The speed limit on Route 30 near the work zone has been reduced to 40 mph. This reduction will remain in effect through the Spring of 2016.

Project-related truck activity on Route 30 will continue. Route 30 will be reduced to a single lane intermittently both day and night, with flaggers regulating traffic within the work zone.

150 Years Ago (1864 9/12)

Clifton Farm, Va.

Sept. 12th, 1864.

Dearest Abiah,-

Here we are yet, only our regiment has been moved down nearer the river and are doing picket duty by themselves. Came here Saturday. Saw Zopher just before we came; the same morning.

Perhaps it will do to talk a little about that commission. I have not wanted to say much about it heretofore, but it is probably not very far off. I received a note from Major Foster’s office with regard to the chances of three of us. James Tinkham Capt. There were then ten that preceded him and 21 ahead of me and W. S. Myers he was second Lieut. There were 43 preceding him.

Elm Street – The Sacred Cow is Untouched

What is really behind the battlelines over this park? Is any decision a good decision? Over time the amount of skatepark comments on iBrattleboro really overwhelmed its readership; it also exposed one of the deepest rifts seen in this microcosm of our community.

How could such a small community be so glaringly and bitterly divided for so long over what should have been a relatively simple matter? Two recent columns in the Reformer make the case for Elm Street as well as I’ve read anywhere on this topic of a skatepark site. Is it too late, or will we really putting this park out at Living Memorial?

Should Brattleboro Have a Co-Working Space?

Co-working Space – Should we have one?

When we two Vermonters walked into a co-working space in San Fransisco, we gasped. In front of us was a large room with long tables at which people were sitting laptops plugged into outlets in the middle of the tables.

It was quiet. Some people were walking around. A tour showed us the phone booths, a conference room, the coffee gallery (of course, it was San Fransisco) and and upstairs space where companies were renting larger offices.  The space was specifically for “social entrepreneurs.” For us two, who at the time regularly camped out at the Blue Moose, it was a vision of what we lack here.

Sanders Statement on Obama Speech on ISIS

WASHINGTON, Sept. 10 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) issued the following statement tonight after President Barack Obama delivered a nationally televised address on the Islamic State terrorist group:

“ISIS is a brutal and dangerous organization that must be defeated. I agree with the president that ISIS is a threat to the international community and must be combatted by the international community, not just the United States. Most importantly, this struggle will not be won without the active participation of the people of Iraq and Syria. This cannot be a unilateral American action. As we develop a long-term strategy, we must not forget the painful lessons learned by the Bush-Cheney wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. U.S. ground troops should not be sent back into combat. I support the president’s airstrike campaign and help for the Syrian opposition.”

Welch Statement Following President Obama’s Address

Washington, DC – Representative Peter Welch gave the following statement after the President addressed the nation tonight:

“I have appreciated the President’s clear-eyed restraint to date in responding to multiple, serious threats in this region. I have supported his use of military force to protect American personnel still in Iraq and to provide humanitarian assistance to refugees in cooperation with the competent Kurdish military in northern Iraq. I fully agree with him that American combat troops should not be deployed in the region. And I applaud his leadership in forcing Iraqi leaders to form a coalition government to respond to the threat posed by ISIS.

Question Re: Yard Sales This Weekend

I am having a yard sale this weekend (Saturday)on Western Avenue, household stuff. Is anyone in the Western Avenue/Tree Streets neighborhood having one also? I am wondering if we could combine them into a multi-family sale to improve traffic? Thanks.

Alan Dann

On Sunday night, the Brattleboro area lost a contributor to the community.

I first met Alan Dann through the Estey Organ Museum where we served together on the board. In this capacity, I learned of his musical abilities. Alan played organ, but also loved to sing. He would frequently be telling me of impending trips to foreign lands to sing with his college alumni choir.

Lower Green Street Closed

The Department of Public Works has closed Lower Green Street from Retting Place to High Street until further notice. An exception of the Lower Green Street entrance from High Street will temporarily be two way traffic only to allow entrance to the side of the building located at 22 – 26 High Street. There will be no through traffic allowed.

A stone retaining wall below lower Green Street is failing and the roadway is being closed for public safety.

Today (Monday) a section of Harmony Parking Lot will be closed so D&E Tree can remove trees on the bank between the Harmony Lot and Green Street. The parking lot is expected to be fully opened by noontime today.

The Green Street road closing and tree removal are all part of an immediate public safety plan.

It Is Time For Not For Profits To Pay Their Fair Share In Brattleboro – A PILOT Program

One solution to the chronic income short fall in Brattleboro is a program that has been implemented around the US with considerable success that has benefited cash strapped communities a Payment in Lieu of Taxes or PILOT for businesses that are listed as not-for profit and yet generate revenue.  While it would not be a legally binding, it is an agreement between the town and income generating business like the Brattleboro Hospital, Windham Land Trust, colleges, and not for profits that generate say more than $100,000 in revenues per annum to pay fixed percentage of revenues like the Brattleboro Housing Authority that pays 10% of their revenues as a PILOT.  Why should multimillion dollar businesses like Windham Land Trust, the hospital, the Retreat not contribute equit

150 Years Ago (1864 9/9)

Clifton Farm, Va. Sept. 9th, 1864.

Dear Cousin:-

Here I am, just about 1 ½ miles north of Berryville, Shenandoah Valley, Virginia. I promised to write to you when in Washington, but have had so much to do that until within the past two weeks have had time to write to anyone, except my wife. I will give you a history of our movements since joining the regiment. Passed the Casey Board in Washington as first Lieut. for colored troops June 12th, went to Camp Distribution June 14th, drew arms and equipment that night (mine had been turned over at Brattleboro) next morning took a transport for Bermuda Hundred, reached there the third day after leaving Alexander. We went to City Point and the 6th Army Corps had just crossed the Potomac and were in front of Petersburgh. Went up there and reported June 20th for the places I shall mention. I will refer you to Leslie’s Illustrated Paper for Sept. 10th.

David William Fischer: Edible Mushrooms and Plants in the Brattleboro Area

Due to a scheduling conflict, Chris Matherly, the mushroom hunter, will not be able to attend this workshop. Instead, meet mushroom expert David William Fischer at Brooks Memorial Library on Thursday, September 11, at 5 p.m. in the meeting room. Fischer, an internationally-known mycologist and ecologist, authored the classic books Edible Wild Mushrooms of North America and Mushrooms of Northeastern North America.

He has been a featured guest on NPR’s “Science Friday” program and his stunning mushroom photography has been spotlighted in numerous books and magazines. His web site — AmericanMushrooms.com — is a leading source of mushroom information. Fischer’s presentation will discuss edible wild mushrooms and plants in the Brattleboro area, with a 45-minute slideshow on how to safely find, identify and prepare common, delicious species. After his presentation, Fischer will be on hand to answer questions — you can bring your mushrooms for him to identify — and will have autographed copies of his books available.

Cathy Barrows Is Back!

Back in January I posted a question if anyone knew why Cathy Barrows was no longer the Animal Control Officer. () No one knew. No one in the police station was talking – except for saying that we didn’t currently have an Animal Control Officer. Last week, however, I was pleased to hear that she is back, and even more happy to see Cathy on patrol.

I still have no idea what happened and maybe it doesn’t matter, except to Cathy. But the coincidence is a bit too obvious to ignore. She was back behind the wheel at pretty much the same time we hired a new Police Chief.
