It was a really long Brattleboro Selectboard meeting with not much getting done! They heard about downtown safety issues, but took no action. They approved a mural design they couldn’t see. There will be more places to buy liquor. The preferred bridge design was selected. And then it was 10:30 pm with discussions of a woman right to choose and EMT issues, among other things, still awaiting ample discussion. They ended up postponing much of the agenda to a future meeting.

My daughter Margaret suggests that people who march with the banner wear black. It’s a great way to make a statement.

We’ll meet at the brook side of the Preston lot on Flat Street, opposite the transportation center, 9 am to 10 am. Look for the bamboo pole with the surveyors tape tied to it. That’s us.The parade committee recommends parking at the Coop.

Brattleboro Selectboard – Agenda and Notes July 5, 2022

A packed agenda of important items awaits the Brattleboro Selectboard for their first regular meeting of July. It’s going to be a long meeting.

There will be new liquor licenses, Commonwealtth Dairy wants to nearly double its water and sewer use, rental housing fines will be set, and the board will choose a bridge design for Melrose. There will be a discussion of downtown safety and a new mural for High Street. The board will discuss a woman’s right to choose. There are emergency repairs to authorize.

The firefighters get a “recently concluded additional collective bargaining agreement,” and the Fire Chief would like the board to approve additional funds to meet requirements of becoming a paramedic-level service.

But wait, there’s more!  There will be a first reading of a new ordinance regarding wastewater allocation approvals, there will be a new contract for the Interim Town manager, a new street name will be approved, and the FY23 tax rate will be set.

Bernie: Before Biden Goes to Saudi Arabia, Introduce Your Yemen War Powers Resolution

Despite Pres. Biden’s pledge to “end U.S. support for the disastrous Saudi-led war in Yemen” and treat the Saudi regime as a “pariah,” he plans to go to Saudi Arabia in July amid soaring U.S. gas prices. Through more than 7 years and 3 American presidents, the U.S. continues to enable this humanitarian crisis of staggering proportions, backing the Saudi and UAE regimes’ war on Yemeni civilians. Our Senator Bernie Sanders has been a key leader in multiple attempts by Congress to end our involvement in this catastrophe.

Bernie’s focus is needed in the current drive to get a new Yemen War Powers Resolution (WPR) introduced in the Senate and passed in Congress. If this foreign-imposed hell were happening here, 3.7 million Americans would have perished. Three-fourths of our residents would need food aid; two-thirds would have no access to health care or clean water. Due to Ukraine’s war, “acute hunger in Yemen is expected to increase five-fold,” said the United Nations. On relief and violence-ending efforts for Yemenis: “If we have one message for the world today, it is this: do not stop now.”

Next Stage Bandwagon Summer Series – Ali McGuirk and Michael Roberts

PUTNEY – Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present Vermont-based singer/songwriters Ali McGuirk and Michael Roberts with their bands, as part of the 2022 Next Stage “Bandwagon Summer Series,” on Friday, July 8 at the Retreat Farm in Brattleboro, VT.

With a total of seven Boston Music Award nominations, Ali McGuirk is recognized as one of New England’s most compelling artists.  Blending classic soul power with a folk music lyricism, she captivates audiences with her powerful, sultry voice, heartfelt songwriting, and a style rooted in improvisation.  In 2016, Ali was named by the Boston Globe as an “artist to hear,” along with Lake Street Dive and Haim, and, a year later, her debut album “Slow Burn” made rock critic Steve Morse’s “Top Ten albums of 2017.”  In 2018, she won Boston Music Awards’ “Blues Artist of the Year” and “Live Residency of the Year” for her monthly First Fridays at Bull McCabe’s Pub, and was nominated for New England Music Award’s “R&B Act of the Year.”  Ali’s latest album, penned from her home in Burlington, VT during the pandemic, is scheduled to be released on Signature Sounds Recordings this summer.

Brattleboro Independence Day Closings

In observance of the July 4th holiday, all Town offices will be closed on Monday, July 4, 2022, with the exception of emergency services.

Parking is free at all metered spaces and in the pay-and-display lots on Sunday and Monday, July 3 and July 4, 2022. All other violations will be enforced.

Brooks Memorial Library will be closed on Monday, July 4th, 2022.

Trash, recycling and composting materials are NOT affected by the holiday.

On behalf of the Town of Brattleboro, I am writing to follow up from the meeting on June 6, 2022, regarding EMS Mutual Aid. The Town appreciates the many years of excellent service Rescue Inc. has provided to Brattleboro and wishes continued award-winning success for Rescue Inc.’s service to other communities in our region.  We look forward to rebuilding a healthy working relationship between the two entities towards our shared goal of maintaining the health and safety of the people we serve. 

Below our FY23 service plan is outlined, in hopes that this information will clarify the capacity at which we are asking Rescue Inc. to engage in Mutual Aid.

More Women’s Prisons and Orphanages

July 1, 2042- Twenty years after Roe v. Wade was overturned the Unites States is in the midst of a boom in the construction of women’s prisons as well as a revival of the warehousing of young children in orphanages.

Although the Supreme Court, as well as a majority of states, outlawed abortion women have continued to have the procedure done despite the legal consequences. When the law first changed there was a surge in abortions throughout the U.S. because the mechanisms for punishing those who defied the law were not well established.

As states changed their abortion laws and developed procedures for punishing women who had abortions, as well as those who provided the service, law enforcement agencies began to arrest women, nurses and doctors in numbers that were unanticipated. Thirty five states also passed laws that made it illegal for women to go to a state where abortion is legal if they live in a state banning abortion. The Supreme Court upheld states’ rights to punish women crossing state lines for abortions.

Abortion Discussion Event: Speakers Wanted

SPECIAL PROJECT OPENINGS: BCS will be producing a series of discussions on topical issues. For our part the purpose of the series is civil discussion itself. This event, to be held in September, will be a public discussion of abortion and Proposition 5. We are seeking speakers for both sides: three pro-choice and one pro-life.

Also a stipend is offered for a pregnant woman as an expert or lived-experience witness. BCS prefers to have no moderator, but the exact format of the event will be determined after proposals by the speakers. Since we believe public discourse is the fabric of society we hope the public will witness people disagreeing respectfully on a serious moral issue. This is tantamount for the event and the series.
