ACWC is pleased to announce the award of $15,000 through the Brattleboro Town Arts Fund to support six community-focused creative initiatives. The six grantees were selected from a competitive field of 39 proposals received in this first year of the Town Arts Fund (TAF) program. View the full press release.

The March 3 Academic Speaker Series event at Landmark College has been canceled due to illness at the request of the presenter, Amanda Stern. The College will work with Ms. Stern to reschedule the event at a later date.
The Brattleboro Women’s Chorus will begin their spring session with open rehearsals the first week of March. To celebrate the 100thanniversary of women’s right to vote, the theme of the songs will be of strength, solidary, and suffrage. Following the Chorus’s concerts in May, those who choose to can join a repeat performance of several songsat WomenSing100, a singing gathering in honor of women’s strength and voting rights to be held in Worcester, MA in August.
Open rehearsals are for any women or girls age 10 and older to check out with no obligation whether Chorus is right for them. The Chorus has been under the direction of Becky Graber since 1996 and is unique in that much of the music, even multiple and complicated parts, is taught by ear. Written music is available on occasion, but practice recordings and word sheets are always provided to help with learning.

Mark your calendars for our Brattleboro VFW Post #1034 Corned Beef Dinner/Dance Saturday March 14th. Find your saddle shoes and poodle skirts at the back of the closet because CJ the DJ will be playing tunes from the 50’s and 60’s from 7pm-11pm. Doors open at 5 pm, and the corned beef meal is served at 6 pm.

The board of the Windham Southeast Supervisory Union (WSESU), the supervisory union made up of Vernon and the four communities of the Windham Southeast School District (WSESD), is seeking a diverse group of parents and community members to serve on our upcoming Superintendent Search Committees. The Superintendent Search Committees will work to screen applications and interview candidates with a goal of recommending a list of finalists for the WSESU board’s consideration.
The Windham Southeast School District Amendment and Policy Committee will meet at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, March 2, 2020 at the WSESU Central Office, 53 Green Street, Brattleboro.
Are you interested in joining the 2020 cast of Can Windham County Dance? Have you ever imagined yourself dancing in the spotlight? Would you enjoy performing in front of a live audience? Are you looking for a way to positively influence the lives of young people and families in Windham County? If you answered yes to the above questions, Youth Services wants you!
Youth Services is organizing Can Windham County Dance?, its third annual gala with a goal of $20,000 raised to strengthen the safety net for area young people and families. This spring, Can Windham County Dance? gala will take place on Saturday, April 25 at the Hilltop Montessori campus in Brattleboro. Four dancing numbers are confirmed but the organization is looking for 2-3 more.
Can Cops Cook is a family-friendly cooking competition hosted by Safe Place Child Advocacy Center. This year, in addition to our usual Law Enforcement participants, we have also invited members from the Brattleboro Fire Department, Probation and Parole, Rescue Inc, DCF, and the Windham County State’s Attorney’s Office. It will be an event with some stiff competition!

The Windham Southeast School District Board will meet at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26, 2020 at the Putney Central School, 182 Westminster Road, Putney.
Mount Island is excited to announce that the Vermont Partnership for Fairness and Diversity (VPFD) and Vermont African American Heritage Trail—an initiative of the VPFD— have donated a total of $150 toward the Lucy Terry Prince prize. Celebrated poet Major Jackson, who lives and teaches in Vermont, will serve as judge for the inaugural Lucy Terry Prince Prize. Major Jackson is the author of five books of poetry, including The Absurd Man (2020), Roll Deep (2015), Holding Company (2010), Hoops (2006) and Leaving Saturn (2002), which won the Cave Canem Poetry Prize for a first book of poems. The donation will cover the $10 entry fee of 15 poets of color seeking to submit their work for consideration.

There are two three-year seats that are contested for the merged school district. These seats will set the tone for the next few years. So far the merged (against our will) board has done a tremendous amount of work with much more to come. Seven of the eight members of the current board were strongly against merging which helped this first year of operation to be collaborative rather than contentious. This sense of collaboration is critical for our merged schools to not become like many other areas of the state.
The Vermont Jazz Center welcomes Bobby Watson and Horizon on Saturday, February 15th at 8:00 PM. Watson, on saxophone, will be joined by Rising Stars Jazz Award-winner Giveton Gelin on trumpet and a rhythm section comprised of members of the original group: pianist Edward Simon, bassist Carroll V. Dashiell and the legendary drummer Victor Lewis.
Horizon is a supergroup that performs straight-ahead, acoustic, hardbop music. According to band leader Watson, his composing style and the group’s sound is influenced by Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind and Fire, and Sly and the Family Stone. Horizon does not play covers, they definitely play jazz.
I just heard via NPR, that a single admission to Disneyland costs just $209, 00.

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. – The Brattleboro Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) is again offering scholarships of up to $1000 each to qualified female candidates who are residents of Windham County.
Both graduating high school senior girls and mature women continuing their higher education are eligible to apply. Applications will be judged on academic performance, extra-curricular activities, community involvement, and financial need.
Join us Saturday February 22, 2020 at the VFW in Brattleboro located at 40 Black Mountain Road for Winter Cornhole indoors! It’s $25 per team of two people to play with a limit of thirty two teams. All skill levels are welcome to play.
