Forum to Feature Windham County State Senate Candidates

The public is invited to attend a forum featuring the candidates running to represent Windham County in the Vermont State Senate.

The event will take place on Monday, October 3, 2022, 6:30pm-8pm at Epsilon Spires, 190 Main Street, Brattleboro.  The forum will also be streamed live on Brattleboro Community Television’s (BCTV) Facebook page, broadcast live on Comcast Channel 1085 and available on brattleborotv.org.

Ana Saavedra Elected President of Youth Services Board During 50th Anniversary

Ana Saavedra, financial advisor at Edward Jones Investments, recently assumed the role of President of the Youth Services Board of Directors, taking the reins from Cathy Coonan whose two-year term ended in July.  Saavedra has been on the agency’s Board of Directors for the past 15 years in a number of leadership positions.

During her tenure on the Youth Services board, Saavedra has held the position of Vice President and has served on the Executive and Gala committees. She has chaired the Development, Endowment and Planned Giving committees for a decade or more.

The Heating Season Is Near

Some people welcome the cold weather because they enjoy winter sports. Finding some joy in winter is a good thing but there is no joy in thinking about how much it will cost to heat our homes. The average price of a gallon fuel in Vermont as of September is: $5.53 for kerosene, $4.63 for #2 fuel oil and $3.03 for propane. That will strain the pocketbook of most of us and there will too many people who will be on the verge of freezing to death when they have to decide how to pay for rent, medicine and heat in an economy that has not been kind to those who are trying to simply survive and get by.

Nineteen years ago Daryl Pillsbury and I started the Windham County Heat Fund because we thought the price of heating fuel was going to put too many of our vulnerable friends and neighbors in harm’s way during the heating season. We figured we could abandon our project in a few years after the price of fuel dropped.

Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present an afternoon of banjo and bluegrass with Tony Trischka & Robot Plane and Hot Mustard, as part of the 2022 Next Stage “Bandwagon Summer Series,” on Sunday, October 9 at 3:00 pm at West River Park in Brattleboro, VT. A mix of the new and the old, the concert features banjo legend Tony Trischka’s brand new quartet, while twin banjo band Hot Mustard reunites after an eight-year hiatus to open the show.

Steeped in Bluegrass, while stretching out into Celtic, Americana, and Progressive music, Tony Trischka & Robot Plane includes acoustic music all-stars Jacob Joliff (mandolin), Jared Engel (acoustic bass), and Hannah Read (fiddle). These extraordinarily versatile and talented musicians are alumni of bands such as Country Cooking, Breakfast Special, Joy Kills Sorrow, Yonder Mountain String Band, and Bela Fleck’s My Bluegrass Heart.

The Brattleboro Selectboard will hold a special meeting on Friday, September 23, 2022 at 8:15am in the Selectboard Meeting Room at the Municipal Center. The Board will convene at 8:15am and is expected to immediately enter into executive session to discuss the appointment or employment or evaluation of a public officer or employee. The Board will reconvene after the executive session and immediately adjourn. No action will be taken.

Did you watch the Queen’s Funeral “live” today?

If you can trace your ancestry back to the mid 1700s, the King of Great Britain was keeping track of your ancestors before then because prior to the Declaration of Independence, he was still trying to get tax dollars out of them.

While watching the proceedings of Queen Elizabeth’s funeral, I wanted to trace a piece of jewelry that I had always thought was junk jewelry because great aunt Annie called it a “trinket”.

Brattleboro’s Bethanie Yeakle to perform with Nashville’s Tiffany Williams plus Sara Trunzo on October 9 in Bellows Falls

BELLOWS FALLS — Nashville-based Tiffany Williams grew up in an Eastern Kentucky coal camp house, the daughter, granddaughter, and great-granddaughter of coal miners. Her debut album, All Those Days of Drinking Dust, produced by Grammy-nominated Duane Lundy, is solidly in the New Appalachian Movement that tangles tradition and heritage with contemporary leanings. Her evocative voice rises like the mountains and wanders low and snaky as the creeks of the place she was born and raised.

Brattleboro Selectboard Meeting – Agenda and Notes – September 20, 2022

The Brattleboro Selectboard will approve a $50,000 annual increase in fees to Golden Cross at their next regular meeting. This will cover a 3rd ambulance and a second full time AEMT provider.

The board will also discuss a “Declaration of Inclusion,” authorize sewer repairs, continue with committee appointments. You can, additionally, bring up other items not on the agenda during public participation.

Visual Artist Destiny Palmer Discusses Creative Process at Landmark College, September 27

The Landmark College Academic Speaker Series presents visual artist Destiny Palmer on Tuesday, September 27 at 5 p.m. in in the Brooks M. O’Brien Auditorium, located in the Lewis Academic Building.

The Boston-based artist will discuss her public art and studio-based practice that function as places to create dialogue and make space for investigation. Palmer will also share how her practice has ebbed and flowed to what it has become now, centered around color, abstraction and history.

Rocks, Paper, Scissors – New Exhibit at West Village

Rocks, Paper, Scissors, a multimedia exhibit by six area artists, is now on view at All Souls Church in the West Village Meeting House through October 31.The public is invited to a reception on Saturday, September 24, 2 to 4 pm.

The exhibit, curated by Stuart Copans, focuses on Vermont rocks, both actual ones and those portrayed in works of art by Copans, Maisie Crowther, Don Fitzpatrick, Kip King, Steven Meyer, and Charles Siggins II, Rocks preserve the rich and elaborate patterns that waves and currents create on the floor of the ocean as well in mountain streams, where the water flows in curves and spirals that are reproduced in the flow of molten rock that solidifies to preserve the patterns of both flow and turbulence.
