Taxation in Brattleboro
“What shall the tax of Brattleboro be this year?” is a question asked by many. The completion of the grand list furnishes the necessary information. An examination of the town auditor’s report (page 21) shows the expenses, outside of the reduction of debt or extraordinary repairs upon highways, to be estimated at $8,773, and for this sum the auditors report sufficient resources already provided.
There’s something about hearing really good bands in tiny spaces. The intimacy is palpable. You’re not just watching a band play — you’re two feet away from the guitarist who has just remarked, to no one in particular, that there’s a buzz in his amp, at which half the audience rushes over to help. And some nights, you wonder if ten years from now, you’ll be thinking “I remember when…” That’s the calibre of group that The Future Collective is bringing to Brattleboro, and last night the twin treat came from two unlikely places — Stamford, CT and Philadelphia, PA. Ok, admittedly, Philadelphia has some popular caché but Stamford?

Have you seen the rowers on the West River this spring? Brattleboro Outing Club’s RowBOC and the Putney Rowing Club have teamed up to offer a Learn to Row Clinic and they are still accepting novice rowers.
Meet other new rowers learning to row under the expert instruction of Tim Whitney, Grahame King, Thom Collins and Kristin Dawley. Clinic sessions take place on the West River and the Connecticut River at both rowing clubs.

I can’t be the only person who is not only seeing these things, but who is getting photos of them. I mean, its kind of like dousing fro water in Vermont. You would be hard pressed to douse for water and find a location that had none. With UFO’s its pretty hard to take a picture and not end up with a UFO in the frame somewhere. See what I mean ?
The Town of Brattleboro is deceiving its people.
Specifically, I note that, next week, the town will host a couple of “visioning” sessions for residents.
The lie is that these sessions are to hear what the people of Brattleboro want their town to look like years from now, so that this common “vision” can be implemented.
The truth is that Brattleboro is a member of ICLEI, the executive arm of the United Nations’ Agenda 21, Blueprint for Humanity, a self-described UN effort to control all human behavior and to impose “universal design” on what it refers to as all “human settlements.”
The Guilford Historical Society will hold its annual plant and bake sale on Saturday, May 17 , from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm, rain or shine. The sale will take place in the algiers section of guilford at Richmond’s Garage at the corner of US Route 5 (the Coolidge highway) and the Guilford Center Road, one mile south of exit 1 of I-91 and opposite the Guilford Country Store.
The sale will feature plants that are all moderately priced and that have been locally raised. There will also be a variety of baked goods from some of the finest cooks in the Guilford area. Pies, cookies, and other delicacies will be offered.
A Chicken BBQ will be sponsored by the West Brattleboro Association (WBA) on Saturday, May 24th, starting at 11 a.m. and lasting until it’s all gone. So plan to get to the event in front of the First Congregational Church on Western Avenue in West Brattleboro in plenty of time to enjoy chicken and fixin’s. And while you’re there you can also get dessert at the bake sale sponsored by the First Congo Church.
For $6 you can get half a barbecued chicken, or you can enjoy it with sides of baked beans and coleslaw for $10. The recipes used to make these goodies have a local history. The chicken barbecue sauce recipe is one used for the Guilford Fair Fireman’s BBQ for many years by Joe Jewett when he was a member of the fire department. Joe is the ‘griller extraordinaire’ for this semi-annual WBA Chicken BBQ and he still makes the Firehouse BBQ Sauce!
Due to equipment issues, the two-day closure of Dummerston Road where it intersects with I-91did not start today, as previously planned. The closure will occur on Monday and Tuesday, May 19 and 20, for daytime hours only, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

This week’s concert series is a double header, and a gift to Lise.
First up is Stereolab, live in Danbury, Connecticut on September 21 1994. It’s the full band performing at the Tuxedo Junction just after they released Mars Audiac Quintet.
If you’ve never heard them, it’s worth a listen. It’s rather hypnotic and musical, foreign and familiar, electronic and dancer. I think I may have played a different show by them a long while back, but this is good.
MIDDLEBURY, Vt., May 16 – U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz spoke at a Vermont Energy Summit today as part of a first-hand look at how Vermont is on the cutting edge of transforming its energy systems from fossil fuels to sustainable energy.
In remarks at Middlebury College, Moniz focused on the need to reduce the cost of clean energy. Vermont, he added, “really looks unique” in terms of public and private cooperation on energy issues.
The Brattleboro Selectboard hopes to vote on a final and revised $15,881,866 FY15 budget Tuesday night in preparation for the special June 2 Representative Town Meeting.
They will also take up the issue of a Pay As You Throw committee, liquor permits, grants, and a monthly financial report. If there’s something you’d like to bring up that isn’t on the agenda, you can do so doing Public participation.
