Brattleboro: Safer Streets Forum

Please plan to come to Brattleboro: Safer Streets Forum tomorrow night, Thursday, May 5th at the River Garden between 5-7:30.

The goals of the forum are three-fold:

1. The town can inform residents of ongoing work and projects that relate to bike/ped infrastructure.

2. Local volunteer groups can inform residents of their work on projects that relate to bike/ped safety.

3. Town residents have a chance to bring their concerns directly to the various groups who work on bike/ped issues.

Sanders Announces $5.5 million in Health Center Funds for Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt., May 4 – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders today announced the Department of Health and Human Services awarded $5.5 million to six community health centers in Vermont. The health centers will use this new federal funding to renovate facilities, increase patient capacity and expand primary care services.

The Vermont awards are part of $260 million in health infrastructure funding announced today for 290 community health centers in 45 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The funding comes from the Health Center Trust Fund, which was created by a Sanders provision in the Affordable Care Act that provides $11 billion for community health centers across the United States. Congress extended the Sanders provision last year with bipartisan support.

Tribute to Joseph Cordero

We relish the early signs of Spring in this area, robins, crocuses to name a few. One indicator for myself, and a number of others was Jose’ Cordero in his motored cart, sitting in front of the Samuel Elliott Apartments in downtown Brattleboro. He would greet you with a smile, and depending on the day would engage you in sunny conversation, or take an opportunity to just get things off his chest, and either way always entertaining.

In the late seventies and early eighties you could view Jose’ leaning out of his apartment window observing the pulse of Main street. He also worked at Walkers Resturant and during his break you could find him out front leaning against the building taking in the moment, always in his starched white apron. He eventually moved into the S.E. Apartments and again he was often in view on his upper floor balcony enjoying the view.

Selectboard Meeting Notes – Permits and Plans

New fees for special event permits were almost adopted, but put off until the next meeting of the Brattleboro Selectboard to allow for more public input.

The West Brattleboro Association won themselves a small amount of time to come up with brilliant plans for renovating and re-using the current fire station in West Brattleboro. The clock is ticking, as the Selectboard approved of continuing with plans for its demolition.

Energy audits for municipal buildings have been completed, a new traffic safety plan has been adopted, committees have received new appointments, and the Reformer will remain the newspaper of record for the next year.

Mother’s Day Brunch Sunday in Guilford

Broad Brook Grange will present its 20th annual Mother’s Day Brunch on Sunday, May 8, from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Grange hall in Guilford Center.  The proceeds from the event support maintenance of the historic building.

The all-you-can-eat brunch features eggs and omelettes, any style, made to order.  Also on the menu are  pancakes, French toast, sausage, bacon and home fries, with Guilford maple syrup.  Other treats include home-baked coffee cakes and other baked goods, fresh fruit salad, and bread for toasting.  A selection of juices  will be available, along with coffee, teas and milk.

A Playground for Empire: Historical Perspectives on Cuba and the USA

The Friends of Brooks Memorial Library invite the public to attend a free presentation by Tim Weed on Sunday, May 8 at 3:30 in the Library. The presentation is titled, “A Playground for Empire: Historical Perspectives on Cuba and the USA. Tim Weed has made many trips to Cuba, and will discuss past and current changes in Cuba and US relations.  

Weed is an award-winning author, outdoorsman, independent explorer and a founding director of the National Geographic Student Expeditions. This program is made possible through the Vermont Humanities Speakers Bureau.

Fireworks Benefit for WVEW, Brattleboro Community Radio

Susan Brearey’s Elemental Images Closing Reception, Film, Music, Forum

Sunday evening, May 1st, 7pm at , the closing reception for exhibition featuring the works of Brearey from the past 20 years including many never before exhibited and several done in the past year and a . This event, open to all, also features a short film, music of , and a forum/conversation. 

Brearey is featured in the film showing, entitled “The Magic Lantern Along the Pennine Way” (17 minutes). “This was my summer collaboration with artist, Dylan Stone, and American musician, Tim Eriksen in England,” says Sue. “We spent 12 days working in the northern Peak’s District of England along the scenic national trail called the Pennine Way, which stretches across 286 miles of mountain tops and crosses Hadrian’s Wall.

‘Ways to Strength and Beauty’ New Multi-Media Installation at Brooks House Atrium ‘Closet’

Local Artist Mounts Multi-Media Installation in ‘The Closet’, a new art space at Brooks House Atrium

Norton Garber’s “Ways to Strength and Beauty” (Wege zu Kraft und Schönheit) a multi media, site specific installation, will open for three weeks from May 6 through May 22, 2016 in The Closet @ Brooks House Atrium, a new and unique art spot in the heart of Downtown Brattleboro.

Garber chose this modest and intimate space for the challenge of transforming it with a complex web of moving sound and light images. Major elements include: a kinetic sound sculpture, a 1925 German silent film, toy soldiers, video game sounds and shadows which surround the viewer. Six discrete sound/light pieces, both spontaneous and composed, subtly and continunuously change to create a new, fertile environment which transcends any individual element. Images evoke historical and contemporary issues.
