In our latest episode, the election year continues to astound and amaze. Despite some political poker faces and a bit of bluffing, no one yet has a winning hand. About the only thing that can be said with certainty is that no one will really know for some time to come. This will cause heart palpitations for some, but for the rest, it provides us with more time and space for armchair political commentary.
Brattleboro Community Television (BCTV), the community media center serving southern Windham County, will offer small group classes with hands-on experience in video production this spring.

I asked Town Clerk Annette Cappy about some of the lingering questions regarding recount and revotes.
– Are we satisfied with the most recent recount numbers?
Annette Cappy, Brattleboro Town Clerk: I am. The second recount mirrored the election results exactly for both David Gartenstein and Avery Schwenk. Dick DeGray picked up 2 votes. Those results seem very reasonable. Using the tabulators doesn’t necessarily ensure 100% accuracy. There is always a slim margin of error whether using tabulators or counting by hand, which is why the process of recounts is included in the statutes.

Sometimes at meetings about something really important like chemtrails, I get kinda wound up when I realize the attendees know almost zilch about the subject. You’d think that people would look up at the sky now and then wouldn’t you? Thanks to Post Oil for getting the conversation started.
James Hansen just published a climate study that says we’re in for a lashing from climate change much worse than scientists have previously predicted. It makes me restless listening to people thinking that writing to their Congresscritters or holding a petition is going to yield results. How many petitions are going on? Do we see anything getting better come out of them? Maybe the occasional bone is thrown in order to shut us up or give some evidence that the system is working.

WKVT radio presents a live broadcast of a public forum about mental health needs and services in the community, from 10:00am to 12:00noon on Thursday, March 31 in the Brooks Memorial Library Meeting Room.
Much like the 2014 “Call to Action” program that addressed opiate abuse, WKVT hosts Peter “Fish” Case and Chris Lenois will moderate a guest panel consisting of state and local officials involved in policy-making, treatment, and emergency response, as well as impacted individuals and families.
“There is a similar level of urgency around mental health issues as there is around addiction in Windham County and the surrounding area,” says Case. “We hope to connect those people who are facing the same challenges with those who are working on solutions, so the community has a better understanding of the available resources.”
On March 26th at 8:00 PM, the Vermont Jazz Center will present a listening experience that will appeal to lovers of both classical and jazz music. Saxophonist Michael Zsoldos will pay tribute to one of the jazz lineage’s top tenor saxophonists Ben Webster. For this concert his jazz quartet will be augmented by a string quartet. Together they will perform an evening of music that Zsoldos transcribed from two recordings released by Webster in 1954: “Music for Loving” and “The Warm Moods.” Zsoldos will be joined by Miro Sprague (piano), Dave Clark (acoustic bass) and Tim Gilmore (drums). The jazz quartet will be complemented by string players Alicia Casey, Ben Van Vliet (violins), Marcia Cassidy (viola) and Ben Kulp (cello).

There will be two Shabbat morning (shacharit/Torah) services this month, at 10:00 on April 2nd, led by Cantor Kate Judd, and on the 9th, led by a guest leader. Morning services are followed by a light kiddush snack and time for shmoozing.
There will be a Yizkor service on the last night of Passover, April 29th, at 6:30, the third of the four required Yizkor services in the Jewish calendar–the special memorial prayer recited by all those who have lost a parent or a close loved one. A minyan is needed for the service, which will be quite brief. Please come for Yizkor, then stay, if you wish,for a musical Kabbalat Shabbat and dessert potluck (no chometz, please!).
Come join us on Sunday afternoon, April 10th, from 1:00-3:00 pm, to craft items for the homeless population in the area. Using traditional crafts, we will make hats, scarves, blankets and sleeping mats from yarn and fleece fabric.

Gnosticism is the shared root of Jewish, Christian and other ancient Mediterranean faiths and cultures. But just what exactly is shared between these various religions? What is Gnosticism? How is it embedded in Jewish text, life and practice today? During our afternoon with Rabbi Andrea, we will explore the core concepts of the Jewish mystical tradition and its Gnostic roots. We will ask what the core insights of this tradition are, and how it is reflected today in our communities. As these principles draw us into a deeper understanding of our own beliefs and practices, we will also gain the ability to have meaningful interfaith dialogue with others.
Anybody know what happened to the tree in the Crowell Lot around 3/17? Lightning? Wind? I think D&E Tree was on the scene to clean up the body. The kids just got a new piece of playground equipment – 2 tree stumps. While I’m at the Crowell Lot, has anyone noticed the basketball stuck in the tree about 50 feet up?
In a stealth vote in the final moments of Representative Town Meeting today, fairly new RTM member Dylan Mackinnon of District Two proposed the following non-binding resolution:
“I move that the town change, in reference to the second Monday in October, as Indigenous People’s Day in place of Columbus Day.”
K. Daims attempted an amendment to have the Selectboard bring this proposal to a town-wide resolution, but the amendment was defeated 28 to 43. The proposal passed overwhelmingly, though the exact vote was obscured by a vast WHOOSH! of indigenous spirits flooding the room with silent whoops and hollars.

The Brattleboro Area Jewish Community (BAJC) marks the holiday of Purim this year with “Purimpalooza,” a costume party open to everyone, starring jazz vocalist extraordinaire Wanda Houston and Brattleboro’s own jazz master pianist Eugene Uman, along with several other local performers, at 7:00-10:30 PM at the Vermont Jazz Center in Brattleboro, VT.
