Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda & Notes – December 1, 2015

Ready to go to every other week garbage collection? How about single stream recycling? The Brattleboro Selectboard will take up these and other waste-y issues at their regular Tuesday meeting on Dec. 1.

Tax stabilization, loans, and land transactions with BDCC and G.S. Precision will be discussed and approved, the DPW will buys some vehicles, Elliot Street bridge repairs will be discussed, and more. Watch on BCTV or attend in person, and read about it here after the meeting.

Brattleboro Selectboard Schedules Two More Police Fire Info Sessions

The Brattleboro Selectboard will hold a special meeting and public information session on Monday, November 30, 2015 at 6:00pm in the Academy School gymnasium. This is the second of three public information meetings to present information and hear public comment about the proposed alternatives for the Police-Fire Facilities Project. This meeting will be taped and rebroadcast by BCTV. ASL interpreters will be available for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community members.

Brattleboro Selectboard Special Meeting Notes – FY17 Departments and Police-Fire Update

Brattleboro Selectboard Chair David Gartenstein wished everyone a happy, good,and safe Thanksgiving at the start of the board’s Tuesday night special meeting.

Police Fire Facilities

Gartenstein announced that they would be putting the Police and Fire Facilities Project on every agenda in the foreseeable future, to give time for updates, questions, and special topics of discussion. He named four issues for the board to consider at upcoming meetings: how funding the project relates to the general fund budget, how the project fits with our long-term capital needs, how moving the police to Putney Road would impact the use of the Municipal Center,  and the public impact and public good of moving police to Putney Road.

. I have always been a keen supporter of the movement. I joined two Wall St local groups and an offshoot work group of one of them and the movement is dear to my heart. However, I think it’s futile this idea of demonstrating. It merely keeps us in the position of hamsters on the wheel. As long as we supplicate anyone or any entity, we are essentially saying that we need permission.

New December Exhibits: Josh Bernbaum and Jim Giddings at MGFA

On Thursday, December 3 from 5-7pm at Mitchell • Giddings Fine Arts, 183 Main Street, Brattleboro, the public is invited to an opening reception for two new solo exhibitions.Glass artist Josh Bernbaum, and painter and gallery co-owner Jim Giddings, will be showing new work in two separate solo exhibits. Both exhibits will be on display through January 3, 2016. A combined artist talk is scheduled for Friday, December 11 at 7pm.

Giddings’ work is as much about scraping off paint as it is applying it, “By selectively leaving some paint and scraping or rubbing away other areas, I can retrieve the white paper surface and a lightness of feeling not unlike a successful watercolor. Then I add more paint, then remove, then add…. I’m trying to have it both ways: depth and richness of oil paint and watercolor-like delicacy.”

On Saturday, November 21, Brattleboro’s American Legion Post 5 will honor local soldiers killed in action during the Vietnam War.

A ceremony, at the post home on Linden Street, will include students from Brattleboro Union High School reading the names and a brief biography of each of the 11 men, followed by a brief address by Dr. Robert Tortolani, a combat battalion surgeon during the Vietnam War.

The soldier biographies, along with family photos, will be posted on the Brattleboro Historical Society website, in succession, in the days leading up to the November 21 event.

Today we remember SP4 William Wayne O’Neil.

Brattleboro Area Hospice to Host Death Café in Putney

On Tuesday, December 8th from 4:00 – 5:30 PM, Brattleboro Area Hospice will host a Death Café at Katy’s Restaurant, 118 Main St. in downtown Putney. This free event is part of an international movement begun in Europe (www.deathcafe.com ), and is dedicated to taking death out of the closet in order to discuss it publicly.

Previous events that have taken place throughout Windham County have been met with tremendous praise. People have reported them as comfortable, supporting a full range of emotions – from tears to raucous laughter, easier than anticipated, energy charged, inspirational and fun.

Holiday Grief Support Gathering

On Thursday, December 3rd, from 5:30-6:30 pm Brattleboro Area Hospice Bereavement Support staff will offer a gathering for those experiencing feelings of loss.

Please join us at the Brattleboro Area Hospice office, 191 Canal St. in Brattleboro for a special time to gather with others who are grieving to talk about challenges of and strategies for grieving during the holiday season. BAH Bereavement Counselors Connie Baxter and Cheryl Richards will provide the hospitality and gentle guidance for the conversation. Give yourself the gift of support for this potentially difficult season. There is no charge for this event. An Evening of Entertainment with the Bluebird Theater

The first half of the evening will feature The Bluebird Orchestra playing some of their original songs and improvising music to two very short silent films: “Princess Nicotine” and “Artistic Creation” from the turn of the (last) century.

Brattleboro Thanksgiving Closings

In observance of the Thanksgiving holiday, all Brattleboro Town offices will be closed on Thursday and Friday, November 26 and 27, 2015, with the exception of emergency services.

Brooks Memorial Library will close at 6:00pm on Wednesday, November 25, and will be closed on Thursday, November 26. It will be open for regular hours on Friday and Saturday, November 27 and 28.

I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project Update: Week of November 22

To reduce congestion on I-91, both Exit 3 on ramps will be closed on Sunday, November 29 (Thanksgiving weekend) from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. I-91 will remain open.

To reduce congestion on I-91, both Exit 3 on ramps will be closed on Sunday, November 29 (Thanksgiving weekend) from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. I-91 will remain open.

Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge. The new bridge will be 104’ wide and is designed to carry all four lanes of traffic –two northbound and two southbound.

The Middle East has been America’s military playground for over 30 years. Starting with the first Gulf War, the US has gone beyond the installation of dictatorial puppets and into the realm of constant warfare, with drone strikes only a part of our present involvement in that region. Up until now, not much of this has touched the average American, who lives thousands of miles away from the carnage. Unless you or a someone you knew was in the military and deployed there, it didn’t feel real. Or at least it didn’t, until recently. Paris changed all that. Suddenly, the battlefield was no longer just the Middle East, where we could safely ignore it, but potentially here, where we live.

The time banking model allows for the exchange of time credits, a type of community currency that anyone can earn by helping another member of the Time Trade. Each hour of service provided to another Time Trade member earns one Time Credit. You can spend your time credits on services provided by any of the other members of the Time Trade.

All services are valued equally, regardless of the market value. For example, a web designer’s hour is worth the same as an hour spent helping someone weed their garden or an hour spent preparing a meal for someone. One hour = One hour.
