The Reluctant Republic and the Breakdown of Secession

The founding of a nation-state must decide where its powers belong. In a nation where the dichotomy of centralization and decentralization proponents exists it is confronted with black or white propositions that actually create shades of gray tugging on both trends.

The United States Constitution was written to be a strongly centralist document with a smattering of decentralist characteristics. Some of the founding members thought that it lacked balance until the Bill of Rights satisfied their arguments against ratification.

C 10 Over Brattleboro Today?

While at the Brattleboro Literary Festival I head a loud plane, sounded like it was going down Main St. Then a little while later there was another plane that was low flying over the River.  Chris Nutting captured this image of the plane over Putney Road.

Phone Scam?

If you receive a text message from “Brattleboro Savings and Loan Association” saying “Alert for (your phone number). Call 347-218-4082.” YOU PROBABLY SHOULD NOT CALL BACK. I think it’s a scam. The phone # is listed as an NYC number, and the recording told me that my ATM card is frozen. I do not have an ATM card with BSnL. It asked me to type in my account number.

If you need to contact BSnL, it’s probably best to call the number they list in the phone book or online, not the number in this text.

The New King of Thailand

Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn has become the new King of Thailand, succeeding the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s I was working at Capital Children’s Museum in DC and one of the exhibits we built was in conjunction with the government of Thailand. We filled a room the size of about three or four classrooms with examples of Thai art, architecture, food, music, language, costume, etc. and the Thai government helped out with money, artifacts and crafts, and even helped construct small buildings.

Sufferage(sic)

Fittingly enough, it was during this election cycle my mother received her dementia diagnosis. Thanks to her stroke, she’s moved fairly quickly through the levels, like a pro-gamer unlocking ever more complex realms of challenge. When she was unable to feed herself or attend to hygiene, memory care became inevitable. My periodic visits have become studies in both specific and general cognitive atrophe, in addition to whatever else it is when a son becomes the elder to his parent.

As a way of holding on to the rail when the seas get rough, I have begun to look at the memory care facility, and mental disability, in an anthropological light. I’m always on the look out, in my mother’s case, to see what parts of personality persist, and which patterns remain as a kind of behavioral bedrock. Observing which of her symptomatic responses were there all along in nascent form. Seeing her surrounded by her ‘peers’, each with their own expeditions underway, it forces me to wonder about the so-called sanity of us all.

Education or Politics?

I noticed in the Commons. He makes interesting points about a town appointment that may not be very transparent, which of course raises questions.
