Keene, NH – Savings Bank of Walpole (SBW) and the Monadnock Broadcasting Group/KNE-FM are once again teaming up with Douglas Cuddle Toys to support the Salvation Army of Keene’s annual Good Friends campaign — the largest fundraising effort in the Keene area that’s facilitated by outside organizations.
Beginning on Thursday, November 10 and throughout the holiday season, all SBW branches will serve as point-of-sale locations, selling stuffed animals generously donated by Douglas Cuddle Toys for $10 each. The Salvation Army receives 100 percent of the sale proceeds and uses the funds to help the community and those in need. Last year’s campaign raised over $21,000.
In observance of Veterans’ Day, all Brattleboro town offices will be closed on Friday, November 11, 2016, with the exception of emergency services.
Parking is free at all metered spaces and in the pay-and-display lots on Friday, November 11. All other violations will be enforced.
Brooks Memorial Library will be closed on Friday, November 11, 2016.

On Saturday, November 12th at 8:00 PM, the Vermont Jazz Center will present saxophonist Javon Jackson’s quartet “We Four” featuring renowned drummer Jimmy Cobb (who has had tenures with Miles Davis, John Coltrane etc.) along with Jeremy Manasia on piano and David Williams on acoustic bass. We Four’s understated promo reads “four jazz luminaries who join together to lovingly pay tribute to John Coltrane and the music of his time.”
Their CD (with a different pianist and bassist) sticks to the more accessible late ‘50s/early ‘60s era of Coltrane’s repertoire presenting choice standards like “My Shining Hour” and “You Don’t Know What Love Is” as well as familiar Coltrane compositions such as “Like Sonny and Naima.” San Francisco Jazz Collective states “Since John Coltrane’s death in 1967 at the age of 40 there has been no shortage of tributes to the saxophone titan. The Dummerston Community Center will host Archer Mayor’s appearance and discussion on his most recently published book ” Presumption of Guilt” on Monday, November 14th at 7 pm. Joe Gunther investigates a very cold “missing person” case after the discovery of a 40 year old skeleton at the decommissioned Vermont Yankee plant.
The Community Center is located in the West Dummerston Village, off Route 30. The event is free.
Books will be available for purchasing and for Archer’s autograph.

Kenneth Gloss, proprietor of the internationally known Brattle Book Shop in Boston’s Downtown Crossing section, will give a free and open talk, and will give free verbal appraisals of books, on Wednesday, November 16 at 6:30 pm at Brooks Memorial Library, 224 Main Street, Brattleboro, VT. Ken will discuss the value of old and rare books. Ken, who is also a frequent guest appraiser on PBS’ Antiques Roadshow, will talk in part about the history of his historic bookshop (www.brattlebookshop.com), which goes back to around 1825.
The Brattleboro Time Trade is having their monthly potluck dinner social at the Brattleboro Museum and Art Center on Monday, November 7 from 5:30-7:30. These monthly socials are open to the entire community to learn about what Time Trade is about. Check out the new artwork in the museum and meet fellow time traders! All are welcome!

West Brattleboro — The foyer and other gallery spaces at All Souls Church Unitarian Universalist are showing paintings — from race horses to raptors to farm animals and more — by retired veterinarian Robin Truelove Stronk through the end of December. The public is invited to an artist’s reception and book signing from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 5.
This exhibit includes four large canvases featuring race horses and dressage horses painted with the fingers and palm of Robin’s left hand while she was recuperating from surgery on her dominant right hand. Several raptors and owls will also make an appearance: “My focus in my art is the eye of the animal, and they have such large, amazing eyes that I find them irresistible,” she says. Other works include two oversize florals; three large fabric feed bags with graphics creatively enhanced by many colorful breeds of chicken; and a “mixed bag” of other farm animals.
