Renovations Begin in the Latchis -Theatre Fund Raising Goal Only $62,000 Away

The theatre is dark, the Earth is bare and Latchis Arts is reaching for the Heavens.  

The main theatre of the Latchis complex closed for renovations on August 1 and on that day, all 750 seats in the theatre were cleared from the auditorium.  Day 2 brought New England Scaffolding Co. to begin the task of filling the 30 foot high void with scaffolding high enough to reach the signs of the zodiac residing in the Heavens.  “We are thrilled that the seats and ceiling project is underway,” said Latchis Arts managing director Gail Nunziata.  “Months of planning with architect Jeremy Coleman and fund raising for the Campaign for The Heavens and The Earth by board and committee members have brought us to this moment.”

Harris Hill Ski Jump Wins Jumping/Nordic Combined Club of the Year at USSA Congress

Brattleboro, Vt. — The Harris Hill Ski Jump committee, which manages the annual Harris Hill Ski Jumping Competition in Brattleboro, was awarded Jumping/Nordic Combined Club of the Year at the 2013 U.S. Ski & Snowboard Association (USSA) Congress. The annual USSA Congress awards not only clubs but coaches, athletes and resorts who display exemplary service to the sports of skiing and snowboarding.

Peter Graves, former Putney resident, Harris Hill committee member and snowsports announcer, and currently Communications Director for USA Ski Jumping, accepted the award on behalf of the organization at the Congress which was held in Park City, Utah in late May.

Vermont Jazz Center’s 38th Summer Jazz Workshop and Concerts

For 38 years, the Vermont Jazz Center has presented its summer jazz workshop, encouraging students from down the street and around the world to hone their improvisational and musicianship skills while enjoying respite in a beautiful, country setting. The VJC’s summer workshop crystallized and attained non-profit status in 1974 when founding director, Attila Zoller officially organized the informal gatherings of guitarists he held at his home in Newfane. To this day, the VJC honors Zoller’s spirit and attention to quality, retaining many of the faculty who played alongside him. There exists a natural, intergenerational balance where participants of all ages learn from each other, gleaning from both the wisdom of jazz’s “old school” and the pedagogical advancements put forth in today’s developed system of jazz education.

As promised, the main theatre closed on August 1 and all the seats left the building that day. It was amazing!

Day 2 brought the scaffolding crew and they set to work, so that by Day 5 (today) they have reached the Heavens in some spots! What an achievement.

Many thanks to those of you who already donated to Latchis Arts’ Kickstarter Campaign as we continue to collect pledges toward the goal of $50,000 in 60 days for our seats and ceiling project.

Harmony Lot Tunnel Will Be Closing

The Town of Brattleboro has been notified by representatives of Bread Loaf Construction, working on behalf of Mesabi Inc, that the Harmony Lot underpass will be closed to public access on August 6, 2013 at 6:00am. The closing is necessary to maintain public safety during the yearlong redevelopment of the Brooks House. It is anticipated that the underpass will be closed for the duration of the project.

AAUW To Hold Used Book Sale

Hundreds of used books will be on sale Thursday, Aug. 1 beginning at 9 a.m. to benefit the local scholarship fund of the Brattleboro branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW).

The sale takes place at Centre Congregational Church on Main Street in Brattleboro, Thursday until 5 p.m.,Friday until 6 p.m. and Saturday until noon, when all books are half price.

At Brattleboro Farmers Market: Zora Quartet Plays Bosnian Music; Free Plant Walk

BURLINGTON, Vt., July 28 – Saying that “it’s time for new leadership at the Federal Reserve and a new approach to our troubled economy,” U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today urged President Obama to appoint a new central bank chairman who will “put the needs of the disappearing middle class ahead of the interests of Wall Street and the wealthy few.”

Sanders said Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz or former U.S. Labor Secretary Robert Reich would be “excellent candidates” to replace Chairman Ben Bernanke when his term ends next January 31.

Twilight on the Tavern Lawn Presents Simba on Sunday, July 28

Twilight Music continues its 11th annual Twilight On The Tavern Lawn series of folk, world beat, rock, jazz, zydeco, Celtic, swing, blues and bluegrass summer concerts on Sunday, July 28 with southern Vermont based funk and world beat band Simba. Downtown Disruptions in Brattleboro

A section of the Whetstone Pathway near the Co-op is closed today for pavement repair. This is work left from the Co-op project. The Pathway will reopen tonight and close again tomorrow to finish the repair. We apologize for the lack of notice.

The work disrupting traffic in the downtown area is the phone company (Fairpoint) lowering a few of their manholes so our snowplows do not hit them in winter.
