Fantastic Wantastiquet – A Multi-Disciplinary Fall Foliage Arts Festival

I am proposing a multi-disciplinary arts and cultural festival to take place annually in and around Brattleboro during the ‘fall foliage’ season. In practical terms this will mean from the beginning of September through the week following Columbus Day.

Here are some thoughts about the Festival which I have recently put into writing. Please note that one of the functions of the festival is to focus extraordinary funding for the arts into that season or window of time.                                            [Photograph by William Hays]

I am seeking individuals who may be interested in serving on the founding Board of Fantastic Wantastiquet. This will be a non-profit organization, will seek funding through grants and charitable donations, and will distribute grants whose arts & cultural work projects contribute to the local economy and to the themes and purposes of the Festival.

Slow Medicine Discussion at the River Garden

Michael Finkelstein, MD, also known as the “Slow Medicine Doctor,” will present his approach to healthy living at the Robert H. Gibson River Garden in downtown Brattleboro on Thursday, April 30 at 6:30 p.m.

The session, entitled “Slow Living is Healthy Living,” is sponsored by Strolling of the Heifers. Finkelstein will be joined by Orly Munzing, founder and executive director of Strolling of the Heifers, and Linda McInerney, founder and artistic director of Old Deerfield Productions.

Finkelstein teaches that most health challenges are the result of an imbalance in our bodies and lives, and that most quick-fix solutions actually exacerbate these imbalances.

Mr. G’s “Final Markdown” Closed

Mr. G’s “Final Markdown” store in West Brattleboro has closed.  A note on the door says that the West Brattleboro store ceased operating on April 12, but that other store locations are still open.  The Mr. G’s in North Walpole, NH is probably the closest to Brattleboro.

Strolling of the Heifers Sets Theme, Seeks Parade Units, Volunteers

Strolling of the Heifers has announced its 2015 theme: “Love Your Farmer.”

The annual Strolling of the Heifers Parade takes place on Saturday, June 6 at 10 a.m. It is the centerpiece of a weekend full of events including a Friday, June 5 evening street festival, the 11-acre Slow Living Expo on parade day, and on Sunday, June 7, the Tour de Heifer dirt-road cycling rides, a Farmers Breakfast at The Marina, and a Farm Tour. 

The mission of Strolling of the Heifers is “connecting people with healthy local food, encouraging and facilitating innovation and entrepreneurship in the farm/food sector, and supporting the development of stronger local food systems and healthy, sharing, connected and resilient communities.”

Founder and executive director Orly Munzing said, “We’ve grown from a small-town parade and festival into an organization that has a year-round set of programs related to that mission. But if you take away everything else, it all comes down to just those three words, ‘Love Your Farmer.’”

Sanders, Labor Leaders to Protest Disastrous Trade Deal

WASHINGTON, April 20 – Protesting a trade deal that would throw Americans out of work, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today planned to march with leaders of the AFL-CIO and other labor organizations to a rally outside the U.S. trade representative’s office.

“One of the key reasons why the middle class in America continues to decline and the gap between the very rich and everyone else is growing wider is because of disastrous trade agreements which have sent millions of decent-paying jobs to China and other low-wage countries,” Sanders said.

PAYT mailing came today with a colorful glossy insert. That can’t be cheap. The “instructions” say that each trash barrel can only weigh 40 lbs. or it won’t be picked up.How does one determine exactly what their trash barrel weighs? The bags come in 15 and 32 gallon bags but each tenant will be throwing out different things which will weigh different amounts.

So, do we all invest in “trash barrel scales” to make sure we are in compliance with yet another rule? Should each person have their very own trash barrel – perhaps color coordinated with the yellow and purple PAYT bags? Oh, wait..that might make it too difficult for the drivers to easily identify or perhaps would confuse those neighbors who are actively asserting peer pressure to make sure we’re all in line.

Weekend Comedy Series: Janeane Garofalo

From 1995 in San Francisco, we have the droll, hipster comedy stylings of a young Janeane Garofalo.

She started out doing stand-up, and quickly moved on to TV and film roles. One of my favorite appearances was her guest spot on Viva Variety, in which she started to do stand-up but the hosts found it too depressing. They gave her a bad makeover and had her re-tell her jokes, but in a positive way. They suggested “Instead of ‘I hate Jenny McCarthy,’ how about you try “I LOVE Jenny McCarthy!’

Take the “B” Out of LGBTQ

The misappropriation of ‘bisexual’ into the collective initialism of LGBTQ remains one of the worst things to happen to human sexuality since the days of Leviticus.

It’s bad enough that both sides of the sexuality fence have wasted humanity’s precious time embattled over the black and white issue of straight versus gay but to drag bisexual people into this self-centered mess has no conscious behind it. Gay people’s action of taking “something for one’s own use, typically without the owner’s permission,” did a great disservice to bisexual people and to the future of our sexually.

All leaves and clippings must be in brown paper leaf bags and at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on scheduled leaf collection days. Acceptable waste…leaves, grass, clippings, garden waste, twigs, no branches larger than 1″ in diameter and 2 feet long. No other household trash is to be included.

NO PLASTIC BAGS or other containers will be accepted as the materials collected will be used for compost.

Brattleboro Solar Summer Campaign Promotes Local Power

Brattleboro homeowners, business owners, landlords, and renters who are interested in going solar will now have even more incentive. Local nonprofits, solar companies, and a credit union are teaming up to launch Brattleboro Solar Summer, a program to assist residents in choosing locally generated solar power.

The campaign will run from May 1 – September 30, 2015, with the goal of increasing the overall number of solar electric installations and the total solar capacity in Brattleboro. The campaign aims to have at least 100 Brattleboro residents and businesses install solar arrays or purchase solar capacity from community solar arrays.
