Sponsored by USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), HUSSC is a voluntary national certification initiative for schools participating in the National School Lunch Program. It supports First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign by recognizing schools that are creating healthier school environments by promoting nutrition and physical activity.

Growing out of her experience with the Chamber of Commerce and after Wilmington was decimated by Tropical Storm Irene flooding, Laura Sibilia of BDCC helped create what she terms “two separate mechanisms” to address collaboration in the areas of tourism and employee recruitment.

When Atlas Advertising of Denver, CO representatives visit this area July 23-25, they will meet with focus groups comprised of the top five to ten employers in each area within the region. These are the “major stakeholders” identified by the Chambers of Commerce. The visit will begin with a focus on recruitment, meeting in Bellows Falls with major emloyers, in Brattleboro with workforce development, followed by tours of Bennington and Bellows Falls and meeting with the Human Resources group in Manchester.

Brattleboro Downtown Sidewalk Project Meeting

Residents and Business Owners:

The Town is planning to install new sidewalks on the east side of Main Street, starting at the Gilbert Memorial Bridge and continuing north to Walnut Street. Some sections of this sidewalk were recently replaced as part of a VTrans project. The Downtown Sidewalk Project will replace the sections that have not yet been upgraded. The project is intended to improve safety for pedestrians and create a more attractive Main Street. Two FHWA Enhancement grants and a local match in the form of a bond fund this project.

Building a Better Brattleboro Selects Next Stewards of the Robert H. Gibson River Garden

The Board of Directors of Building a Better Brattleboro today announced that it is in negotiations to transfer ownership of the Robert H. Gibson River Garden to the Strolling of the Heifers organization.

The details of the transfer are still being finalized, but the Strolling of the Heifers has committed to honor the spirit of the original intent of the building by keeping the space open to the public and providing visual access to the Connecticut River. The building will continue to be known as the Robert H. Gibson River Garden.

Calling All Truckers! 5th Annual Brattleboro Memorial Hospital Touch a Truck Event

Plans for the 5th Annual Brattleboro Memorial Hospital Touch a Truck event are underway. And we would love for you to participate.

This fun event annually brings over 50 vehicles to the BMH parking lot for kids (and many adults) to look at, climb on and explore. Fire trucks, police cruisers, motorcycles, backhoes, dump trucks, school buses and many, many more converge for a few hours. Last year it is estimated that over 800 children attended.

A Wood Thrush Sang In Forest Square

Through most of late June and early July, it was impossible to live anywhere near the town woods and not hear the eerie call of the wood thrush.  They seemed to be everywhere.  For a while, believing they were rarer than they are, I thought it might be just one or two who got around a lot.  But I heard them so regularly and in such scattered places — Cedar Street, Forest Street, the Retreat trails — that I decided there must be more than a few.

I decided to calm my nerves by investing in a little paint.

I got out my ladder (July 21, 2013)  so I could reach the top of the 8 foot high arch created by a the first section of a long tree branch about 40 feet long that suddenly fell (July 17, 2013)  about 15 feet from where I was standing in my garden.

I noticed a “for rent” sign in their window yesterday.  It seems like the place is busy.  There are often people hanging out in front, smoking.  And they’ve only been open a few months.  I hope everything is okay with them.

July 17th – SeVWA’s 3rd River Sampling Day of 2013‏

Southeastern Vermont Watershed Alliance’s (SeVWA’s) water quality monitoring program was begun about 10 years ago. At that time, the organization was known as West River Watershed Alliance (WRWA). This past Wednesday, July 17th, was our third 2013 river sampling day.

Thankfully the weather had calmed down a bit in comparison to our last sampling day two weeks before – though the temperatures have been extremely high. The hot, dry spell has the rivers back to more normal levels and it has also influenced most of our sampling locations’ E. coli numbers to be at acceptable levels for swimming and/or boating. There were a few sites on the Williams and Saxtons Rivers that were just above the 235 E. coli per 100 ml. standard.
