Weekend Concert – Aerosmith

This week’s concert is Aerosmith live in Houston on June 24, 1977, a few years prior to their need to “come back” with Run DMC in the 1980’s.

Are they New England’s best rock band? Are they America’s best rock band?

Selectboard Meeting Notes: Solar Farming, Quick Fix for Brattleboro Rink

At Tuesday’s long meeting of the Brattleboro Selectboard the new solar farm was explained in detail and public support for the project appears to be substantial. The board also approved a “quick fix” approach to ice rink repairs in order to be able to open the season on schedule. It also gives them more time to consider long-term options for the facility.

The Fire Department presented an overview of their operations, a store on Guilford Road was again denied a liquor permit, tax rates were set, Patrick Moreland was named the interim Town Manager when Barb Sondag officially resigns, and much more was packed into the over three hour meeting.

Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes – July 2, 2013

The Brattleboro Selectboard would like to know what you think about the proposed solar farm along I-91. They’ve carved out time during Tuesday’s meeting to listen to your ideas.

If you go, you’ll also be able to participate in discussions of the skating rink compressor, local hiring, the town website, the Town Manager search process, various grants and permits, and other issues.

The proceedings are broadcast and streamed by BCTV, and you can read a wrap-up here the day after.

Miniatures and Models Added at the Brattleboro History Center

If you like miniatures and models, the Brattleboro History Center has a few new items you might want to see next time you come downtown.

Recent additions to the History Center include a large, colorful model of Ft. Dummer, a beautiful scale model of the covered bridge to Dummerston over the West River, and an HO scale model of the Newfane station and railroad buildings of the West River Railroad.

Flood Watch in Effect for Windham County

There’s a flood watch in effect for Windham County for most of the day, and a showing every day now through Independence Day next Thursday. A very wet week.

The Windham County Sheriff’s Department posted this photo of the Whetstone this morning:

NSA Spying Not About Safety

NSA whistleblower Russel Tice has told reporters examples of people the NSA was spying on prior to the PRISM program. Tice says these people were targeted for blackmail and other leverage over them.

:

  • “Members of Congress, both Senate and the House, especially on the intelligence committees and on the armed services committees and some of the–and judicial”
  • “One of the judges is now sitting on the Supreme Court”
  • “Two … former FISA court judges”

Power Out in Dummerston

The power at our world headquarters on Cedar Street was knocked out for a short while today, but a problem said to be at the Dummerston substation has kept over 1,700 without power in Dummerston this afternoon. Green Mountain Power has the outage listed and is working on restoration of services.

Weekend Concert Series – Beastie Boys

This week we have an important addition to the history of concert films. Beastie Boys “Awesome I F*ckin’ Shot That” is a concert film that was filmed by members of the audience. Cameras were given out before the show to people in all parts of the room, from the good seats back to the nosebleed rows.

The instructions were simple – just keep filming. It was up to those with the cameras to decide where to point them.

The show you see here is the edited-together results from the October 9, 2004 show at Madison Square Garden in NYC.

Donna Macomber Joins Brattleboro Selectboard

Donna Macomber was unanimously selected to fill the vacancy on the Brattleboro Selectboard at a special meeting Thursday evening.

She and Michael Bosworth were nominated after being interviewed; Ian Kiehle and Steve Cormier were not nominated. Kate O’Connor thanked all who applied. “We were really lucky to have four really good people interested.”

During her interview Macomber said she hoped to bring energy and excitement to the board, as well as humility, emotional intelligence, a “beginner’s mind,” and an ability to make decisions.

Brattleboro Selectboard Vacancy – Interviews

BCTV had live coverage of the interviews to fill the vacancy on the Brattleboro Selectboard.

Update: It’s over now. They reconvene at 6:30 pm to make their decision.

Good answers from candidates Michael Bosworth, Steve Cormier, Ian Kiehle, and Donna Macomber.

Selectboard Meeting Notes: Town Manager Resigns, 8,000 Solar Panel Farm Planned Near I-91

The Brattleboro Selectboard bid farewell to Ken Schneck, whose resignation is effective this week, but in a surprise announcement it was learned that Town Manager Barb Sondag will be resigning as well.  Sondag said that she’ll be taking a position in Missouri to be closer to family, and so the board must find a replacement.

The Brooks House’s complex funding may be in place by next week, with construction beginning in late July. Skating rink repairs have been put on ice until the board’s next meeting. And the public is invited to comment on a proposal to put 8,000 solar panels near the Holiday Inn, viewable from I-91.

And much, much more. Read on for the details.

Rep Alan Grayson (D – FL) on US Surveillance

I got to watch a fair amount of CSPAN last week as I recovered from a flu. One of the more interesting moments came late in the week, after most of the work for the week was through and members could use their time to talk about anything they wanted.

Rep. Grayson, a lawyer and a former phone company president, decided to spend about a half an hour talking about PRISM, phone records, metadata, and government spying on US citizens. It’s a pretty good overview of the known programs, and he offers up some good points of further inquiry.

Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes – June 18, 2013

Overpriced ice rink compressors will be a topic of conversation at the next regular Tuesday meeting of the Brattleboro Selectboard. The single bid received for fixing the ice rink came in more than $100,000 over what was anticipated to be a $364,000 project, and the Town can’t afford a $471,000 price tag, says the Finance Director.

The Town also plans to purchase a new dump truck and brush chipper, BaBB will give the board a status update, Brooks House owners Mesabi, Inc. will return to ask for an additional $50,000 in loans from the Town of Brattleboro, and much more. Tune in to watch on BCTV, attend in person at the Municipal Center, and read full coverage here the day after.

Weekend Concert: Singles Weekend

Everybody wiped out this week and no one was able to come up with a concert to share.

So, instead of full concerts, you are invited to share the equivalent of a video single. It can be an official video for a song you like, or a something that isn’t quite a full concert, but worth noting. (Save the full concerts for other weeks.)

You Are Suspicious – Domestic Surveillance of Americans

Many people suspected it, but now it is known for certain. The US government is spying on Americans, collecting vast amounts of electronic information to sort and store, and has been doing so for the last seven years.

have the stories, and more reports are said to be on the way.

Edward Snowden was working at a high level for NSA contractor Booz Allen Hamilton and was able to see how the various spying systems scoop up emails, phone records, locations, durations, chats, and almost anything you do online. This information is combined with other available information to create profiles of each of us. Snowden has documentation to prove it, and shared it with Greenwald.

Selectboard Meeting Notes: Should Non-Payers of Property Tax Contribute Anyway?

The Brattleboro Selectboard chose an architectural engineering firm for the Police Fire Facility project at their Tuesday meeting. The board also started a discussion about asking property owners with tax exemptions to pay something anyway for the services they receive.

Arkham fought for and received their outdoor consumption permit, the Town got a clean bill of health from auditors, the Grand List is up, and an upcoming Selectboard vacancy was officially announced. Read on for details.
