Project Feed the Thousands 19th Annual Fundraising Kick-Off November 15, 2013

Brattleboro, Vermont – On Friday morning November 15th, Project Feed the Thousands will kick off its 19th annual food drive. The launch will take place at the Price Chopper Supermarket on Canal Street in Brattleboro, with a live broadcast hosted by long time media supporter, WTSA 96.7 FM.

The community goal this year is to raise $100,000 in cash and to collect enough provisions for 200,000 meals. The Project Feed the Thousands Team will collect non-perishable food, personal care items and cash donations on behalf of the thousands of people who face hunger each and every day throughout southeastern Vermont and southwestern New Hampshire.

Smoke-Free Zone: BUHS Students Clear the Air in Downtown Brattleboro

Have you seen the blue and orange Smoke-Free Zone stencils on the streets of downtown Brattleboro? Are you wondering how they got there? Check out this video and find out more:  

During the November Gallery Walk, BUHS students used non-toxic spray chalk to create Smoke-Free Zone stencils on the sidewalks in front of supporting Brattleboro businesses.

Downtown Brattleboro businesses who supported the project and allowed Smoke-Free Zone stencils in front of their business include Amy’s Bakery, Boys and Girls Club of Brattleboro, Brattleboro Bike Shop, Brooks Memorial Library, Burrows Specialized Sports, Candle In the Night, Everyone’s Books, Experienced Goods, Gallery in the Woods, Hotel Pharmacy, In the Moment Records, Insight Photography, Latchis Hotel & Theatre, Life’s Little Luxuries, Mystery on Main, Peter Havens, Renaissance Fine Jewelry, The River Garden, Silver Moon Adornments, Taylor for Flowers, Vermont Artisans Gallery and Windham Flowers.

I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project Update – Week of November 10, 2013

I-91

Northbound I-91 traffic will be relocated onto the southbound bridge on Tuesday, November 12th. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge in the Fall of 2015.

Night work on the existing I-91bridge will begin on Tuesday night, November 12th and will continue for the next several months, until demolition is complete.

Route 30

The speed limit on Route 30 near the work zone has been reduced to 40 mph.

Chris Hart Guest at West Brattleboro Association Monthly Meeting

On Thursday, November 14, 6:00-7:30 pm, the West Brattleboro Association (WBA) will hold its monthly meeting at The New England House, 254 Marlboro Road. The Association will have a final wrap-up on the success of their Columbus Day Weekend Chicken Barbecue held Saturday, October 12, in addition to a report of their treasury given by new association treasurer, Tim Cuthbertson.

The group will also have a quick review of the various projects undertaken by the WBA including traffic safety, bulb plantings, signage, police/fire facilities, and the status of the Neighborhoods Project.

Work on 1-91 Bridge Replacement in Brattleboro Leads to I-91 Lane Closures for Next Two Years

MONTPELIER, Vt.—November 8, 2013–

Work is beginning in earnest on a project to replace two existing bridges on I-91 with a single, four-lane structure that will accommodate both northbound and southbound traffic.

The PCL+FIGG Team that is working under contract to the Vermont Agency of Transportation announced today that northbound I-91 traffic will be relocated to one of the lanes on the southbound bridge starting on Tuesday, November 12th and continuing until the existing northbound bridge is demolished. Once the northbound bridge is demolished and the new bridge has been constructed, traffic will be rerouted to the new bridge while the southbound bridge is demolished. Throughout this process, traffic will be reduced to a single lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the project in the Fall of 2015.

Energy Committee Recognizes Local Green Businesses

The Brattleboro Energy Committee is pleased to announce the three recipients of the 2013 Sustainable Business Awards. The three award winners are Triple T Trucking, Cultural Intrigue, and the Brattleboro Food Co-op. These awards are given annually to Brattleboro-area businesses and nonprofits that are making extraordinary efforts to reduce energy and water use, lower carbon emissions, use renewable fuels, reduce solid waste, promote local food production, and use recycled materials and other environmentally-friendly products.

The awards will be presented at the Tuesday, November 19 Brattleboro Selectboard meeting, beginning at 6:15 pm in the Brattleboro Municipal Center, 230 Main Street.

Senate Passes Employment Non-Discrimination Act

WASHINGTON, Nov. 4 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) welcomed today’s 64-32 Senate vote in favor of a bill to prohibit workplace discrimination against gay, bisexual and transgender Americans.

“I am very pleased that the Senate has taken this important step toward making America the democratic and inclusive society it should be,” Sanders said. “Today’s vote was a long-overdue victory in the struggle to end workplace discrimination against gay and transgender Americans.”

Sanders Hails Dramatic Expansion of Community Health Centers in Vermont

WASHINGTON, Nov. 7 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today announced that the federal government designated three new community health centers in Vermont to increase from eight to 11 the number of health centers that will provide primary care for some 163,000 patients throughout the state.

“This is a huge step forward for health care in Vermont in providing high-quality, affordable primary care, dental care, low-cost prescription drugs and mental health counseling to people throughout Vermont,” said Sanders, chairman of a Senate subcommittee that oversees primary health care.

December Is The Time When UFAUX’s Float Overhead

Brattleboro Skatepark Site Selection Committee Applications Due Nov. 14

The Town of Brattleboro is looking for citizens to serve on the newly formed Skatepark Site Selection Committee. The Committee was formed by the Selectboard on November 5, 2013, and will consist of seven interested citizens. The Recreation & Parks Director will serve as lead staff member to support the Committee and also engage staff from other Town departments as needed.

Fox Screams Heard on Chestnut St. Last Night

We were woken a little after midnight by a hoarse barking sound under our window. It went on at intervals of maybe 2 or 3 seconds between each bark. There was an answering bark in the middle distance as well.

The barking moved from yard to yard pretty quickly, but seemed to come back to our yard several times before moving off for good.
