I was really excited to learn that Green Mountain Flour has started delivering bread to the Brattleboro Food Coop. Green Mountain Flour’s flour (is that redundant?) has been available at the coop for a while now, but not their bread.
It will be really nice not to have to go all the way up to Windsor to get great bread made from flour that was grown locally and milled just in time for each bake.

There have been many new users in the last few months, so I thought it might be useful to take a moment to briefly explain iBrattleboro to our relatively new friends. Long-time users of the site are welcome to add additional information in comments.
iBrattleboro was started in February of 2003 as an experiment in do-it-yourself media. It was a reaction to a number of things including big media consolidation, a lack of local reporting, and our personal interest in developing an online community resource.
On November 1st at 8:00 PM, The Vermont Jazz Center will present 3-time Grammy Winner, Jeff Coffin, saxophonist for the Dave Matthews Band and Béla Fleck’s Flecktones. At the VJC, he’ll be performing with the Mu’tet, a group that reflects Coffin’s philosophy that “music must change and mutate in order to evolve.” Their repertoire consists of catchy tunes set over an array of complex feels: deep funk, New Orleans, Latin and swing. Their sound is propelled by rhythms you’ve never heard before and imbued with world music influences. The surprise factor is that the compositions are often in odd meters, delivered over precise, danceable grooves.
WESTMINSTER, VT—Kurn Hattin Homes for Children will hold a public reception to celebrate the unveiling of a new historical exhibit entitled, A Legacy of Caring: Adapting to the Changing Needs of Children and Families. All are welcome to attend Thursday, November 6 from 5:30 – 7:00 PM at the Robert H. Gibson River Garden, 157 Main St. Brattleboro.
This opening reception will be hosted by Kurn Hattin Homes for Children’s Executive Director, Connie Sanderson, and will feature a brief presentation and Q and A session. Refreshments will be provided.
Cars were diverted from route 30 today, due to an accident that occurred close to the construction project near the 91 overpass. My boy and I saw the black cadillac that was severely damaged,on the back of a tow truck. We asked the tow truck driver what happened to the car, and he replied that the car struck the ledge near the bridge. The top of the car was basically shredded and looked like it may have been travelling at a high rate of speed. Of course, a ledge is an unforgiving and immovable object, so maybe high speed was not a factor.
On Saturday, November 1 at Noon, state and local public safety agencies will conduct an audible sounding of the 37 sirens located within the Vermont Yankee ten-mile emergency planning zone. The pole-mounted sirens are located in the Vermont towns of Brattleboro, Dummerston, Guilford and Vernon, and in the New Hampshire towns of Chesterfield, Hinsdale, Richmond, Swanzey and Winchester. In Massachusetts the sirens are located in Gill, Colrain, Leyden, Bernardston and Northfield.
The three-minute siren testing is being conducted by the Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts state public safety agencies in compliance with the regulations of the Federal Emergency Management Agency to ensure the effectiveness of the public notification system.
The Brattleboro Arts Committee will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at 4:00pm in the Selectboard meeting room at the Municipal Center.

Several times a year the Vatican has children release and let fly white doves over the crowds in St. Peter’s Square as signs of peace. During one such release the horrified crowds witnessed a mid-air attack by a hungry crow and seagull when they killed the pope’s blessed doves.
To prevent this brutal contraindication of papal peace, the Swiss Guard acquired a female Harris Hawk with a four-foot wingspan. Like Michael armed with a sword in his hand, the hawkeyed bird of prey perches at the ready to slay these winged dragons who dare to publicly eat the holy symbols of peace.

Boston Gay Men’s Chorus Performs Live at the Latchis -Fundraiser for Brattleboro Retreat’s LGBT Program – Draws Attention to Celebrating Our Differences
BRATTLEBORO, VT—The Brattleboro Retreat presents the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus Live at the Latchis (Brattleboro) on Saturday, November 1 at 7:30 pm. In this first-ever performance in Brattleboro and rare performance in Vermont, the event will raise funds for the Retreat’s program serving Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender (LGBT) individuals.

The majority of the candidates for Representative to Congress are opposed to a natural gas pipeline running underneath Lake Champlain in Vermont. Matthew Andrews, Liberty Union Party candidate, announced good news of an upcoming Protest, and the majority of candidates clapped their hands in applause.
“Pirate Captain Cris Ericson” announced that because the U.S. Supreme Court wrote an Opinion declaring that Corporations are “persons” and because the U.S. Congress did not Impeach them, which the U.S. Congress had the legal right to do, then, that proved the U.S. Congress is in favor of Corporations being “persons” and she – Pirate Captain Cris Ericson, was going to “take back” America away from the control of Corporations and give it back to We, the People. She wore a Pirate hat to emphasize her point.
Time for some magical keyboard playing by master funkateer Bernie Worrell. This show has him playing in Minneapolis with the Bernie Worrell Orchestra, touring after a release of an album of jazz standards.
This show mixes his classics with these new interpretations, and is quite the hour and half of musicianship.
In addition to seeing him with P-Funk many times, I had the pleasure of seeing Bernie play in Boston at the Middle East as a solo artist. It was an embarrassingly small crowd for someone of his musical stature, but he played as if his life depended on it and we were treated to an excellent small show.
On Saturday, November 1, 2014 the VT Yankee Nuclear Power Plant will be conducting the annual test of the warning sirens in all EPZ towns in Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
The sirens will be activated at 12 noon and will sound for a full three (3) minutes.

Twilight Music and Next Stage Arts Project present International Bluegrass Music Association award-winning mandolin prodigy Sierra Hull and her Tennessee-based bluegrass quintet Highway 111 at Next Stage on Sunday, October 26 at 7:30 pm.
Sierra Hull is a leading light in the new generation of bluegrass musicians. Her phenomenal mandolin playing, eloquent vocals and musical maturity well beyond her years have drawn comparisons to Alison Krauss. A seasoned performer, Sierra has appeared on Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion” and the Grand Ole Opry radio and television shows, as well as at numerous music festivals including Merlefest, the Newport Folk Festival, Rockygrass and the Carnegie Hall Family Concert Series. She has shared the stage with the likes of Alison Krauss, Sam Bush, Ricky Skaggs, Bobby McFerrin and Edgar Meyer.
If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. And then try one more time.
Such was the unintentional but rewarding path the Brattleboro Selectboard embarked upon almost 16 months ago in a search for a new Town Manager. Along the way, multiple searches were undertaken as selected candidates declined to take the offered position.
The searching has come to an end with a signed contract between the Town of Brattleboro and Peter Elwell, the current Town Manager of Palm Beach, FL being executed Thursday evening by the Selectboard.
Selectboard Chair David Gartenstein said that Elwell has the experience, perspective, vision, and attention to detail that the job requires. Elwell was in town for interviews last Friday and Monday.
