Emma’s Revolution Concert Oct. 25 To Benefit CASP

They’re back! — Emma’s Revolution will return to All Souls Church on Friday, Oct. 25, at 7:30 p.m. with a concert to benefit the Community Asylum Seekers Project (CASP).

Pat Humphries and Sandy O, the duo that makes up Emma’s Revolution, were among the many musicians who performed for the sold-out Pete Seeger 100th celebration at the church back in May. They are returning to lend their enthusiastic support for CASP, whose mission is to provide basic needs and a supportive community for those in the process of seeking asylum in the United States.

BUHS Turf Field Discussion

On Wednesday, October 16th at Dummerston School at 6:00 p.m., the Windham Southeast School District (WSESD) School Board is scheduled to discuss the resurfacing of Brattleboro Union High School’s (BUHS) Natowich Field. The focus of the field portion of the meeting will be on BUHS’s proposal to resurface the field using artificial turf.

Guilford Play Seems Eerily Familiar

For its fall production, Guilford Center Stage will present a staged reading of”It Can’t Happen Here” by Sinclair Lewis. There will be three performances October 18-20 at Broad Brook Community Center in Guilford.

Todd Mandell and Richard Wizansky will direct a cast of 11 community actors in this adaptation for the stage by Tony Taccone and Bennett S. Cohen.

BCTV Announces Winners of the 2019 Producer Awards

BRATTLEBORO, VT—In honor of Community Media Day on October 20, Brattleboro Community Television announces its producer awards winners for 2019. BCTV’s annual producer awards ceremony will be held on Thursday, October 24th at 6:00 p.m. at 118 Elliot. The public is invited. The People’s Choice Award winner, which is a popular vote among the year’s top-viewed videos, will also be announced that night.

Brattleboro Indigenous Peoples’ Day Closings

 In observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, all Town offices will be closed on Monday, October 14, 2019, with the exception of emergency services. 

Parking is free at all metered spaces and in the pay-and-display lots on Sunday and Monday, October 13 and 14, 2019. All other violations will be enforced. 

Hoping For A Camaraderie of Justice

There is a new kind of camaraderie that has developed among people who feel that standards of justice, morality and fair play have been lowered to an unconscionable level by Donald Trump. Those lower standards have not only affected Americans but they have colored political activity throughout the world. Hopefully, once Trump is out of power, those standards will be somewhat restored.

The new comrades of the 21st century have created something akin to a massive support group because they feel the need to share their pain. Many have resorted to professional therapists, and if anecdotal evidence is close to statistical fact, the number of people who have sought therapy since Trump was elected has risen significantly.

Celebrate Heirloom Apples at Scott Farm Orchard: 17th Annual Heirloom Apple Days— Now Two Days!

Due to the popularity of this annual harvest event, Scott Farm in Dummerston, VT, has extended Heirloom Apple Day, now in its 17th year, to two days on Sunday, October 13 and Monday, October 14 from 9-4pm!

Apple lovers of all ages are invited to come to Heirloom Apple Days and visit the 571-acre historic farm and orchard to experience some of the 130 varieties of heirloom apples grown there—fresh, baked and squeezed!

In addition to the popular heirloom apple talks and tastings, dry stone wall tours by The Stone Trust, and food vendors; new activities are in store for families such as make-your-own caramel apples and a scavenger hunt.

WEST BRATTLEBORO, Vt. – The duo Emma’s Revolution will present a concert to benefit the Community Asylum Seekers Project Friday, Oct. 25 at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church at 7:30 p.m.

   Emma’s Revolution is the dynamic, award-winning activist duo of Pat Humphries and Sandy O, whose songs have been sung for the Dalai Lama, covered for Holly Near and praised by Pete Seeger.

   With beautiful harmonies and genre-defying eclecticism, the performance will include tributes to Seeger, a friend and mentor to the duo.

Vermont Jazz Center Presents: Nicholas Payton + Cyrille Aimée Duo

 The Vermont Jazz Center welcomes Grammy-winning trumpeter Nicholas Payton and vocalist Cyrille Aimée to the stage in a duo performance on Saturday, October 12th. Payton will perform on trumpet, acoustic bass, piano and Fender Rhodes; Aimée will sing and, at times, use a looping device to layer her vocals. Individually Payton and Aimée are two of the most creative musicians on the scene today, but as a duo their collaboration synergistically expands the perimeters of improvisational music. They spontaneously interact or push each other, sometimes delving into material from the American Songbook, other times exploring new sonic textures or hypnotic grooves.

The docs said I had a blocked coronary artery (just like Bernie) and recommended a stent.

Why I Endorse the F-35 (Fubar-35) Sort Of..

There is a big NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) brouhaha about the F-35 being stationed in Burlington, Vermont. The plane has certainly lived up to its appellation as Fubar-35 (finagled up beyond all rationality) and the environmental pollution and deafening noise are certainly factors to consider. Lockheed Martin and the Pentagon know the plane is a disaster; nevertheless, it’s a bonanza for the Military Industrial Mafia who profit from it: Pratt Whitney, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin and hundreds of military suppliers. Contrary to reason and rationality, bring this noisy mechanical economic failure here to our Green Mountain State!

Goldilocks Galaxy

Monday, November 4, 2013 was Islamic New Year. It was also the day the journal “Proceedings of the National Academy of Science” published the results of calculations based on sun-like stars in our galaxy.

The estimate of the number of planets similar in size and temperature to Earth (what astronomers have dubbed the ‘Goldilocks Zone’ – not too hot, not too cold, but just right for life to evolve) was 8.8 Billion!
