The Brattleboro Recreation and Parks Department is pleased to announce that the Living Memorial Park Pool will be opening for the season on Saturday, June 22nd, 2019 at 1:00 p.m.
In addition to the daily pool fee, there will also be season pool passes available for purchase. Swim Lessons will be Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-Noon, General Swim will be Sunday-Saturday 1:00 p.m.- 4 p.m.,

Sacred Postpartum is about honoring the postpartum period. In this ongoing and special class, you will be invited to share your stories, truths, and questions as well as connect with other new mothers. You will also have the opportunity to stretch, strengthen, and reconnect with your body through gentle yoga.
Each Sacred Postpartum class will begin with a sharing circle where we’ll explore a different postpartum topic each week and then we will move through a yoga practice that will be specific to the healing postpartum body.

Burlington, Vermont, 5/30/19 –Today 500+ Union members and allies picketed the GOP fundraiser in Burlington which featured extremist Union-buster Scott Walker and Vermont Republican Governor Phil Scott. The picket was organized by AFSCME-VT, IBEW Local 300, The Vermont Buildings Trades, and dozens of other Unions & pro-Labor community/political organizations. Labor appreciates the support received by U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders who reached out to supporters yesterday to express his backing of the picket and to encourage Vermonters to demonstrate alongside us.
The demonstration was electric! Speakers included AFSCME Local 1343 President Damion Gilbert, myself [VT AFL-CIO District Vice President/AFSCME Local 2413 member David Van Deusen], IBEW Organizer Danielle Bombardier, President of APWU-Vermont President Omar Fernandez, and many other Labor and community leaders (*see below for full list of speakers).

The Conservation Commission will conduct a work session in the West River Park on Thursday, June 6 at 4:30 PM. The purpose of this work session is to manually control Japanese Knotweed along the West River in the West River Park. Conservation Commission members will be cutting Japanese Knotweed.
Participants should wear sturdy shoes and bring gloves and loppers or another garden cutting tool. Extra loppers will be available. Interested participants may arrive at any time and can find Commission members along the riverbank with the West River. The path to the riverbank is near the kiosk at the end of the parking lot.
Showing you how to see your garden in a new way – that’s what well-known landscape designer Gordon Hayward has in mind for his lecture, The Intimate Garden. His free talk will be held from 6:30-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 6th, at the Westminster Institute, Route 5 in Westminster. Light refreshments will be served. It’s a special advance program to the Westminster Cares Garden Tour, July 20-21.
Gordon Hayward, acclaimed landscape designer, writer, and teacher from Westminster West, was recently named an honorary member of the Garden Club of America (GCA), during its annual meeting in Boston. The honorary membership, one of the club’s highest accolades, is given each year to no more than four recipients in such fields as horticulture and conservation.
Somewhere between the years of 1978-1980, there was a computer class on Main Street, does anyone remember or know the person who ran this class?
I believe the computers were TRS-80s & I think the location was the Hooker-Dunham building (138 Main) on the second floor.
May 21, 2019 -Vermont has lost one of our most remarkable woman; today film maker, journalist, Black Panther historian, communard, Green Mountain Red, revolutionary, and (ironically) Richmond constable Roz Payne has left this world and these Green Hills for points beyond. Roz grew up in a working class-leftist household in New Jersey. Her mother was a union organizer in Lawrence, MA in the 1930s, and her father ran for NJ State Senate as a member of the Socialist Party. Poet Allen Ginsberg was her sometimes babysitter.

A cookbook named America Cooks, published 1949, contains recipes from all over the states. In the rather short Vermont section I came across “Brattleboro Pudding”. There’s no background, origin or story, merely the recipe. So here goes, have at it.

The Putney Farmers’ Market will celebrate it’s 10th season on opening day, this Sunday, May 26th. Activities for the whole family include creating a collaborative community art project, traditional Celtic tunes by Gowan Brae, Birthday cake provided by the Putney Food Co-op and 25+ vendors.
The Putney Farmers’ Market features an array of local farmers and artisans offering a variety of fresh produce, mushrooms, pastured meats, grass-fed dairy (including ice cream!), preserves, prepared foods, herbal remedies and body care products as well as jewelry, cut flowers, pottery, handmade toys, clothing, shoes, and more!

The Brattleboro Conservation Commission is kicking off a summer long effort to manage Japanese knotweed along the banks of the West River in the West River Park. Join us on Tuesday, May 28 at 4:30 PM to learn how to control this invasive as well as lend a hand in stewarding this important local resource.
Participants of all ages are welcome. Wear clothing and footwear appropriate for the weather, and bring loppers or pruners to use for removing knotweed. You will also want to have good gardening or work gloves. Volunteers should meet at the entrance of the trail down to the West River. The Conservation Commission will have extra supplies available and is willing to show participants how to identify and cut the knotweed. Water and snacks will be provided.
Featuring a new menu including gluten-free chapati rolls, thali plates, and, of course, masala dosa. We will have Walpole ice cream again this year.
Come meet Kassie Harris, our new evening chef, who comes to us via Austin, Texas, and has cooked for Indian restaurants and food trucks there.
The Strolling of the Heifers Parade is Saturday, June 8. I volunteered to coordinate the Parade and I am looking for some help. There are two roles in particular, Parade Marshal and the highly coveted “Cowpie Crew” described below.

There was an election yesterday to choose directors for the new district school board. Admittedly, it was a pretty low-profile affair. None of the local media have reported the results (the newspapers, of course, went to press too early to await the results, and the local radio station seemed oblivious; nothing posted in the WSESU website, either, tho they were the ones tallying the returns.)
Brattleboro Area Prevention Coalition (BAPC) held its first annual May Day Mocktail Contest and Dance Party on Wednesday, May 1, at the 118 Elliot Street Gallery. The event honored around 50 people in the Brattleboro area who signed up to take a break from drinking for BAPC’s first “Alcohol-Free April” challenge.
“Because alcohol is so prevalent in our society and our community, BAPC really wanted to use April, which is Alcohol Awareness Month, to encourage people to try to see what a month without alcohol would actually feel like,” says Cassandra Holloway, Director of BAPC. “For some, drinking alcohol can become an almost unconscious habit and we wanted to support those interested in taking the challenge and also celebrate their efforts and successes. It really is geared to be inclusive for ALL, from people looking to take a break to people in recovery”
