Dummerston Community Center’s Annual Pampered Chef event will be held Saturday, March2, from 12:55 to 2:55. Kim Martin will host the show with new Spring products, recipes, demonstrations of many cooking needs, also hands-on-cooking and tasting of spices, sauces and rubs. There will be a special drawing at 1:00 p.m. and drawings throughout the show.
In a candidates forum on Monday, February 25th, the candidates for Brattleboro Town School Board were asked how they felt about students being elected to school boards and having an equal vote to theirs. Every one of the five candidates voiced their support for it, and each expressed a different benefit of the change.
The Brattleboro Youth Vote is a town charter amendment that will be voted on as part of the March 5 election ballot. It will give 16 and 17-year old Brattleboro citizens the right to vote on town issues and candidates, be elected and serve on school boards (up to 2 on each), and be elected as a Town Representatives.

Everyday living with a chronic disease, developmental disability or other medical issue presents unique challenges. Support from others can help, there is no need to go it alone. The Inclusion Center, (a nonprofit organization located at lower level, St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 16 Bradley Avenue, Brattleboro, open Mondays from 10:00 Am to 2:00 PM and Fridays from 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM.), is a drop-in center for adults run by and for people with disabilities. Friendship, learning and fun for all abound. Participants come and stay as long or as little as they like, there are no fees. There is no need to qualify for programs such as Medicaid.
The Brattleboro Farmers’ Market is seeking new vendors for its 2019 season. We’re particularly looking for prepared foods (breakfast/lunch) and cheese, but all applications are welcome in the areas of agriculture, prepared/specialty foods, and crafts.
We’re a producers-only market, which means all products must be grown or made by the applicant. Generally, vendors hail from Windham (VT) and Cheshire (NH) counties, but this year we can accept out-of-county prepared food and craft vendors on a one-year basis.
Yesterday I popped in the River Garden to see the Brattleboro exhibit we helped design with BHS, and was met with a surprise. The historical society has been given a treasure trove of old Brattleboro films.
This is a new project for them and they are just getting started. Bill Holiday explained to me that they had been given a big box of family films, and are currently in the process of having them digitized. The goal is to get 4k transfers for high-quality digital use. A few test reels were on display and they were amazing.
Saturday, March 9th at 10 a.m. Winter Tree Walk & Potluck Lunch, sponsored by Windham Regional Woodlands Association.
Bill Guenther, who recently retired as Windham County Forester, will lead a winter tree identification walk in a Halifax woodlot. Bill will show us how to use characteristics such as habitat, growth form, branching pattern, and bark to identify about 20 species of native Vermont trees. This includes a special spot from where we can view four different species of birch tree.

Always the first one of the season in our area, Broad Brook Grange’s annual Sugar on Snow Supper will be held Saturday, March 2, at the Broad Brook Community Center in Guilford. The meal features ham, baked beans, deviled eggs, scalloped potatoes, cole slaw, rolls, homemade donuts, Guilford pickles, and Guilford maple sugar on Guilford snow.
There will be three seatings: at 5:00, 6:00 and 7:00 pm. At each seating, a half-gallon of Guilford maple syrup will be raffled.
On the March 5th Brattleboro town elections ballot, there will be a proposed town charter amendment.
The amendment would lower, to 16, the legal age for
— Voting on town issues and candidates,
— Being elected to and serving on school boards,
— Being elected to and serving in Representative Town Meeting.
After taking my seat on the Brattleboro Town School Board for the first time I took up as an early task the reading of the responsibilities of a school board member. Not surprisingly number one was to see to the education of the children. That suggested that I learn something about education. I remembered my father writing a paper on John Dewey in the 50’s when, after two and a half decades, he had the motivation to finish his Masters in education. So I read a teeny bit about Dewey, and a smattering of Piaget, Montessori, Bruner, Skinner and a few others.
The Brattleboro VFW located at 40 Black Mountain Road is open to the public for lunch. Lunch is served Mon-Fri from 11:30 – 1:30. Specials listed below are only $6 a plate. Across the county, public access television stations – one of the last forms of free, local and accessible media available to Americans – face the threat of being defunded by the end of this year, as the U.S. Federal Communications Commission quickly moves to adopt a rule change that would permanently strip them of funding under pressure from big cable corporations.

Attached is a sample ballot from each of Brattleboro’s three districts. All districts’ ballots are the same except for Town Meeting Members for each district. Absentee ballots are currently available at the Town Clerk’s Office and may be requested until 5:00 pm on Monday, March 4.
