The much anticipated Cry You One residency gets rolling this week when Sandglass Theater and Vermont Performance Lab present The Jumbo Gumbo Combo at Next Stage Arts Project in Putney.
The evening begins with a Louisiana gumbo supper, prepared by Sandglass’s Board of Directors, under the tutelage of Scott Ainslie, local blues master and bayou cook! “The recipe is Scott’s own, learned first hand from master gumbo cooks in Louisiana. Scott is taking us step by step through the fixing, right from making the roux. It’s authentic, and made without okra” says Eric Bass, Co-Artistic Director of Sandglass Theater.
SeVWA’s 2014 River Monitoring was Completed on September 10th (Provided by L. Callahan, Sep. 12, 2014)
August 27th was the last full river sampling day of Southeastern Vermont Watershed Alliance’s (SeVWA’s) 2014 river monitoring program, but there was one more monitoring day on Sep. 10th at three sites on the Saxtons River and one on the Williams River.
SeVWA’s 2014 river monitoring season – from mid-June through this week – included 26 stream sites where water quality samples were collected by volunteers. The sampling was scheduled for evry 2 weeks. Those 26 sites were along the West River, North Branch Brook, Rock River, Williams River, Middle Branch Williams River, Saxtons River and Whetstone Brook. The parameters tested were Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria, air & water temperature, three nutrient parameters, turbidity and conductivity.
The Brattleboro Selectboard will hear a preliminary report from the Pay As You Throw working group at their next regular Tuesday meeting. The police and fire departments will receive grants and a number of people will be appointed as delegates and committee members.

I-91
Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge. The new bridge will be 104’ wide and is designed to carry all four lanes of traffic –two northbound and two southbound.
Route 30
The speed limit on Route 30 near the work zone has been reduced to 40 mph. This reduction will remain in effect through the Spring of 2016.
Project-related truck activity on Route 30 will continue. Route 30 will be reduced to a single lane intermittently both day and night, with flaggers regulating traffic within the work zone.

What is really behind the battlelines over this park? Is any decision a good decision? Over time the amount of skatepark comments on iBrattleboro really overwhelmed its readership; it also exposed one of the deepest rifts seen in this microcosm of our community.
How could such a small community be so glaringly and bitterly divided for so long over what should have been a relatively simple matter?Two recent columns in the Reformer make the case for Elm Street as well as I’ve read anywhere on this topic of a skatepark site. Is it too late, or will we really putting this park out at Living Memorial?
Co-working Space – Should we have one?
When we two Vermonters walked into a co-working space in San Fransisco, we gasped. In front of us was a large room with long tables at which people were sitting laptops plugged into outlets in the middle of the tables.
It was quiet. Some people were walking around. A tour showed us the phone booths, a conference room, the coffee gallery (of course, it was San Fransisco) and and upstairs space where companies were renting larger offices. The space was specifically for “social entrepreneurs.” For us two, who at the time regularly camped out at the Blue Moose, it was a vision of what we lack here.
WASHINGTON, Sept. 10 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) issued the following statement tonight after President Barack Obama delivered a nationally televised address on the Islamic State terrorist group:
“ISIS is a brutal and dangerous organization that must be defeated. I agree with the president that ISIS is a threat to the international community and must be combatted by the international community, not just the United States. Most importantly, this struggle will not be won without the active participation of the people of Iraq and Syria. This cannot be a unilateral American action. As we develop a long-term strategy, we must not forget the painful lessons learned by the Bush-Cheney wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. U.S. ground troops should not be sent back into combat. I support the president’s airstrike campaign and help for the Syrian opposition.”
Washington, DC – Representative Peter Welch gave the following statement after the President addressed the nation tonight:
“I have appreciated the President’s clear-eyed restraint to date in responding to multiple, serious threats in this region. I have supported his use of military force to protect American personnel still in Iraq and to provide humanitarian assistance to refugees in cooperation with the competent Kurdish military in northern Iraq. I fully agree with him that American combat troops should not be deployed in the region. And I applaud his leadership in forcing Iraqi leaders to form a coalition government to respond to the threat posed by ISIS.

Alzheimer’s educator and author Patti Kerr will speak at the Brooks Memorial Library on Wednesday, September 10th at 2 PM in the Library’s Meeting Room on the 2nd Floor. She will also repeat her talk at 7 PM. Kerr, a Certified Alzheimer’s Educator, is also author of “I Love You…Who Are You?”, Loving and Caring for a Parent with Alzheimer’s”.
She will discuss Alzheimer’s, her family’s journey with the disease, and how to care for a loved one with Alzheimer’s. She will also provide information and hands-on tips for everyone regarding the disease.
Washington, DC – Tuesday evening, the House of Representatives approved by a voice vote legislation authored by Rep. Chris Gibson (R-NY) and Rep. Peter Welch to address the growing problem of Lyme disease. The incidence of this debilitating disease has and across the Northeast region.
On Sunday night, the Brattleboro area lost a contributor to the community.
I first met Alan Dann through the Estey Organ Museum where we served together on the board. In this capacity, I learned of his musical abilities. Alan played organ, but also loved to sing. He would frequently be telling me of impending trips to foreign lands to sing with his college alumni choir.
The Department of Public Works has closed Lower Green Street from Retting Place to High Street until further notice. An exception of the Lower Green Street entrance from High Street will temporarily be two way traffic only to allow entrance to the side of the building located at 22 – 26 High Street. There will be no through traffic allowed.
A stone retaining wall below lower Green Street is failing and the roadway is being closed for public safety.
Today (Monday) a section of Harmony Parking Lot will be closed so D&E Tree can remove trees on the bank between the Harmony Lot and Green Street. The parking lot is expected to be fully opened by noontime today.
The Green Street road closing and tree removal are all part of an immediate public safety plan.
