Washington, June 15, 1864.

Dear wife,

Well, I am through the mill, and came out for a first Lieutenant. Now for the front. I have been up and seen Jacob and Dr. Bowker, etc. Heard from Zopher. Up to the 10th he is well. He is a Sergeant. I have spent the whole day at Carver and Columbia and in laying in a little paper and tobacco, had the luck to find a friend that let me have a little money. I am well, first rate. If I could only get that strap on my shoulders. You know that I should not care, if there was not such a scarcity of pennies in my pocket. I cannot describe my feelings when I heard that mother was dangerously sick. How glad I am that I had written to her. I was intending to write again as soon as I had got through my examination here, but alas, she can write no more. How sad father
must feel.

Twilight On The Tavern Lawn Presents Kat Wright and Brett Hughes June 15

Twilight Music continues its 12th annual Twilight On The Tavern Lawn series of folk, world beat, rock, jazz, zydeco, Celtic, swing, blues and bluegrass summer concerts on Sunday, June 15 with Kat Wright and Brett Hughes’ Americana music quartet. The seven concert series continues every other Sunday through August 24. All concerts begin at 6:00 pm in downtown Putney on the Putney Tavern lawn (bring a lawn chair or blanket) or at Next Stage at 15 Kimball Hill in case of rain. The series is sponsored by the Town of Putney, Soundview Paper Company, Next Stage Arts Project, The Stockwell Brothers and many other Putney businesses and organizations. The concerts are free to the public (donations are accepted) and food will be available.

Weekend Concert Series: Bill Laswell – Axiom Sound System

Bill Laswell performing under his incarnation as Axiom Sound System, live in Chicago, with Material, Praxis, Pharoah Sanders, and Bootsy Collins in 2006.

Laswell was a producer /musician during the dawn of compact discs, and his name guaranteed that whatever was on his new disc would be musically interesting. He frequently threw together combinations of great musicians for specialty projects. Very unique.

Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes – June 17, 2014

Town clerical and administrative employees have decided to unionize, and Brattleboro will be reviewing and potentially accepting a collective bargaining agreement at their next Tuesday evening.

The Brattleboro Selectboard will also start down the path toward hiring a new Chief of Police, will adjust committees and grants, approve a loan for the Brattleboro Area Farmers Market, appoint David Schoales to an action team, and more.

You can attend in person at the Municipal Center on Main Street, and bring up items not otherwise on the agenda during public participation. You ca also watch on BCTV, or follow the coverage here the day after.

Not Another Round On The Budget

According to the Brattleboro Town Clerk’s Office only 71 signatures were submitted by the 5pm deadline yesterday, in the attempt to force a reconsideration of the town’s municipal budget. 418 signatures of registered voted would have been necessary.

Camp Presto – Beginner Instrument & Music for Ages 5-9

 The Brattleboro Music Center’s Camp Presto is the perfect week long adventure for children who are interested in music, but not sure whether to commit to learning an instrument.

While learning the basics of playing the violin, campers will work together to complete a musical story book. Each child will tell a story through a simple violin composition, incorporating the very basics of note reading and rhythm, while simultaneously learning alternatives to musical notation.

Students will learn to perform their musical ideas, culminating in a final class CD that they can take home to share with their family & friends!

I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project Update: Week of June 15

I-91

Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge in the Fall of 2015.

Route 30

The speed limit on Route 30 near the work zone has been reduced to 40 mph. This reduction will remain in effect through the Spring of 2016.

Project-related truck activity on Route 30 will continue. Route 30 will be reduced to a single lane intermittently both day and night, with flaggers regulating traffic within the work zone.

Roger Allbee Announces As Candidate for Vermont State Senate for Windham County

Roger Allbee has announced that he is a candidate for the Vermont State Senate, representing Windham County, as a Democrat. Allbee will contest the Democratic primary on August 26 with incumbent Senator Jeanette White, as well as several other candidates.  He will enjoy the endorsement of Senator Peter Galbraith who has decided to not seek reelection.

Allbee is currently the Chief Executive Officer and Administrator of Grace Cottage Hospital / Carlos G. Otis Health Care Center in Townshend and is the former Secretary of Agriculture, Food and Markets for the State of Vermont. Additionally, he is working on VIEWBOOST, a rural tourism application for mobile devices, which connects tourists to places, events and businesses in real time and is using Vermont as a model.

Senate Passes Sanders-McCain Veterans Bill

WASHINGTON, June 11 – The Senate today voted nearly unanimously for a bill to expand hospitals and clinics run by the Department of Veterans Affairs and to hire more doctors and nurses to provide timely, quality care for veterans.

The bipartisan bill by Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) would let veterans facing long delays for doctor appointments at VA facilities go elsewhere. Their measure also would hold VA officials accountable for trying to conceal patient wait times.

Subscribers Benefit from Substantial Savings on Ambulance Services

BRATTLEBORO, VT—Rescue Inc., is in the midst of its subscription campaign, by which residents may sign up at a flat annual fee to receive substantial savings for the cost of certain ambulance services not covered by insurance.

Drew Hazelton, Chief of Operations, explains that for someone who had three ambulance calls in a year, the total cost could be $1500 or more. “For an uninsured person, our subscription plan could pay the full amount on a qualifying bill,” he said. “For an insured person, their plan may still require a patient co-pay, or the cost of the ambulance service might go toward an insurance deductible — but again, with a subscription they may not have to pay anything, if the call falls under the subscription parameters.”

Putney Triumphant In Battle of CRVBL Undefeateds

WALPOLE, NH – The Putney Fossils continued their winning ways Friday night, June 6 with a 7-2 victory over previously undefeated Walpole Wild Blue at Hubbard Park.

Hard throwing Fossils right-hander Danny Lichtenfeld was masterful on the mound, scattering six hits and three walks over eight innings while fanning six and allowing no earned runs. Bob “Bullet” Englehart pitched a perfect ninth to close out the game.

Time Traveling Through Music – for Ages 7-12

Have you ever wanted to travel back in time?

That’s what we’ll be doing in this week long journey through the course of music history. We will combine music and other artistic expressions to recreate a variety of musical periods starting all the way back in prehistoric times! We’ll make instruments and act like composers. We’ll listen to the differences in styles from one period to the next, and draw pictures of what we hear. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of how music has been shaped over time in a playful and engaging environment. Each child’s creativity will be our time machine, which might even take us into the future!  Tuition $150 / Financial Aid Available.

Washington, June 10, 1864.

Dearest Abiah,

Here yet. Had expected to have been examined today, but shall not probably be before Monday. It may be
put off until a later day. I will let you know Monday night. I have seen Charles Wilder from the 10th Regt. Co. K. He was wounded on Friday last. He says Zopher was then well. This is the last news that Jacob or I have heard. Wilder’s arm is pretty well ploughed up. It struck near the elbow, and went up to the shoulder, but it is a flesh wound. He is going to Philadelphia in the morning, came in yesterday. He is in Columbia, but Jacob would not have seen him if I had not found him. Lucien Piper is killed, so Wilder says. Some of our Brattleboro boys are back here in Hospitals. But one of our old Company B has been killed and one wounded, though they have been fighting all the time. The one wounded was shot through the calf of the leg. The other Company have had several men wounded, but none dangerously.
