Harris Hill Ski Jumping Weekend

WHAT: This weekend marks the 103rd year of the Harris Hill Ski Jumping competition, the only Olympic sized ski jump in New England, February 14-16, 2025 in Brattleboro, Vermont. The event has a festive atmosphere for the whole family with opening ceremonies, live event announcing, music, local food and drink, a jumbotron and souvenirs. The weekend will serve as a stop on the US Cup competition of the United States American Ski Jumping (USASJ) series.

On Friday, February 14 ♥️, Harris Hill Ski Jump will host a Friday night target jump competition featuring athletes from the weekend’s lineup of competitors. Jumpers aim to land as close as possible to a TSSD Services logo painted on the landing to win a cash prize. The event is FREE and a thank you for the greater Brattleboro community for its continued support of the annual ski jumping event. Live announcing and limited hot drinks will be available for sale for Friday.

Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes – February 18, 2025

The Brattleboro Selectboard will hear about the FY24 audit findings at their next regular meeting. They will also learn that the Western Avenue bridge replacement (good ol’ 54) is back on track with the Town paying a 5% share instead of 10% of engineering and construction costs. Brooks Memorial Library will get a $200,000 rooftop solar system, the board will be told about a video, and will approve historic markers being placed on town properties.

You can bring up other items not on the agenda during public participation. Plus, you can ask questions or comment on any issue on the agenda.

Brattleboro Presidents’ Day Closings

In observance of Presidents’ Day, all Brattleboro Town offices will be closed on Monday, February 17, 2025, with the exception of emergency services.

Parking is free at all metered spaces and in the pay-and-display lots on Sunday and Monday, February 16 and February 17. All other violations will be enforced.

Sons of Town Hall, the transatlantic folk duo of American songwriter/author David Berkeley and British songwriter/producer Ben Parker, is creating an entirely new performance genre. Spring Training for Serious Illness Program Volunteers

BAH is pleased to be offering another volunteer training for the Serious Illness Program. The training will be starting in April with days/times to be determined to allow for maximum flexibility and accessibility.
 
The Serious Illness Program was created to offer support, solace, and assistance to people going through a life-altering serious illness that may or may not carry a terminal prognosis. 
 
This is a wonderful opportunity to spend time with clients who are learning to adapt to the changes a serious illness brings. 

Vermont Slide Guitarist Joel Veena Releases New Album CARDINAL

Joel “Veena” Eisenkramer has released his latest album of original and traditional music played on the 20 stringed Hindustani slide guitar on February 7 on his website, JoelVeena.com, and through Bandcamp. “CARDINAL is a sonic journey I designed to be listened to from beginning to end. I’m inspired by the popular albums of my youth and I think it’s meaningful to try placing traditional music in new contexts that new listeners can relate to.” says Eisenkramer.

Featuring 8 original tracks (plus one bonus track for those who purchase online), CARDINAL is a self-produced labor of love several years in the making. It opens with a sung poem and then launches into Eisenkramer’s original fusion track ´Resistance´, which melds the Indian slide guitar with electronic drums and deep bass. From there, listeners are taken through original music composed within the traditional idiom of North Indian raga progressing towards a full, multiple movement treatment of the traditional evening raga Bageshree. Eventually wrapping up with a Hindi version of the opening poem, composed and performed by Eisenkramer’s spouse, cultural arts curator Vidhi Salla.

Tell us a bit about yourself. Who are you and why are you running for a three-year seat?

Hi, my name is Jill Stahl Tyler.  I decided to run for Selectboard because this is my home.  

When we built our house thirty years ago, we planted trees.  From sapling to towering shade cover, we wanted to see them grow.  Over the same decades, we’ve watched things change in downtown Brattleboro. As the crime situation has worsened, I wondered if we had to leave, and if someone else would enjoy the crisp yellows of the forsythia, the majestic first blooms on the magnolia, and the striking flowering crab apple that now spreads widely near the front patio.

Brattleboro Press Release – Fire at Brookside Drive

At 1725 hrs. on February 6, 2025, the Brattleboro Fire Department was dispatched to 39 Brookside Drive, Apartment #3, for a report of active fire in the unit. The first arriving crew found moderate smoke from the exterior of a 7-unit apartment building. Shortly thereafter, Lieutenant Hubbard reported a fire in an unoccupied unit (apartment #3) with a possible extension into the adjoining unit (apartment #4) and attack space. With this information, the incident was upgraded to a second alarm.

The initial crews located the fire on the second floor of Apartment #3 in the bathroom area. They deployed two 1.75” hose lines to the seat of the fire while a second crew began ensuring all occupants were out of the remaining units. The fire was extinguished quickly, and overhaul and ventilation were performed simultaneously.

My name is Jane Wheeler and I am running for RTM in District 8. I was born, grew up and worked in Brattleboro.  Outside of about 8 years when I lived in close by towns I have always lived in Brattleboro.  I have had many lived experiences in Brattleboro- school kid, factory worker, drunk, recovering alcoholic, renter and now a property owner, addictions counselor, houseparent at Kurn Hattin,  co-founder of the VT Counsel on Problem Gambling, case manger for Senior Solutions, resource advocate at Grace Cottage Hospital, caregiver for aging family members, and now as a retired older person.  I have a master’s degree with the focus in counseling psychology. Informal education includes matriarchal studies and plant medicine.

Brattleboro Weather Related Meeting Cancellations

Due to the inclement weather the Brattleboro Tree Advisory Board meeting scheduled for this afternoon is cancelled. It has been rescheduled for February 13, 2025.

Due to the inclement weather The Charter Revision Commission’s event at the Brooks Memorial Library, scheduled for 6:00pm today, has been cancelled. A makeup date will be determined later this week or early next.

Sports – A Healthy Refuge

If there was ever a time when we needed a refuge from the madness of the world it is now. Many of us are finding are own personal refuges and one of mine is sports. It doesn’t matter whether you are a participant or a spectator/fan because once you are immersed in any kind of sporting experience it is easy to forget about the rest of the world for a time. Reminiscing about your own personal sports history also has value.

My favorite sports are baseball and basketball. I have never been a football fan and I attribute that to the fact that my high school didn’t have a football team. I was the team manager for most of the sports at my high school, sort of a combination mascot and all around errand boy for the coach and players.

Our soccer team was one of the best in the state. A lot of that had to do with the fact that all the other teams we played had their best athletes on their football teams. All the big guys that usually don’t play soccer were on our team and we literally trampled most of the other teams.
