Spoiler Alert: If you plan to read The Way We Live Now by Anthony Trollope, be aware that I’m going to spill the beans on fairly major plot elements.

I bought it for the title – and the introductory essay by David Brooks, whose description of the novel’s contemporary relevance immediately evoked Donald Trump. It being 2017, I was vulnerable to the book’s themes, and ventured to embark on this 900 page account of British society circa 1870 and the fabulously wealthy foreigner who briefly upends their world. The book is, of course, The Way We Live Now, by Anthony Trollope. The disruptive foreigner is a Frenchman by the name of Augustus Melmotte, Esq., whose reputation and aura as the richest man in all the land soon has London society fawning at his feet.

Hi All, I wanted to just share some communication from our Brattleboro Police Department’s Chief Fitzgerald concerning the recent increase in auto larcenies. This comes at my request to let everyone know rapidly that the town is aware of the uptick, is pursuing leads, and some further information on current laws regarding these distressing activities. Also please be aware that I’ve requested that either the Chief or Capt Carignan be present at our next two Selectboard meeting to answer any questions from the public. Vermont Companies Support Employees’ Call for Urgent Climate Action

Burlington, VT, January 23, 2020 – Some of Vermont’s most iconic companies gave employees time off today to lobby policy makers at the Statehouse in Montpelier.  More than 100 employees met with elected officials and called on the Governor and the legislature to make climate change a priority in this legislative session and to pass a package of laws to ensure that Vermont meets its goals of a 40% reduction of GHG levels by 2030, and 80-95% reduction by 2050.

The employees warned that Vermont’s failure to reduce carbon emissions is damaging to the economy, environment, and their way of life.

An Advanced State of Decay

The American form of government is in an advanced state of decay. An argument might even be made that we are witnessing the final gasps of a failed centuries-long experiment. On the other hand, one might say that what we now have is just a logical evolution of a country created by slaveowners and an elite corps of wealthy white men. There are always many ways to look at events.

When the majority of people in a society are being used as pawns by a privileged few then I believe that the government has failed to uphold basic human values. If we want to nurture a democracy then we have to promote what is best for most of us.

Elevator Repairs – Brattleboro Transportation Center

The elevator at the Brattleboro Transportation Center was taken offline at the end of October, 2019 following an act of vandalism which destroyed the communications equipment within the elevator and rendered the unit out of compliance with applicable building safety code. The cab of the elevator was already scheduled for replacement in the FY20 Parking Capital program and so rather than repair the damage the decision was made to initiate the cab replacement project. 

Downtown Brattleboro Street Snow Removal

The Town of Brattleboro would like to remind everyone that the snow emergency ban is in effect.   

Snow and ice will be removed from the streets in the downtown area this evening.   

Parked vehicles in the downtown district must be removed by 11:00pm or they will be towed at the owner’s expense.
