When Peter Shumlin announced he wouldn’t be running for Governor again, Rep. Peter Welch announced he would consider becoming the next governor.

Bobby Jindal has announced his intention to become the next President:
“I’m running for President of the United States of America. Join me.”
I find it interesting that one of the outcomes of the shooting in Charleston appears to be the dismantling of the imagery that appealed to the shooter. Overnight, the Confederate flag is something for politicians to distance themselves from, and calls for its removal from license plates, statehouses, and other official uses are being acted upon. Long a symbol of southern pride, its days seem numbered.
Dylann Roof probably didn’t anticipate this reaction, but he accomplished it.
I know little about this Brian Regan fellow. This was recommended to me by someone just yesterday as stand-up comedy in the “good, clean” genre, without reliance on swearing to make people laugh. Count me in!
Regan does this by talking about food labels, flying first class, and refrigerators, among other things.
The Town of Brattleboro sent out a postcard to town residents with information about the upcoming changes to the way our trash is bagged.
Next week is the final week for putting out trash in non-paid bags. PAYT starts June 29th.
At their regular Tuesday meeting, the Brattleboro Selectboard dealt primarily with money issues — spending, granting, analyzing, raising, applying for, and otherwise interacting with it. It wasn’t always the main topic of discussion, but it was an undercurrent. Much of it was good news, too.
For example, it was announced that over $50,000 has been allocated for artists applying to fulfill the public arts component of the NEA Our Town grant, and requests for proposals will be out shortly. Many Town employees will receive raises.
The Brattleboro Selectboard also learned about keeping water clean, discussed cable access, purchased a variety of vehicles, and approved contracts for new roads and sidewalks.

Here is Sandra Bernhard performing at the Lhasa Club, in Studio City/Hollywood, CA, in 1984. I did not know that this existed until today.
In 1984, Bernhard was mixing performance art with stand-up, and was attracting attention. The film appears to be one of her one-woman shows, post- King of Comedy but prior to working on her stage production and film “Without You, I’m Nothing.” This has bits from “Without You…” in early forms.
A call for artists and RFP for Phase III of the Our Town Grant will be at the top of the Tuesday agenda for the Brattleboro Selectboard. The Town Arts Committee may also be re-sized.
The Main Street Sidewalk project is getting underway, new police equipemnt will be purchased, and discussions of ponds, cable, dogs, finances, farmlands, FY16 union employee raises, DPW purchases, and more.
You can bring up other items during public participation if they aren’t otherwise on the agenda.
I checked the trash bag section at Hannaford today, to see if there was an exciting new display of PAYT bags and helpful information for getting started. No such luck.
But, at the checkout, the cashier did ask if I was from Brattleboro.
“Yes?”
“We have the new Pay As You Throw bags,” she said. They are for sale from the cashiers, not in the aisles.
Today, while reading an 1855 account of the local fireman’s festival, I came across the following whopper of a sentence. It kicked off the story, and I thought writers and fans of writing would enjoy it.

Governor Peter Shumlin just held a press conference to announce he will not be running… for governor of Vermont in the next election. He says he’s accomplished his goals, according to WCAX.

Remember Richard Pryor? He grew up in a brothel, was expelled from school, worked the comedy clubs, and ended up one of the most successful comedy writers and stars of the 70’s and 80’s. Go figure.
Rick Perry has decided that the time is right to run for president.
“Today I am running for the presidency of the United States of America.”
Lincoln Chafee has heard the call and realizes it is his time, too, to run for president.
“I enjoy challenges, and today we have many facing America. Today I am formally entering the race for the Democratic nomination for president.”
Issues of planning dominated the regular Tuesday meeting of the Selectboard. The Our Town Arts grant took a step forward, new design and building standards were presented, an EPA grant was awarded to the Planning Services department, and a revised Town Plan was approved.
The Town also bought a car, signed a letter of agreement with Entergy, and learned that Pay As You Throw has been planned well and is coming soon.
Lindsey Graham has decided the time is right to become president.
“Some of you have known me since I grew up in the back of that bar in that building, but no one here, including me, expected to hear me say, I’m Lindsey Graham, and I’m running for president of the United States.”
Martin O’Malley has declared his desire to become the next president of the United States.
“I declare that I am a candidate for president of the United States and I am running for you.”
