The board of Building a Better Brattleboro is proceeding with a request-for-proposals process for the River Garden without holding meetings for public input. “It’s time for Brattleboro to cut its losses and move on,” writes the Reformer editorial board with respect to the River Garden, urging the town to “figure out a way to add the River Garden back to its grand list and move on.”

Parenting does not come with a handbook but Parenting Teens Wisely does. In an effort to promote positive communications between parents, caregivers and teens, the Brattleboro Area Prevention
Coalition (BAPC) is offering the Parenting Teens Wisely workshop, on Tuesday, April 9 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm at the Putney Central School Library.

This free three hour workshop teaches parents skills and techniques to help them better understand and deal with children ages 10-19. Participants will learn how to problem-solve and encourage cooperation with their teen and learn to develop fair and effective discipline skills. 

Finalists Are Announced in Stroll Business Plan Competition

Finalists have been selected in the 2013 Strolling of the Heifers Vermont Business Plan Competition, which offers a total of $60,000 in prizes.

The 14 finalists, chosen by a statewide panel of judges, were chosen on the basis of business prospectuses submitted during the first phase of the contest. They will now prepare detailed business plans and will make presentations at the final judging session on June 5.

The competition is a collaboration of Strolling of the Heifers, a Brattleboro-based local foods advocacy organization, and Vermont Technical College, with additional partnership contributions by Vermont Small Business Development Center, Southern Vermont Community Action, and Vermont Interactive Television.

Women have spied for a long time, and they’ve been good at it. They’ve dashed through enemy lines, sent secret messages under the nose of the enemy, and led prisoners in daring and dangerous escapes.  They went undercover, taking on new identities varying from apple sellers to crazy neighbors to stage dancers.  Often, it was enough of a disguise for women to just be themselves.  People didn’t expect them to have the strength or know-how to be spies.  Those people were wrong.

At the first meeting of the new Brattleboro Selectboard, the board will again take up the issue of a new state law allowing beer and wine at gallery events. They’ll also discuss a proposal to purchase solar energy from ISA Solar and Green Lantern Capital from a site to be determined.

They will also hear from new owners of Elliot Street Fish, Chips and More, appoint members to the Police Fire Facility Project oversight committee, consider skating rink repairs, set board goals, and review their rules of conduct. All this and more, and you can watch on TV or attend in person.

On a Saturday morning at 6:45 a.m. there was a loud and persistent knock at my front door. It was a police officer, who was there to serve a no trespass order which had been filed maliciously as retaliation by an irresponsible individual whom I had had to evict from a property I own. (He has been caretaking the property rent free, and it is not his residence.)

When I came to the door to find out who was banging so loud, there was a tense moment during which I felt threatened not knowing who it could be, and tense because the officer did not know whether he was about to be confronted by a dangerous person.

Stroll’s Quiche Competition to Showcase Fresh, Local Ingredients

Strolling of the Heifers announces its 2013 keynote culinary event: The Great New England Quiche Cookoff.

Quiche is defined as a baked, open-faced savory tart, comprised of a crust filled with a mixture of eggs, cream, cheese and a variety of other ingredients.

This year’s event will showcase quiche as an easy meal.  For presentation to the judges and exhibition to the public, entries will be paired with a slice of buttered bread and a salad of dressed, local greens, all donated by sponsors.
“Strolling of the Heifers helps the public understand where their food comes from.  Sustainable, local food is not just healthy and delicious, but it is also easy to use to provide meals for our families. Can anyone help me solve this horrible problem? I have a laptop (HP) 5 years old. I recently noticed on the bottom right of the screen where it used to say “windows 7”, that it suddenly read :

So here’s my idiot of the century mistake explained;

My curiosity led to one thing after another and I found myself at a tech blog trying to understand what may have happened to create this change. I never did find out because I went only so far before reading some instructions on how to remove that message which required downloading a program .. Said to be from Microsoft.. Called “fix it”.

Carpet Sweeper Saves The Day

The solution to our ongoing problem — how to keep the carpets clean without scaring the cat — turned out to be a carpet sweeper.  Back in the day, my grandmother had one of these things.  Every afternoon, when the house was clear of grandchildren and other people, she would say “I’m going to pass the carpet sweeper.”  And then out would come the magical implement, and in a few minutes, all the dirt on the living room floor was gone. 

Sanders Bill Would Break Up Big Banks

BURLINGTON, Vt., March 27 – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said today he will introduce legislation to break up banks that have grown so big that the Justice Department has not pursued prosecutions for fear an indictment would harm the financial system.

The 10 largest banks in the United States are bigger now than before a taxpayer bailout following the 2008 financial crisis. At the time Congress, over Sanders’ objection, approved a $700 billion bank rescue because of concerns by some that the financial institutions were too big to fail. Another $16 trillion from the Federal Reserve propped up financial institutions.
