David Schoales – iBrattleboro 2013 Selectboard Candidate Interview

Mr. Schoales is running for a 1 year seat on the Brattleboro Selectboard.

Why do you want to be on the Selectboard this year?

I am concerned about the future and whether we will have a strong enough community and local economy to weather the challenges ahead.  When I saw that Dick and Dora were leaving it seemed like it might be an opportunity to be part of a more collaborative board that could work well together toward strengthening our community and economy.

Why run for the 1 year seat?

I prefer to come back to the community for signatures every year rather than risk feeling entitled to the position. That’s why I have always taken one-year petitions for the town school board seat.

Automatic License Plate Reader

“10-86 this is Dispatch. Where are you?”

“We are working the once per year Code 18 in West Brattleboro across from Gilles Seafood Restaurant. We have two unmarked vehicles parked nose to nose in the center lane with a police cruiser behind each vehicle with lights flashing. When passing traffic slows down to rubber neck at the phony accident scene we look at their inspection sticker, license plate registration sticker, and seat belts. If we see an infraction we ticket them. We are also testing our new ALPR toys compliments of Homeland Security.”

“How is the automatic license plate reader working?”

Guilford Pre-Town Meeting

It’s in the Calemdar already, but I got the feeling iBrattleboro wants Guilford news & this seems to be it for this week. (I do see your note in the guidelines saying events should go in the Calendar, maybe not here, so am not sure you want this here, but anyway!!!)

This Thursday at Broad Brook Grange at 7 pm is the annual pre-town meeting.  First the Selectboard, then School board, will outline the items they’re going to be bringing to the voters on Mar 5.  This is good venue to ask questions in an informal setting.  Candidates for Town & School Board offices are also asked to attend to introduce themselves. Guilford doesn’t get as fancy as having a candidates’ forum, so this is it.

Small Business Slump Continues

In case you were wondering, the economy really did slow down again last summer.  A spike of business failures in July led to a cooling trend in August, and by September there was a discernible chill in the air.  Nowhere was this so keenly felt as in small business.

Dun & Bradstreet’s Small Business Health Index Report documents this new wave of recession in typically bland terms, but the numbers say what thousands of small business owners cannot — the second half of 2012 (and continuing into the current quarter of 2013) stunk for small business.

iBrattleboro Weekend Concert Series: Modest Mouse

To make up for last week, and only a day late at that, I opted for a more straight-ahead rock show from now veteran Modest Mouse, performed in 2010.  YouTube commenters seem to have decided that the venue was in Sioux Falls, SD.  I’ve been a fan of Modest Mouse for most of the last decade, having originally fallen for Moon Over Antarctica.  One of the best songs on that record, Third Planet, is included on the playlist along with a host of other tunes from throughout their career.

Warning: There are a few swears.

Skatepark Design on Selectboard Agenda This Tuesday

Dear Friends, Neighbors, and Readers of iBrattleboro.com:

You will recall that the Selectboard acted a handful of months ago to commit to a contract with a design firm, which has since been working on the design for the skating facilities at Crowell Park.

Senators Challenge Postal Plan to End Saturday Delivery

Unauthorized proposal would hurt rural communities, cost jobs

WASHINGTON – Twenty-four senators, led by Tom Udall of New Mexico, are challenging the postmaster general’s authority to discontinue Saturday mail delivery later this year without congressional approval.

In a letter to Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe, the senators acknowledge the financial challenges the Postal Service is facing and urge him to work with Congress to address these problems through bipartisan reform, such as the Senate legislation passed last year.

They also point out that a shift to five-day service could lead to further declines in mail volume and revenues, worsening the U.S. Postal Service’s overall condition.

River Garden Finances

Does anyone have a comprehensive file on how much public monies were invested in the Robert Gibson River Garden?  At a recent Selectboard meeting, a member of the Town Finance Committee asked the question. After some thought, the Town Manager said the Town probably could not answer that specific question. It could only account for Town funds that went into the property, not all public funds.

Brains Matter – Understanding the Developing Adolescent Brain

At BAPC, we’re often asked by parents, caregivers and educators, in our community, to share tips and strateges for preventing youth from experimenting with drugs, alcohol and other substances. Many parents are aware that teens often have a prevelant misconception about the safety of experimenting with substances including marijuana and prescription drugs.

Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes – February 19, 2013

Barring unforeseen circumstances, Brattleboro’s new Town Plan will be approved by the Selectboard at their next regular Tuesday night meeting at the Municipal Center.

If you attend in person or watch on TV, you will also hear discussions of a new gravity fed sewer line for Black Mountain, an update on progress with Brattleboro’s new skatepark design, talk of taxing your gasoline, thoughts on changing the boundaries for the Downtown Improvement District, and the parking garage committee will be dissolved.

All this and more on Tuesday night, and you can read about it in detail here the morning after.
