Beginning on Wednesday June 13, the Grove ST entrance to the Municipal Center and Vermont State Building will be closed while Utilities crews install a new hydrant in the area. During the closure, there will be signs indicating that traffic can enter the lot from the Linden ST/Main ST end. The project is anticipated to be completed by Friday June 15, including the repaving of ditches.
Elm ST near #15-17 will be closed on Monday, June 11 and Tuesday, June 12 from 6:30 am – approximately 5:00 pm both days while Utilities crews work in the area.
Motorists should plan to use alternate routes during the construction period. Signage will be in place to remind motorists of the road closure.
The Vermont Jazz Center presents Eugene Uman’s Convergence Project on June 9th at 8:00 PM. The Director of the VJC, Uman and uses the Convergence Project as vehicle to present his original compositions and music that has influenced him – it includes Wanda Houston (vocals), Michael Zsoldos, saxophones; Jeff Galindo, trombone; Uman, piano; David Picchi, bass (electric and acoustic) and Jon Fisher on drums. There will also be surprise musical guests performing at this event.
After many musically formative years in Colombia, South America, Uman became drawn to blending the many rhythms of the country, such as cumbia, bambuco and pasillo, with jazz harmonies. While living in Antioquia, the Big Band of Medellín commissioned Uman to write for their 20-piece orchestra, resulting in Blues para Urabá.
Groundworks Collaborative gave the Brattleboro Selectboard a report on the seasonal overflow shelter. They admitted they don’t have the resources to develop a temporary work program, though a new effort by Youth Services might be able to pull it off, perhaps by fall. Youth Services might get a new name, too, but that’s for another time.
The board adopted the FY19 Solid Waste and Parking Budgets, but left some decisions about parking meters, apps, and credit cards for a later discussion. Progress on energy audit matters was detailed, citizens pressed for more to be done, the skatepark is close to the fundraising finish line, grants have been applied for, and citizens were appointed to various Brattleboro committees and boards.

Request for Proposal- Funds available for renewable energy installations in Windham County!
Windham Regional Commission’s Windham County Renewable Energy Program is looking for project proposals of renewable energy installations in Windham County. The projects require a minimum of 50% cash or in kind match. This program has funded 9 projects within Windham County.
Computers, mobile phones, artificial intelligence and communication networks provide many benefits, but they have also raised social and ethical concerns, from Facebook and Cambridge Analytica to the growing impact of automation on people’s jobs and lives.
Ethics and technology is the topic of discussion at the next Brattleboro Area Tech meeting to be held on Thursday, June 14 at 6:00 pm in the Hooker Dunham building at 139 Main Street in Brattleboro. The discussion will be led by Karina Assiter, a professor of computer science at Landmark College.

The idea of writing a book about towns along the southern New England border came while sitting on my deck in Whitingham on a beautiful sunny day. I was looking at a Vermont map and saw all the towns stretching from Brattleboro to Bennington. Why not go to each town, meet the people there and write about my impressions of what I saw and heard and, where possible, have people write their own stories? I interviewed artists, farmers, store owners, entrepreneurs, factory owners and many others.
The Brattleboro VFW located at 40 Black Mountain Road is open to the public for lunch. Lunch is served Mon-Fri from 11:30 – 1:30. Specials listed below are only $6 a plate. Guilford, Vt. – Friends of Music at Guilford (FOMAG) presents its 52nd season finale on Friday, June 8, an annual three-part event dubbed “A Cappella à la Carte.” Set at two neighboring churches in the Algiers village of Guilford, just over a mile south of Exit 1 off I-91, the evening’s menu includes a short meeting, a potluck picnic, and a 7:30 concert of vocal music. Each optional segment is open to the general public; admission to the concert is by donation.
Beginning at 6 p.m. in Christ Church, at the corner of Melendy Hill Rd. and Rt. 5 south, the FOMAG Annual Membership Meeting is typically short and entertaining, and offers a summary of the year, a look ahead to next season, and election of the board of trustees.
After their state-wide resolution was widely approved on March 6 the 350VT central committee endorsed an advisory resolution in Brattleboro. Brattleboro residents should be aware and encourage the selectboard to put implement the popular environmental measure. That is, to make the 350 resolution real by enacting the local follow-up:

The Brattleboro skatepark project will receive $15,000 from the Thomas Thompson Trust, and Brattleboro Goes Fourth will get a permit for a parade at the next regular meeting of the selectboard.
The board will continue with the FY19 parking budget, hear a report from Groundworks Collaborative, review energy efficiency projects and town investments in renewables, and hire a roofer and a tree remover. Grants for child protection services, Bradley House, and intralibrary loans will be discussed, and annual committee appointments and dog warrants will be announced. You can add to the fun by bringing up other items not on the agenda during Public Participation.

Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present contemporary folk and pop singer/songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Seth Glier and Matt Nakoa at Next Stage on Friday, June 8 at 7:30 pm.
Singer, songwriter, pianist, guitarist, producer and Grammy nominee Seth Glier is renowned for his fearless vocal delivery, musical exuberance and seasoned songwriting beyond his years. A troubadour in every sense of the word who averages over 150 live performances annually, 29 year-old Glier has gone from opening act to headlining his own shows and playing major festivals. He’s shared the stage with artists as diverse as James Taylor, Ani DiFranco, Edwin McCain, Martin Sexton, Emmylou Harris and Ryan Adams, and has quickly become known for his passionate live sets and powerful command of both piano and guitar.
The lower end of Cedar Street in Brattleboro will be getting new line striping. The Department of Public Works isn’t just painting over the old lines, though. They’ve marked it out so the driving lanes will shift slightly to allow for wider edges.
The wider area is at the lower end of Cedar Street, and mostly creates a better walking and biking space on the ski jump side of the road.
