A central aspect of being a surfer is getting innundated with weather reports. If ever a group had its eyes on big storms and ’watershed events’ it’s the children of waves.  And the buzz now is zonkers over superstorm Nuri in the Northern Pacific. Nuri’s impact as a typhoon is starting to lessen, but nonetheless the Explosive Cyclogenesis (aka weather bomb) is charted as the most powerful event of its kind, ever.

Nuri began as a low pressure incident just off Guam a few days before Halloween, now over Alaska, soon to wreak its wreckage over the lower 48.

BURLINGTON, Vt., Nov. 10 – Welcoming President Barack Obama’s support for net neutrality, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today urged the Federal Communications Commission to protect free and open access to the Internet.

In a l, Sanders said the commission should act decisively. “As you know, President Barack Obama has made a strong statement on net neutrality and the importance of preserving a free and open Internet. I strongly agree with him and so do the American people,” Sanders wrote to Wheeler.

I found a little lady bug and didn’t have the heart to put it out in the cold, what with the weather going below freezing at night. So, I looked up ladybugs on the internet and found you can keep one as a pet.  I took in a green pumpkin that had never ripened and followed instructions to care for it.  Just a paper towel around the stem, a few drops of water a day on the paper towel so the lady bug can suck the water out, and a drop of honey a day for food.  I’ve had my pet lady bug for about 10 days now, she did leave for 2 days, then returned to her green pumpkin. 

Tickets For The Nutcracker At NEYT Go On Sale November 17

Company of Muses has announced tickets for the 2014 Brattleboro School of Dance production of The Nutcracker will go on sale Monday, November 17.

Show times for this year’s run of the holiday classic are 7:00pm on Friday and Saturday, December 19-20, and then matinees at 1:00pm and 5:00pm on Sunday, December 21. All performances will take place at the New England Youth Theatre, located at 100 Flat Street in Brattleboro.

Tickets can be purchased online through BrattleboroSchoolofDance.com or by visiting the studio, located at 22 High Street in downtown Brattleboro, on Saturdays between 11:00am to 3:00pm. The studio will not be open on Saturday, November 29, due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

LIBRARY RAFFLE: HAND CRAFTED COLONIAL BOOKCASE

The Friends of Brooks Memorial Library have announced that they will hold a raffle for a locally designed and built Colonial design pine bookcase.  Tickets for the raffle will be available at the Brooks Memorial Library from Monday, November 10 through Saturday, December 13. 

Donated to the Friends by a local craftsman, Paul Rodrigue, this bookcase is handmade of pine cut from nearby Alstead, New Hampshire. The bookcase is 44 inches tall and 24 inches wide.  The traditional dovetail joints are all hand cut.

The Reasons Why I Hope Scott Milne Will Ask For A Full Re-Count of the 2014 Vermont Vote For Governor

Heres’  why I  think Scott Milne should demand a re-count of the 2014 Election Results; and I’d like to see  a total forensic exam of all the results, not just the Governor’s race, but the majority of people in Vermont are just concerned with the outcome of the Governor’s race.

The Vermont vote totals reported at 100%  show 193,087 votes for all votes for Governor candidates, and 191,504 for all votes for Representative to Congress candidates. The difference is 193,087 – (minus) 191,504 = (equals) 1,583 fewer people seem to have voted for the first item on the ballot.

I can’t believe my eyes!  They have done it again!  In 2010 it was clear as a bell, they had an “unoffical” vote count, and then on the “official” vote count that followed, they cut my votes for Governor and for U.S. Senate right in half.

This time, The results  of total votes at 96.365 counted were for me, Cris Ericson for U.S. Congress 3,605 votes at 1.89%.  Today at 100% of the votes counted, my votes have been reduced to 2,750 at 1.44% coming in 3rd out of 6 candidates.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the Village was considered the northern extreme of the city. By the time of the Civil War, stables on Christopher Street rented horse carriages for city folk to get away from it all, driving into the countryside above 11th Street. Free from the constraints of city life, Villagers thrived on their rural feeling of independence. Thomas Paine chose to live in a wood frame ‘country house’ at Bleecker and Christopher Streets rather than the congested lower Manhattan.

In 1810, when architect John Randel was assigned to lay out the expanding city streets in grid formation, Villagers resisted his gridiron plans in favor of the quaint, narrow, odd and disjointed layout of streets that infused this colorful neighborhood so unique to the city.

I’ve heard the album of this performance, but had never heard the complete introduction, in which we learn that Bob “Newlywed Game” Eubanks was one of the people who helped pay to bring the Beatles to the bowl.

Brattleboro Fire Department: Dispose of Wood Ashes Properly

Over the past five days the Brattleboro Fire Department has responded to two (2) fires that have been caused by the improper disposal of wood ashes.

As we move into the heating season, the use of wood stoves, fire places and pellet stoves will be on the increase. The Brattleboro Fire Department would like to remind all residents that even though wood ashes may seem to be cooled, it is common that they retain enough heat to ignite other combustible materials for several days. Residents are asked to review and follow these easy guidelines;

Dispose of wood ashes in a metal container that can be tightly closed, douse with water, place the closed container outside your home away from combustible materials and leave in the container for several days before disposing of them.

How do you raise campaign funds?  If you are an  attorney or lawyer, this is what you need to learn before contacting the candidate. Remember, they didn’t teach you everything in law school.

Sanders Proposes ‘Democracy Day’ Legislation Calls for Election Day Holiday

BURLINGTON, Vt., Nov. 7 – After Tuesday’s extremely low voter turnout, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) announced today that he will introduce to make Election Day a national holiday.

“In America, we should be celebrating our democracy and doing everything possible to make it easier for people to participate in the political process. Election Day should be a national holiday so that everyone has the time and opportunity to vote. While this would not be a cure-all, it would indicate a national commitment to create a more vibrant democracy,” said Sanders, who was not on the ballot on Tuesday.

Having witnessed the student riots in France in 1968, Delevingne began photographing non-violent protests around the world. After settling in Montague, Massachusetts, the epicenter of New England activism, Delevingne began photographing the protests of the local power plants, including Vermont Yankee and Seabrook. Earlier this year he traveled to Fukushima, Japan.
