If anything annoys me more than bad planning for development of tranquil public green spaces, it’s boring furniture, and the impact of production on the planet and society. In the 25 years KM and I have been living in domestic bliss (careful here, KM) we have always looked at labels to see where things (food included) are produced before we buy them (always choosing local, regional or USA, first), carried our own canvas shopping bags and recycled, long before these now common practices were common.

Lending a Helping Hannaford – Suggestions for the Checkout Lane

Hannaford has made corporate decisions that play out in strange ways at the checkout aisle.

Having shopped for nearly half a century (and with a grandfather in the grocery business), when I’m ready to check out I put my groceries on the belt in easy bagging order. Heavy things, cans, bottles, and boxes go first, then the smaller, lighter things such as parsley or garlic.  A cashier could simply scan and pop it into the bag. We worked as a team to keep things moving along.

Not too long ago, I realized cashiers were scanning and piling all groceries to the other side without bagging anything. Only after all items had been scanned would any bagging occur. It was taking almost twice as long.

Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes – March 19, 2013

Brattleboro’s historic train station is up for discussion again at the next Brattleboro Selectboard meeting. Fulcrum Arts has abandoned their plans for the space, taking the board back to planning how best to use the building.

The Brooks House team is expected to ask the board for a tax stabilization agreement, the board will consider the nearly $5 million FY14 Utilities budget which includes an over-$635,000 deficit There will also be multiple grants from Homeland Security for more training and equipment, annual liquor and tobacco licenses will be renewed and more.

You can watch it all on TV or attend in person at the Municipal Center on Main Street. If you do go, you can bring up other issues not on the agenda during Public Participation and speak to anything on the agenda.

Curbside Compost – 500th Participant!

Jon Evans, Akley Rd. resident, was the 500th person to sign up for Curbside Compost!  Jon was awarded a year’s supply of GLAD compostable bags! 

Jon writes, 

“Thank you so much for the (year’s supply of GLAD compostable bags)! I am truly looking forward to participating in this composting project!  I will be looking forward to the email (saying) that I can come and get the container …  I will be sharing this project with everyone I know in town!”

Prenatal Yoga in Putney!

A new prenatal yoga class is starting in Putney at Medicine for the People (125 Main St Putney VT) on Mondays 5:30-6:45PM. 

Prenatal yoga is extremely beneficial for all women at any stage of pregnancy regardless of whether you’re an experienced yogi or have never done a downward dog in your life.

Brattleboro Representative Town Meeting Member Recruitment

Brattleboro Town Meeting Members of Districts 1, 2 and 3 will meet on Wednesday, March 20 to accept nominations to fill town meeting member vacancies. Appointments are for one year. District 1has four vacancies, District 2 has two vacancies and District 3 has three vacancies. Anyone interested in being considered for these positions should be present at Academy School on Wednesday, March 20, at 6:15PM to meet with their district prior to the Town School District’s 6:30 p.m. pre-town meeting information session at the same location. If you are not able to attend but wish to be considered for a position, call the town clerk’s office at 251-8129, prior to the meeting.

Anyone know if there are any upcoming rabies clinics in Brattleboro? There usually are this time of year, but so far the only one I’ve heard about is in Wilmington.

Public Talk – Introduction to Psychosynthesis

There will be an introduction to psychosynthesis on the evening of Wednesday, March 27th, at 6:30 p.m. in Brattleboro. The program includes a brief presentation on the principles of psychosynthesis, along with some experiential exercises and an overview of training opportunities in the field.

Psychosynthesis literally refers to the synthesis of the many aspects of the self into a more complete and whole experience of being. Developed by Dr. Roberto Assagioli, a contemporary of Carl Jung, psychosynthesis is used in the fields of counseling, mental health, social work, education and other related fields of human development.

Sandglass Theater’s D-Generation at the New England Youth Theatre, March 22-23

Sandglass Theater brings it’s newest piece to the New England Youth Theatre in Brattleboro for a special two-night limited engagement to kick off our national tour. D-Generation: An Exaltation of Larks is a full-length theater piece based on stories written collaboratively by groups of people with late-stage dementia. The work is performed by three puppeteers (the caregivers) and five puppets (the residents of a care-facility). Set to a compelling original score and striking animated video segments, D-Generation takes us into a world that is all too much a part of our lives.

Registration is Open for Third Annual Tour de Heifer — Sunday, June 9

BRATTLEBORO, VT — The third annual Tour de Heifer — a trio of scenic farm-to-farm rides — will again challenge dirt-road cyclists on Sunday, June 9.

The Tour, organized by Strolling of the Heifers and taking place on Stroll Weekend, will include 15-mile, 30-mile and 60 mile options.

The longer routes are designed for seasoned riders: there’s an elevation gain of nearly 4,200 feet on the 60-mile route, and 2,100 feet on the 30-miler. The 15-mile route is a challenging one for beginner riders, with nearly 1,400 feet of elevation gain.

Sanders Statement on VA Claims Backlog

WASHINGTON, March 13 – Here is the prepared opening statement by Chairman Bernie Sanders at a Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs hearing today into the claims backlog at the Department of Veterans Affairs:

During the last several weeks, the Veterans’ Affairs Committees in the House and the Senate held four hearings with veterans’ organizations. During their testimony, the leaders of the veterans’ organizations raised a number of concerns, but I think it’s fair to say that the No. 1 issue they raised is the very significant backlog that we have in processing claims for our veterans. I believe that is the No. 1 issue and that is why the first hearing the committee is holding under my leadership is addressing this issue.

Constitutional Amendment Sponsors Renew Push to Undo Citizens United

WASHINGTON, March 12 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today introduced a constitutional amendment to overturn a Supreme Court ruling that allowed unrestricted, secret campaign spending by corporations and billionaires. Rep. Ted Deutch (D-Fla.) filed the “Democracy is for People” amendment in the House.

The 2010 Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission undermined democracy by opening the campaign spending floodgates. Already nine states including Vermont and more than 300 cities and towns have passed resolutions calling for the ruling to be overturned.

Vermont Jazz Center Presents Karrin Allyson on Saturday, March 16th at 8 pm

When vocalist Karrin Allyson steps to the microphone, you can’t predict what style or language she’ll be performing in. The best part is, it doesn’t matter.

Allyson is referred to as a jazz vocalist, and has climbed to the pinnacle of the genre since recording her debut album, I Didn’t Know About You, in 1992. She is now regarded among the top vocalists in jazz. Releasing her 13th album last year, Allyson has put together a career that has brought her to top stages around the world, performing at major jazz festivals in Brazil, Japan, Australia and Europe, as well as the most legendary venues in the United States, including regular appearances at New York’s Blue Note and Birdland. Along the way, Allyson has garnered four Grammy Award nominations, most recently for her 2012 album ‘Round Midnight.

Beverage Service Training for Store Clerks, Cashiers, Restaurants, Clubs and Hotels Who Sell & Serve Alcohol & Tobacco

Beverage Service Trainings at the Marlboro College Graduate Center on Wednesday, March 13th and Thursday, March 14th. All employees who sell or serve liquor are required to be receive training every two years. Statistics show that employees who receive their required training directly from the DLC, rather than in-house, are less likely to fail a compliance check for selling tobacco or alcohol to minors.  The training is free and no registration is required, however, late attendees will not be admitted.
