The Stump Streets

Forest Square, also known as the Tree Streets, in Brattleboro was once a very desirable part of town to live. The area was given its name due to the ample number of trees, the streets are named after trees, and the streets were planted with large shade trees lining the sidewalks and roads.

The very largest trees in the neighborhood today were likely planted in the 1860s by Brattleboro’s Share Tree Association. There was a concerted effort to plant new trees to provide shade for future residents, since much of the town was being cleared of trees as people cut them for wood.

The shade trees grew up together and became quite large and doing all the things trees do – provide shade, homes for birds, food for squirrels, places to play and climb for children.

Should Vermont Speaker of the House, Shap Smith, be charged with conspiracy with Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin for creating a new form of racial profiling of people charged with a criminal misdemeanor by forcing them to submit to a DNA test because that is just a new form of being Hitler because DNA testing shows whether you are “Cohanim Jewish” J1 haplogroup Y chromosome or Black or Native American Indian, etc.?

Military Expert to Speak on American Engagement with Niger

On Friday, May 13, at 7:30 p.m., at the The School for International Training, Room IC‐101, International Center, 1 Kipling Road, Brattleboro, The Windham World Affairs Council is presenting Dr. John Hagen, an Air Force lieutenant colonel, who will speak on “American Engagement with Niger: A Case Study on Confronting Violent Extremism in Africa.” As the academic lead for a U.S. State Department initiative that is helping to develop professional military education for the army of Niger, John Hagen is in a good position to analyze the situation in that country and discuss U.S. involvement there. Bonus Weekend Concert Series – Prince and the Revolution at First Avenue, August 3, 1983

Perhaps the only upside to Prince passing on is that YouTube has exploded with Prince videos. At least for the moment. Let’s enjoy one.

Tonight we will travel back in time, prior to Purple Rain. At this First Avenue show in the summer of 1983, Wendy makes her debut with the band and a series of new songs are debuted. I Would Die For U, Computer Blue, Purple Rain, Let’s Go Crazy, and Baby I’m a Star are played for the first time live.

Prince fans will enjoy hearing that these new songs aren’t completely finalized.

Weekend Creativity Series – Make a Flip Book

My creativity is definitely biased toward drawing and animation. This week I’d like to share a video about doing a very simple and rewarding animation project – making a flip book.

There are lots of ways to do this, and there are many different types of flip books you might want to try. You can use post-it notes, small drawing pads, pieces of paper cut and stapled together, or the edges of your math book. (Of course, you shouldn’t write in your math book.)

Medicare Boot Camp in Townshend & Brattleboro

Senior Solutions staff provides unbiased information about the Medicare system at Medicare Boot Camp. In May this free class will be held in two Windham County locations: in Townshend on Thursday May 19, 1-3 P.M. and in Brattleboro on Thursday May 26, 1-3 P.M.

The class is for Vermonters who are new to Medicare. Family members who help these beneficiaries may also find it useful. Medicare has strict enrollment periods, and Medicare Boot Camp prepares participants make timely decisions about drug plans and supplemental plans as well as many other issues.

Vermont Jazz Center Presents: Ben Williams and Sound Effect

The Vermont Jazz Center will welcome bassist Ben Williams and his group Sound Effect to the stage on Saturday, May 14th at 8:00 PM. Sound Effect is Ben Williams, bass; Marcus Strickland, saxophones; Alex Wintz, guitar; Willerm Delisfort on piano and Rhodes; John Davis on drums.

Ben Williams is the winner of the 2009 Thelonious Monk Competition on bass. He is also the recipient of a Grammy Award for his work with Pat Metheny’s Unity Band and was voted as top overall rising star in Downbeat’s 2015 Critic’s Poll. Most recently, Williams was chosen as bassist for the White House’s celebration of International Jazz Day. After introductions by President Obama, Irina Bokova (Director General of UNESCO), and Herbie Hancock, Williams accompanied Chucho Valdéz, Paquito D’Rivera, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kurt Elling, Trombone Shorty, Lionel Loueke, Robert Glasper, and Herbie Hancock in a moving example of how music unites the entire world. Williams’s consumate ability to support a wide range of styles is reflected in the numerous recordings he has appeared on with Pat Metheny, Jacky Terrasson, George Benson, The NEXT Collective, Eric Reed, and many more. He is an in-demand sideman and has performed with Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, Mulgrew Miller, Chaka Khan, Terrence Blanchard, Stefon Harris, Pharrell Williams, and Herbie Hancock; he appears with Don Cheadle in the new tribute to Miles Davis – “Miles Ahead.”

Brattleboro Selectboard Special Meeting Warning – Executive Session and Budgets

The Brattleboro Selectboard will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 in the Selectboard meeting room at the Municipal Center. It is anticipated that the Board will enter into executive session at 5:30pm to discuss labor relations agreements with employees and pending or probable civil litigation, and will reconvene the business meeting at 6:15pm.

Next WBA Meeting on May 12th to Discuss Potential Re-use of Current West B Fire Station

The regular monthly meeting of the West Brattleboro Association (WBA) will be held on Thursday, May 12th at 6:00 PM at the New England House, 254 Marlboro Road. After a review of the treasury report, spring plantings, the last BizUp meeting and other issues, the WBA will discuss details of the Chicken BBQ coming up on Saturday, May 28th.

A feature every year of the group, the popular Chicken BBQ will once again happen in front of the First Congregational Church on Western Avenue in West Brattleboro. The menu will feature half chickens, baked beans, and coleslaw or salad, available from 11:00 a.m. until sold out.  More information on the event will be forthcoming.

Strolling of the Heifers Seeks Volunteers, Vendors

Strolling of the Heifers is seeking volunteers to help make Stroll Weekend a success, and still has room for a few more vendors at its Expo. 

Strolling of Heifers Weekend takes place June 3-5, with the agriculturally-themed parade scheduled for Sat., June 4 at 10 a.m. in downtown Brattleboro. 

The Stroll is always looking for volunteers to help out in a multitude of ways at all events, including the Friday evening Street Festival (June 3), the Parade and Expo (June 4) and the Tour de Heifer (June 85), as well as at other events year-round.
