Selectboard Meeting Notes – Brattleboro Write-In Procedures Questioned; Body Cams Coming

The Brattleboro Selectboard began discussing a repeal of a 2011 Town Charter change to stop counting local write-in votes unless the write-in candidate had declared an intention to serve. 

The board heard a semi-annual update from the Downtown Brattleboro Alliance, approved of paving, police cars, body cameras for police officiers, and disc golf improvements. Snow sports at Living Memorial Park will continue, we have a new road in town, and new members were appointed to committees.

Fall Hospice Volunteer Training in Townshend

Brattleboro Area Hospice’s fall Hospice Care Volunteer Training will be held at Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend beginning on September 5th and running through November 14th. Classes meet once a week on Wednesdays from 2:30 – 5:30 PM and class size is limited to 12. 

Hospice Volunteers help and support neighbors and their families who are living with life-threatening illnesses throughout Windham County. Help may range from errands and gardening to emotional and physical support.

Bingo for Cancer at VFW

Sunday, August 12th the VFW Post #1034 Auxillary will be hosting their annual bingo for cancer fundraiser. Doors open at 11 A.M., there are no outside food or drinks allowed, but food and drinks will be available for purchase (lunch served at 12. )

Not based on numerology, but based on the new science of nomenology, which I just invented for this posting. And well, maybe he’ll just make a more-than-could-have-been-expected good showing, but let’s think outside the envelope or whatever and give things a shake-up.

OK, so I noticed that this candidate, who is challenging incumbent Windham County Senators in the August 14 Democratic Primary, is named Wayne Vernon Estey. Lot of Waynes out there, but I figure with his middle name being that of one of the towns in the district, that gives him an edge in Vernon.

Siegel=39 in English Reduction (s exception). Governor=39 in Reverse Reduction. Siegel’s slogan is “A Vermont for all of us”=233 in English Ordinal. 233 is the 51st prime number. Governor=51 in English Reduction.

Blending vintage American roots music styles – from country to jazz to rock – Session Americana is a rock band in a tea cup, or possibly a folk band in a whiskey bottle.  This band/collective of talented musicians craft a musical experience unlike any other.

Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes – July 17, 2018

At the next meeting of the Brattleboro Selectboard, the police will ask for approval of a contract for body worn cameras. Axon, of Scottsdale, AZ is the proposed vendor.

The board will buy some police cruisers, hear a semi-annual report from the designated downtown organization, approve of grants for disc golf improvements and paving, review goals, and name a road. They will also begin a discussion election write-in procedures, and more.

As always, you can bring up other items not on the agenda during public participation.

A report released on July 11, by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP) shows that the past three presidents have opted to send a combined $5.1 Trillion in tax cuts mostly to the nation’s richest. (That’s “Trillions” with a “T”.)
At a time when tens of millions of Americans are suffering from deprivation and poverty, the tax cuts rammed through by George W. Bush, extended in part by Barack Obama, and built upon by Trump “have mostly benefited those who are least in need of help.

Twilight on the Tavern Lawn Free Concert Series – The Stockwell Brothers on Sunday, July 15

Twilight Music continues its 16th annual Twilight On The Tavern Lawn series of folk rock, world beat, rock, country, pop, Celtic, blues and bluegrass summer concerts on Sunday, July 15 with contemporary bluegrass and folk music quartet The Stockwell Brothers.  The seven concert series continues every other Sunday through August 26.  All concerts begin at 6:00 pm in downtown Putney on the Putney Tavern lawn (bring a lawn chair or blanket) or at Next Stage at 15 Kimball Hill in case of rain.  The series is sponsored by the Town of Putney, Green Mountain Well, Soundview Paper Company, The Putney Food Co-op, The Stockwell Brothers and many other Putney area businesses and organizations.  The concerts are free to the public (donations are accepted) and food will be available.  For more information, call 802-387-5772 or visit www.twilightmusic.org.

The deadline for filing as an independent candidate for Justice of the Peace is rapidly approaching – Friday, August 17th.  The Town Clerk and current Chairman of the Board of Civil Authority urge you to consider becoming a candidate for Justice of the Peace (JP) on the November ballot.

While a historic back page in the election process and often the subject of humorous anecdote, JPs serve a vital role in the conduct of critical town responsibilities. A JP is a member of the Board of Civil Authority (BCA).  Along with the Selectboard members, and Town Clerk, they function as the Board of Elections by assisting in the maintenance of the voter checklist, determining key issues related to election day and voting, and serve as polling place officials on these days.
