Brattleboro Selectboard Meeting Agenda & Notes – June 18, 2019

Paving and pickups are a focus at the next regular meeting of the Brattleboro Selectboard.

The board will also begin the start-up of rental housing registrations and inspections, Groundworks will see an increase in Town funds for a housing project, the Brooks House will get a modification of their tax stabilization agreement, a Charter Review process may start up soon, and more. You can, as always, bring up other items not on the agenda during public participation near the start of the meeting.

The speed limit leaving Brattleboro on Route 30 is wrong.

Currently, the posted limit is 40 mph until after the distillery. The road, though, was engineered for a faster speed. Driving 40 mph now feels very slow.

Driving 40 mph along this stretch seems slow for many reasons. The road is wide as it is. The shoulders are wide enough for extra lanes. The curves of the road are wide and gentle. 

Brunch in Guilford for Father’s Day — This Sunday

Broad Brook Grange will present its 22nd annual Father’s Day Brunch on Sunday, June 16, from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Broad Brook Community Center in Guilford.
The all-you-can-eat brunch features eggs and omelettes, many of the eggs from Guilford, any style, made to order. n(Local Duck eggs are also available!) Also on the menu are pancakes, French toast, sausage, bacon and home fries, with Guilford maple syrup. Other treats include home-baked coffee cakes and other baked goods, fresh fruit salad, and bread for toasting. A selection of juices will be available, along with coffee, teas and milk.

Twilight on the Tavern Lawn presents The Stockwell Brothers on Sunday, June 16

Twilight Music continues its 17th annual Twilight On The Tavern Lawn series of folk, world beat, zydeco, Celtic, jazz, blues and bluegrass summer concerts on Sunday, June 16 with contemporary folk and bluegrass quartet The Stockwell Brothers.  The seven concert series continues every other Sunday through August 25.  All concerts begin at 6:00 pm in downtown Putney on the Putney Tavern lawn (bring a lawn chair or blanket) or at Next Stage at 15 Kimball Hill or the Putney Community Center at 10 Christian Square in case of rain.

The Brattleboro Rotary Club Gateway Foundation is hosting its “Dining for a Cause” fundraiser at the 99 Restaurant on Putney Road in Brattleboro.

The Brattleboro Rotary Club is an active community service club of about 70 members. Its members engage in community and human service projects locally and internationally. Since 1985, Gateway Foundation has awarded close to $500,000 in scholarships.

Amy’s has always offered at least one coffee selection which was organic and fair trade…until recently. Am I the only one annoyed at the change?

The other day I bought a large coffee and one of those personal-size pies at a cost of seven dollars and change. After putting my change into the tip jar I could not help thinking: “Wow, for the same $8 (well, maybe 9) I could have had lunch at the Panda with soup, brown rice, and a nice entrée.

State Architectural Historian To Visit Brattleboro: Historic district walk and Certified Local Government presentation

On Wednesday, June 19, 2019 the public is invited to explore historic preservation with the Brattleboro Planning Services Department and members of local boards and commissions. Devin Colman, State Architectural Historian, will make a presentation about Vermont’s Certified Local Government program. Then he will lead a walking tour of two neighborhoods listed as historic districts on the National Register of Historic Places. Come for either or both parts of the evening!

Living Memorial Park Pool Opens June 22

The Brattleboro Recreation and Parks Department is pleased to announce that the Living Memorial Park Pool will be opening for the season on Saturday, June 22nd, 2019 at 1:00 p.m.

In addition to the daily pool fee, there will also be season pool passes available for purchase. Swim Lessons will be Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-Noon, General Swim will be Sunday-Saturday 1:00 p.m.- 4 p.m.,

WSESD New Merged School District Warns $50,000,000 Combined Budget for Guilford, Brattleboro, Dummerston and Putney Schools

Residents of Putney, Brattleboro, Dummerston and Guilford are invited to join the new merged school board, Windham Southeast School District Board, for our 2019-2020 Budget Process.

The first annual meeting of the new merged board will be held on Tuesday, June 25th. Voters present at the WSESD annual meeting will vote on the new merged budget. This budget is a compilation of the five independent district budgets developed by the Guilford, Dummerston, Putney and Brattleboro Town School Boards and the BUHS District #6 School Board (Brattleboro Union High School, Brattleboro Area Middle School, Windham Regional Career Center).
