First Public Hearing on the Draft Brattleboro Land Use Regulations

This will be the first of two public hearings the Planning Commission will hold on the draft Brattleboro Land Use Regulations. The second hearing will be on Wednesday, September 9, also at 6 p.m. in the Selectboard Meeting Room.

The revised draft is available for review online and at the Brattleboro Planning Services Department, Town Clerk’s Office and the Brooks Memorial Library.This is an entirely new set of land use regulations that will affect the entire town, replacing the current Brattleboro Zoning Ordinance and Brattleboro Subdivision Regulations.

A New Bellydance and Youth Mentorship Program Comes to Brattleboro!

SEEDs (self-esteem, empowerment, and education through dance) is an internationally recognized bellydance and mentorship program, originally founded in 2001 by Myra Krein in Santa Fe, New Mexico. After seeing so much success in Santa Fe, Myra began an intensive teacher training program–and there are now dozens of blossoming SEEDs programs across the globe.

After attending the teacher training in June 2015, local bellydancer Kelsey Eaton bringing this fun and transformational youth bellydance program to Brattleboro. Working alongside her is Devan Moran, a woman’s advocate who works locally to educate youth on healthy relationships, domestic violence, and consent.

BS&L Slated to Open New Branch Monday, Aug. 31

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. – Brattleboro Savings & Loan will open its new branch in Black Mountain Square on Putney Road, Brattleboro on Monday, Aug. 31.

The new location represents months of building and renovation and is the latest entirely solar-powered bank branch operated by BS&L, which became the first completely solar-powered bank in Vermont earlier this year.

To introduce the new branch and call attention to the vibrant business community in Brattleboro’s Putney Road area, BS&L will also celebrate with Brattorama, a Monopoly-style game for all residents, from Sept. 9 – 23. More than 30 North End businesses have signed on as partners, each with their own spot on the Brattorama game board and stickers that can be collected to win prizes ranging from gift certificates to a $1,000 Savings CD from BS&L.

I was driving by Bondville yesterday and they were having the Bondville Fair, complete with rides such as Tilt a Whirls, Scramblers, giant slides, merry go rounds, and a Ferris Wheel and it got me thinking: Why doesn’t Brattleboro ever hold a carnival, with a midway, rides, food trucks, games, and so on?

No handfuls of tickets, no stepping over power cables, no sound of generators, no sight of colorful lights at the edges of every ride or booth.

Short Distance Moving Around Brattleboro?

Does anyone know of someone  I can hire to move one couch out of my Oak St. place and take it to the dump and move another couch into my house from West Brattleboro. I’m sure there must be somebody in the Brattleboro area who does this kind of thing but I haven’t been able to locate anyone. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

Friends of Music at Guilford’s 50th Season Opens at Organ Barn on Sept. 5 & 6

Guilford, Vt. – The opening weekend of Friends of Music at Guilford’s 50th Anniversary Season is dedicated to founder A. Graham Down (1929-2014), who brought the c. 1897 Guilford Tracker Organ to the Barn over a half-century ago, and funded its renovations and improvements over the years; he performed on it in 1966-69 and several times since 2001.

The music begins as usual with a Saturday night Organ Concert in the Barn at 7:30. This year’s guest performer is Susan Summerfield, music professor and college organist at Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vt. Her program, “Traditions,” includes works by Baroque masters J. S. Bach, Pierre Dandrieu, and Louis Couperin; C. P. E. Bach from the start of the classic period; and 20th-century composers Darius Milhaud and Lou Harrison, whose pieces employ certain Baroque elements. A cake and champagne reception follows.

Modern Cuban Culture and Cuisine at Brooks Library

Author, educator and chef John Verlinden will speak in the Brooks Library Meeting Room on Wednesday, September 16 at 7:00 about his new book, To Cook is To Love:  Nuevo Cuban: Lighter, Healthier Latin Recipes.  Admission is free and the event is sponsored by the Friends of Brooks Memorial Library.

This work is a multigenerational cultural tapestry of Cuban history, life, food, wine and music.  Chef Verlinden will prepare and share “tasting samples” with the audience.

BRATTLEBORO PRINTING AND PUBLISHING HERITAGE MEETING

The Brattleboro Historical Society and Friends of Brooks Memorial Library are collaborating to generate ideas about how to increase community awareness and interest in Brattleboro’s 200-year printing and publishing heritage.

Community members interested in this topic are invited to a brainstorming meeting on Tuesday, September 15 at 7PM at the Brattleboro History Center in the Masonic Center at 196 Main Street.

The purpose of the meeting will be to gather ideas for ways to interest and engage our community in learning more about the influential roles that Brattleboro’s publishing and printing industries have played throughout our history.

SeVWA’s 2015 E. coli Monitoring of Local River Sites Concluded August 26th

 The Southeastern Vermont Watershed Alliance (SeVWA) had its sixth and final monitoring day for the summer of 2015 on Wednesday, August 26th. All of our sites received significant rain in the day prior to sampling and 20 of our 27 sites tested above the “suitability for swimming” standard set by Vermont and the EPA. It is generally recommended to wait 24-48 hours after a significant rainfall to resume swimming in lakes and streams, so keep that in mind when making weekend plans on the water.

The kids are headed back to school and our monitoring season has come to a close. I want to take this time to extend a gigantic thank you to all of our volunteers who took time out of their Wednesday mornings to collect samples and help transport them to where they needed to go. We would not be able to make this program work without all of our amazing volunteers. So….THANK YOU!!!!!

Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes – September 1, 2015

The Town of Brattleboro will consider its role in a planned multi-million dollar expansion of the Exit 1 industrial park at the next regular meeting of the Selectboard, on Tuesday at the Municipal Center on Main Street. The proposed project will be in conjunction with the Brattleboro Development Credit Corporation and will extend town services to make more land developable. And keep G. S. Precision in town.

The board will also consider proposed changes to parking ordinances, support for the Groundworks Housing Resource Center planning project, a decision on a cell phone tower, and more. Watch on BCTV, and/or read about it here after the meeting.

Main Street Sidewalk Update #5

This is our fifth update on the Main Street Sidewalk Project. For those of you who are regularly downtown, you will have seen a flurry of activity!

This week curbing and sidewalk was removed all the way down to Centre Congregational Church. The contractor was able to install much of the conduit in that area for the underground electrical lines for the street lights. Green Mountain Power has completed the installation of the bases for the new light poles. The contractor has also began replacing some of the ramps and sidewalks in the areas across driveways on the northern end of the project. Our job site even survived the rain storm on Tuesday!

I wanted all my friends and neighbors here in Brattleboro to have a chance to see this. Ruby Sales, of Atlanta GA, gave this sermon Sunday morning August 23, 2015, at St. James Episcopal Church in Keene, NH, the home congregation of Jonathan Daniels, the 26-year-old white seminarian who was shot and killed, taking a shotgun blast in order to save her life, in white supremacist Alabama on August 20, 1965.

The first time I knew I was hypo-unaware I understood the danger I was in. Without knowing if my blood sugar is dropping to critically low numbers it was just a matter of time before this peculiar type of Russian Roulette would catch up to me. As vigilant as I am at testing, even I can’t beat those odds.I became a Type I diabetic at the age of 58. Like most Type I diabetics I was born with it. However, I have a rare form of adult onset insulin dependence. For most of my life I enjoyed robust health, unaware that an internal deadly clock was ticking inside of my body.

Groundworks Collaborative to hold Fifth Annual Hike for the Homeless on September 12th

BRATTLEBORO, VT – 8/26/2015 – Groundworks Collaborative will hold its fifth annual Hike for the Homeless fundraiser on Saturday, September 12 (rain date, September 13th), on Mount Wantastiquet in Hinsdale, NH. There will be two start times, 10am and 12:30pm, each beginning at the Mountain Road trailhead in Hinsdale (an immediate left after the second bridge on Route 119 when coming from downtown Brattleboro).

Registration begins at 9:30 for the 10am start, and at Noon for the 12:30pm start. Whether hiking to the summit or walking the River Trail at its base, participants can anticipate a beautiful late-summer hike and outstanding views of the town of Brattleboro. Hikers may raise funds individually (a minimum of $50 is suggested) or as a team (suggested minimum $250).

All proceeds from the Hike benefit Groundworks Collaborative’s work with families and individuals experiencing homelessness in Brattleboro and surrounding communities.
