A Saudi panel of scientists recently concluded that women aren’t just household items as it was previously
thought, but are mammals and therefore should have same rights as camels and goats.
Previously, women had the same rights as a chair or a table and were seen more as individual property.

Curly Haugland, a Republican National Committee member, says the nomination process is pretty straightforward: The party, not the voters, chooses the nominee.In an appearance on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Wednesday morning, Haugland, a North Dakotan and current member of the RNC’s Rules Committee, said that any assumption otherwise is misguided.
“That’s the problem: The media has created the perception that the voters will decide the nomination,” he said. He went on: “Political parties choose their nominee, not the general public, contrary to popular belief.”
Technically, this is true. The nomination is decided by delegates to this summer’s convention, not directly by voters. But it’s probably not a terribly helpful argument to make at a time when Republican establishment types are openly talking about wresting the GOP nomination from Donald Trump at the convention. Trump has said doing so could lead to “riots.”

Our neighborhood in Guilford is beyond the terminus for cable, so we use Fairpoint DSL, which is, let’s say: better than dial-up. It looks as though a newish company called VTel is promoting itself as intending to cover all of Vermont with good broadband, via, as I understand it, a combination of fiber-optic and some wireless technology. They may be making progress on reaching our area. So I’m asking if anyone knows about them, or, possibly, uses their services? There have been some similar-sounding schemes lately that haven’t turned out well (see the Great Auk story in today’s Reformer.)

The Windham Regional Woodlands Association (WRWA) is currently seeking prospective or current students interested in Natural Resource Management to apply for scholarships for the Fall 2016 and Spring 2017 semesters. Up to three $1500 scholarships will be awarded ($750 per semester) to Windham County Residents who attend two or four year college programs in Natural Resource, Forest Management or related majors. The deadline for applying is May 15th for the Fall 2016 semester.

Brooks Memorial Library continues its Vermont Humanities Council reading/discussion series, Mexican Americans: Experience and Identity on Wednesday 16 March 2016, at 7 pm – 8:30 pm with The Tortilla Curtain by T.C. Boyle. This 4-Part series ‘Mexican Americans: Experience and Identity,’ deals with the experiences of Mexicans living in the United States, from the struggles of migrant farmworkers and day laborers in California to coming of age stories of Chicanos as U.S. citizens.
The third book in this series is The Tortilla Curtain by T.C. Boyle, which is story of illegal aliens in California, told through the eyes of two very different couples, one well-off Anglos, the other illegal Mexicans living in a canyon. The novel chronicles their relationship against the background of growing hostility between immigrants and natives.
Very early in his campaign, around the time he declared it back in mid-May, I wrote to Bernie and said “Avalanches don’t only start with a thunderclap or a gunshot … sometimes they start with a little tiny snowball that starts to form at the very top of the mountain.”The Bernie Sanders avalanche is about halfway down the mountain now, and the few little snowballs, which became many, are just starting to morph into a tremendous cascade.
