Republican gubernatorial candidate Scott Milne who, for all intents and purposes, lost in his campaign against Peter Shumlin is asking the state legislature to vote for him. Not because he won the election, which he clearly did not, but because the Vermont Constitution sets aside any popular win under 50% and turns the decision over to the legislature.
Without going into precedents where losing candidates concede, this candidate will not lick his wounds graciously.While perhaps, as Milne is reported as saying that “Vermonters are fed up with the governorship of Democratic Gov. Peter Shumlin” might be true, not enough of them voted to give Milne the governorship.
According to this article, linked below, a relatively simple engineering advance has boosted solar cell efficiency up to about 40%. If true, this really would make a big difference in the cost of solar. A BIG difference. Cross your fingers.

Based on weather forecasts, the closure of I-91 Northbound between exits 2 and 3to complete pothole repair that was tentatively schedule for this week has been postponed. We hope to complete the repair the night of Monday December 15. This work is weather dependent. We will alert stakeholders 48 hours prior to the closure date, once it is set for certain.

What few of us consider is that the holiday season is a time when there is an increased risk of home fires. Many households engage in holiday activities that serve as some of the leading causes of home fires, including cooking. Christmas trees, candle usage and holiday decorations also significantly contribute to the seasonal causes of home fires. Add to that the hectic nature of the holidays, when people are trying to accomplish multiple tasks and the chance for home fires grows even more.

It’s time to put air in my tires. Since it is impractical to try them all, I thought I’d ask you for your opinions on local area air pumps.
Has any service station out there installed any new, innovative air pump machines? Have there been any technologiocal advancements in recent years? Where is the best place to fill tires? Any good deals?
Up until now I often stop in at one of the stations near Exit 3, but I don’t have to go there if there is a better option.
Does anyone have experience using a phone from Net 10?
If so, can you rate the reception and coverage around town?

The BAJC “pop-up” gift shop will be open for several days this week and next. Chanukah candles are available, along with menorahs, dreidels, chocolate “gelt” and other Judaica and gift items. Although you can’t purchase anything on Shabbat, you can select your candles and gifts next Saturday morning (12/13), and pay another day, when it’s not Shabbat. (You can send a check to BAJC.)
The gift shop (in the BAJC office–the cottage behind the shul) will also be open on Monday 12/8 from 3:00 to 6:00, on Wednesday the 10th from 1:30 to 5:30, on Thursday the 11th from 3:00 to 8:30, and on Friday the 19th from 4:00 on.
On Thursday, December 11, at 6:00 pm, the West Brattleboro Association (WBA) will host its annual Holiday Party at The New England House, 254 Marlboro Road. This is a time for people and businesses in West Brattleboro to get together socially and to celebrate the Association’s numerous accomplishments in this past year. The evening will feature a cash bar with hors d’oeuvres prepared by the restaurant. The WBA suggests a voluntary donation of $5 toward the food, although no one will be turned away.
In addition to this being a time to enjoy each other at this festive season, there will be a couple of short presentations. The Association’s board president Michael Bosworth will give a brief “state of the Association” report after which the group will present the West Brattleboro Community Leader of the Year to a deserving person or entity. Come to our party to help us celebrate this worthy recipient! Previous winners have been Ahmad and Kat Rashed of Rashed’s Garden Center, the staff and board of the Brattleboro Housing Authority, and Todd Darrah of the Chelsea Royal Diner, each for their many contributions to our community.

BURLINGTON, Vt., Dec. 5 – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and the University of Vermont held a Youth Climate Summit today.
More than 150 Vermont high school students and dozens of teachers from 26 high schools throughout the state worked in small teams to create climate action plans for their high schools.
“Global warming is the planetary crisis of our time,” Sanders told the students. “The scientific community is telling us that we have a narrow window of opportunity to address the crisis of climate change and to transform our energy system away from fossil fuels and toward sustainable energy,” added the senator, a member of both the Senate energy and environment committees.
The Brattleboro Selectboard will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at 5:15pm in the Selectboard meeting room at the Municipal Center. It is anticipated that the Board will enter into executive session at 5:15pm to discuss the appointment or employment or evaluation of a public officer or employee.

The 9th Annual Friends of Brooks Memorial Library Holiday Book Sale will be held in the Library on Friday, December 5 from 10 AM to 6 PM and Saturday, December 6 from 10 AM to 2 PM.
Gift quality books and gently used fiction, non-fiction, children’s books and CDs will be on sale. Non-fiction titles include art, cooking and gardening, history, music and more subjects.
Book sale discount coupons are now available from the Front Desk of the Library. In addition to the wide range of books and CDs for sale, the Friends will provide free gift-wrapping of purchased items on Saturday from 11 AM to l PM.
Holiday shopping brings an extended market day starting this Saturday at the Brattleboro Winter Farmer’s Market.
As usual the market will open at 10 am and stay open until 3 pm for an extra hour of holiday shopping.

The actual closure date will be communicated to stakeholders at least 48 hours in advance, after the team is able to confirm forecasted weather conditions are acceptable for work to proceed.
I-91
Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge. The new bridge will be 104’ wide and is designed to carry all four lanes of traffic –two northbound and two southbound.
