Putney Bridge Deck Replacement Public Meeting

The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) will hold a public information meeting on Thursday, November 14, 2019 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Putney Fire Station, 21 Carl Snyder Drive, Putney. The purpose is to discuss a project that will replace the deck of the US Route 5 bridge in Putney Center at the intersection of Kimball Hill Road. Construction will start in Spring 2020.

The existing structure is a single span cast-in-place deck on rolled beams constructed in 1954. The bridge is owned and maintained by the State of Vermont. VTrans bridge inspectors have observed areas of heavy saturation, cracking, and evidence of significant concrete deterioration. VTrans engineers determined that the most cost effective and viable approach to address deterioration of the aging bridge deck is to replace it.

Especially during the winter, living in a rural part of the state can be incredibly scenic, but not necessarily convenient. Brattleboro Sub Station Fire Press Release

At 10:25am Engine 2 & Utility 8 responded to the Power Sub Station just south of the Veterans’ Bridge for a reported transformer fire. Upon arrival they had a significant fire in a large power vault and transformer. An attack line was stretched to the area but the decision was made to let the fire burn due to high voltage electric equipment. Green Mountain Power arrived on the scene shortly after the arrival of the 1st fire apparatus and got the power killed to the sight and the fire burned out approximately 15 minutes after that.

School Board for Guilford, Dummerston, Putney and Brattleboro To Take Up Turf Field Resurfacing on November 6th

On Wednesday, November 6th the Windham Southeast School District (WSESD) School Board will meet at 6:00 p.m. in the Cusick Conference room on the second floor of the Windham Regional Career Center, 80 Atwood Street, Brattleboro. The board is scheduled to discuss the resurfacing of Brattleboro Union High School’s (BUHS) Natowich Field. The focus of the field portion of the meeting will be on BUHS’s proposal t0 resurface the field using artificial turf. Board sub-committees will present research on topics related to the three proposed resurfacing options, followed by discussion by the entire board and a possible vote. All are welcome to attend and comment.

Brattleboro, Dummerston, Guilford, and Putney Citizens Invited to Vote on Proposed Amendments to WSESD Articles of Agreement

On Tuesday, November 19th, 2019, an election will be held by the Windham Southeast School District (“WSESD”) in the four towns of the district, Brattleboro, Dummerston, Guilford, and Putney. Citizens of the towns of the WSESD will have the opportunity to vote, by Australian Ballot, to approve or reject proposed amendments to the Articles of Agreement, the bylaws governing the WSESD. Vermont allows voter registration up to and on the day of an election. Early voting begins October 30th, 2019.

Opening Week for the Winter Farmers’ Market

The Brattleboro Winter Farmers’ Market opens its 14th season on Saturday, November 2nd once again in the C. F. Church Building at 80 Flat St in downtown Brattleboro. After the last outdoor market in October, fans of the famous summer farmer’s market in West Brattleboro, can simply follow many of their favorite vendors indoors to the only weekly farmers market in the region. The Brattleboro Winter Farmers’ Market is open every Saturday, 10- 2, November through March.

Visitors will find plenty of farms and local produce, and this great location provides easy convenient parking and a spacious market where we can adequately serve both our vendors and customers. Most weeks, market visitors will find over 2 dozen vendors, including many favorites from past seasons and some new faces as well.

We moved our web design business to Brattleboro in 2001. People around Brattleboro were mostly using modems, and Sovernet was just beginning to sign people up for (relatively slow) DSL connections. We limped by, overpaid, and designed local web sites for low bandwidth knowing most people were stuck at low speeds around here.

As time went on, things didn’t really speed up much here, but friends (and competitors) in bigger cities were leaping ahead. While we were lucky to get 3-7 Mbps here, they were enjoying 200 Mbps or more.

Brattleboro Early/Absentee Ballots Available For Special School Merger Election

Early/absentee ballots for the Special School Merger Election to be held November 19, are now available in the Brattleboro, Town Clerk’s office.  Anyone wishing to vote prior to November 19 may apply for an early/absentee ballot until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 18.

Early/absentee ballots may be voted in person in the Clerk’s office, mailed to the voter by the Clerk’s office, picked up by the voter, or if a voter is in need can be delivered to the voter’s residence by two Justices of the Peace.  All voted ballots must be received by the Clerk before the polls close on election day in order to be counted.  For more information or to request an early/absentee ballot call 251-8157.

It’s Not Happening Here

An October 18 article on the Medscape web site titled, “Over 700 Doctors Paid More Than $1 Million by Drug, Medical Device Companies”, got me to wondering about how our local doctors compare to some of their greedy counterparts in other areas of the country.

The article noted that, “Back in 2013, ProPublica detailed what seemed a stunning development in the pharmaceutical industry’s drive to win the prescription pads of the nation’s doctors: In just four years, one doctor had earned $1 million giving promotional talks and consulting for drug companies; 21 others had made more than $500,000. Six years later — despite often damning scrutiny from prosecutors and academics — such high earnings have become commonplace.”
