I had seen a 10 minute play which starts with a character complaining that when he tried to purchase a bottle of aspirin at a drug store, the clerk told him: “We don’t have that.”
It reminded me of a strange experience I had on Staten Island more than 30 years ago.
On June 24, weather permitting, Cotton Mill Hill will be closed from Route 142/Vernon ST to the south end of the parking lot at the Cotton Mill Hill Complex. The road will be closed to allow the Highway Department access to replace failing drainage in the roadway. All access to the Cotton Mill Hill Complex will be from South Main ST.
The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) will be repaving the Guilford Welcome Center parking lot, including entrance and exit ramps. The center is located on I-91 Northbound.
Repaving will take place July 9 – August 23, 2019. When the car parking area is paved, visitors will use the truck/bus parking area. During construction, the Welcome Center will not be accessible to any truck, bus, or RV traffic.

The Brattleboro Selectboard took up a full agenda, though with only three members present, they themselves were not quite full.
The big discussion of the evening centered on landlords and a new rental housing inspection system soon to take effect, but the exciting news came during public participation when it was announced that a day work program, legal and with dignity, will soon be getting started.
Had it ever been suggested that the Strolling Fair would improve if it was squeezed onto the Common such a notion would have been summarily dismissed with a great guffaw. Not worth the effort even thinking about. Then the Retreat decided that it could no longer tolerate an entire day of tumult on its front lawn. Its residential denizens became too frazzled and distraught staring out between the iron bars at the frolicking crowd eating ice cream and dripping sausage, oblivious to the fate of those inside. The Strolling was booted. Like it or not it was going to be packed onto the Common. This produced one of the best Fairs ever!

Brattleboro, June 2,019 – Scott Sparks, from Vermont Hempicurean, Brattleboro, will be providing an introduction to CBD oils derived from hemp on Friday, June 21, at 11:00 a.m. at Inclusion Center.
The discussion will include a brief history of hemp. Participants will learn how CBD from Vermont farms can provide potential relief from pain, anxiety and sleep disorders. Paving and pickups are a focus at the next regular meeting of the Brattleboro Selectboard.
The board will also begin the start-up of rental housing registrations and inspections, Groundworks will see an increase in Town funds for a housing project, the Brooks House will get a modification of their tax stabilization agreement, a Charter Review process may start up soon, and more. You can, as always, bring up other items not on the agenda during public participation near the start of the meeting.

The Brattleboro Traffic Safety Committee will meet on Thursday, June 20, 2019, at 8:00am in the Selectboard Meeting Room at the Municipal Center.
The speed limit leaving Brattleboro on Route 30 is wrong.
Currently, the posted limit is 40 mph until after the distillery. The road, though, was engineered for a faster speed. Driving 40 mph now feels very slow.
Driving 40 mph along this stretch seems slow for many reasons. The road is wide as it is. The shoulders are wide enough for extra lanes. The curves of the road are wide and gentle.
Broad Brook Grange will present its 22nd annual Father’s Day Brunch on Sunday, June 16, from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Broad Brook Community Center in Guilford.
The all-you-can-eat brunch features eggs and omelettes, many of the eggs from Guilford, any style, made to order. n(Local Duck eggs are also available!) Twilight Music continues its 17th annual Twilight On The Tavern Lawn series of folk, world beat, zydeco, Celtic, jazz, blues and bluegrass summer concerts on Sunday, June 16 with contemporary folk and bluegrass quartet The Stockwell Brothers. The seven concert series continues every other Sunday through August 25. All concerts begin at 6:00 pm in downtown Putney on the Putney Tavern lawn (bring a lawn chair or blanket) or at Next Stage at 15 Kimball Hill or the Putney Community Center at 10 Christian Square in case of rain.
The Brattleboro Rotary Club Gateway Foundation is hosting its “Dining for a Cause” fundraiser at the 99 Restaurant on Putney Road in Brattleboro.
The Brattleboro Rotary Club is an active community service club of about 70 members. Its members engage in community and human service projects locally and internationally. Since 1985, Gateway Foundation has awarded close to $500,000 in scholarships.

Amy’s has always offered at least one coffee selection which was organic and fair trade…until recently. Am I the only one annoyed at the change?
The other day I bought a large coffee and one of those personal-size pies at a cost of seven dollars and change. After putting my change into the tip jar I could not help thinking: “Wow, for the same $8 (well, maybe 9) I could have had lunch at the Panda with soup, brown rice, and a nice entrée.
