive a yearly rebate check instead.)  The program is a win-win — local businesses get increased patronage, residents are rewarded for shopping locally, and as I understand it, the decrease in town revenue from the property tax credit is directly offset by the increase in taxes paid by healthy, thriving local businesses.

Another Loss for Brattleboro – Adivasi

I was saddened to hear that ADIVASI will be closing it’s beautiful store on Flat Street. It hs always been a favorite place of mine to pick up an unusual gift or a beautiful tablecloth while supporting independent artisans. This is a huge loss for our town. I wish the family well.

One of the Best Little Towns!

Brattleboro has been named one of the 10 best towns in the US by Fodor’s magazine! Despite all our problems and all the complaining it’s still a pretty good place to live. Also included in the top 10 was Provincetown, Massachusetts- one of my favorite places to spend time.

If you’re interested in saving the River Garden for public use, or even if you aren’t, please read these statements excerpted from the record of the Brattleboro Selectboard meeting of December 5, 2006 – the topic at hand was whether or not the Town should ask the State Legislature for “forgiveness” of a restriction attached to the first State grant of $150,000 used to purchase the land where the River Garden now stands, which stated that the Town or BaBB would have to pay the Legislature back those funds were the River Garden ever to be sold to a private individual or a for-profit entity. The ‘suitor’ or prospective purchaser of the property at that time was Tony Elliott’s Windham Development Group, LLC, the recent renovator of the Windham Hotel in Bellows Falls.

Welcome back to “Ask-a-Cop.” This is an official question and answer feature on ibrattleboro set up a few years ago. It is written by a Brattleboro police sergeant and all answers are approved by Chief Wrinn before posting. We haven’t had questions in a while but got this one the other day.

If you have a question for Ask-a-Cop, please email it to and put “Ask-a-Cop” in the subject line.

“If I’m aware of domestic abuse problems with another couple, am I required to report it? How can I tell if it is worth reporting?”

Public Talk – Introduction to Psychosynthesis

There will be an introduction to psychosynthesis on the evening of Wednesday, March 27th, at 6:30 p.m. in Brattleboro. The program includes a brief presentation on the principles of psychosynthesis, along with some experiential exercises and an overview of training opportunities in the field.

Psychosynthesis literally refers to the synthesis of the many aspects of the self into a more complete and whole experience of being. Developed by Dr. Roberto Assagioli, a contemporary of Carl Jung, psychosynthesis is used in the fields of counseling, mental health, social work, education and other related fields of human development.
