Brattleboro OB/GYN & Four Seasons Midwifery, a department of Brattleboro Memorial Hospital is pleased to announce their CenteringPregnancy® site approval. CenteringPregnancy is a holistic childbirth program committed to the empowerment of pregnant women. “This is an exciting time for our practice as we offer CenteringPregnancy, a nationally recognized model of care,” said Cynthia Pearson, Director of Maternal and Child Health.

In CenteringPregnancy, pregnant women with similar due dates join together in a group with their healthcare provider. They receive all the components of prenatal care, including health assessment, education and support. There is a facilitated discussion of pregnancy, birth and newborn care as well as overall health, stress management, etc. Studies in sample populations show Centering care increases breastfeeding rates and duration of breastfeeding. Patient and provider satisfaction are higher than traditional care.

Primary Numbers and the Combined Anti-Trump

As the primary process rolls on, the media has tended to focus on the simplest form of result, declaring winners and losers in the tightest of races. But there is more to the aggregate numbers than simple winners and losers, state by state. A closer look at who voted for whom and where reveals some interesting things about both parties, not least of which is the power of the combined anti-Trump, about which more later.

First, the Democrats. Hillary Clinton has won a fair number of states so far, but not all of them were landslides. For instance, she “won” Massachusetts by a mere 1.4%, not exactly a mandate-making majority. She won Iowa by an even tinier margin of 4 votes, which translates to less than a third of one percent. Even in Nevada, her margin of victory was only 5%. These states are outside the deep south.

Next WBA Meeting on March 10th to Feature Q&A with District 1 Town Meeting Members

The next monthly meeting of the West Brattleboro Association (WBA) will be held on Thursday, March 10th at 6:00 PM in the Hayes Court Community Room on Garfield Drive (just west of the W Bratt PO). After a review of the treasury report, the WBA will discuss the status of the welcome signs and other pending issues.

A feature of this month’s meeting is the WBA hosting of District 1 Town Meeting representatives at 7:00 that evening. This is a chance for area residents to engage in an informal Q&A regarding the warrants for the upcoming March 12th Special Town Meeting which will specifically address the proposed police/fire facilities upgrade, and to engage them in a discussion about the March 19th Annual Representative Town Meeting. This part of the meeting will be facilitated by West Brattleboro’s own Orion Barber.

A Political Hypothetical

Imagine a voter that generally wants to vote for their party. In an election cycle, this voter likes one of the party candidates and supports them actively throughout the primary and caucus season, but their candidate falls short and another candidate becomes the nominee.

The voter wants to vote for their party candidate, because the other party is, of course, y’know… the other party. However, the voter finds their official party candidate to be repulsive, dangerous, icky, and generally bad for the future of the country.

Community Passover Seder

Please join Brattleboro Area Jewish Community for a community seder on the second night of Passover, Saturday April 23, 2016 at the West Village Meeting House at 5:30 p.m.  Main dishes will be catered by Sharon Myers, and Cantor Kate Judd will be leading us through a traditional Jewish seder. You don’t have to be Jewish to share this journey and feast with us – all families and individuals are welcome!

I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project Update: Week of March 6

I-91

To reduce congestion on I-91, both Exit 3 on ramps will be closed on Sunday, March 6, and Sunday, March 13 from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. I-91 will remain open.

Sunday afternoon closures of the Exit 3 on ramps will continue each weekend through the end of the ski season.

Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge. The new bridge will be 104’ wide and is designed to carry all four lanes of traffic –two northbound and two southbound.

The Sweetback Sisters forge their own sound by delivering arrangements that combine the soul of classic ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s-era country music with an undeniably contemporary edge. Emily Miller (vocals, fiddle), Zara Bode (vocals, guitar), Stefan Amidon (drums), Rob Hecht (fiddle) and Jason Loughlin (electric guitar) take their inspiration from the Davis Sisters and Louvin Brothers, as well as the spirited honky-tonk energy of Wanda Jackson and Loretta Lynn. Zara and Emily’s family-style harmonies reflect a deeply felt love for traditional country music styles and a palpable joy in playing and singing together, and the band’s signature mix of harmony singing, rollicking telecaster and twin fiddling is as infectious as it is heartbreaking.

Those of us who have met Dr. Cohan in his professional capacity, without doubt will remember him long after he is gone. I want to wish Dr. Cohan Bon Voyage, and to suggest that, in replacing him, BMH will be wise to find a physician who is empathetic and respects his or her patients.

Weekend Creativity Series – Finger Painting

Remember dipping your fingers into cool, wet paint and smearing it all across a piece of paper? Pushing it all around, getting it under your nails, and creating an abstract piece of school art? And the smell of that paint… mmm.

Here, Iris Scott uses that technique with great skill to finger paint with oils. It’s not as strange as it sounds, even though it isn’t done much. Most painters like brushes, but why not work directly, fingers to canvas?

Vermont Jazz Center Presents: Fred Hersch Trio

The Vermont Jazz Center is proud to welcome the legendary pianist Fred Hersch to its Cotton Mill venue on Saturday, March 12th at 8:00 PM. He will be performing with his working trio of Jon Hébert (bass) and Eric McPherson (drums). Hersch is one of the leading jazz pianists in the world. Through his commitment to originality, embrace of romanticism, mastery of the bebop language and chameleon-like ability to blend genres Hersch has carved out a unique niche that is—as Ellington would have said—“beyond category.”

Now in his late 50s, Hersch’s example serves as a bridge between younger players who have studied jazz formally and the old-school cats who learned on the bandstand and from recordings. He states that he “… learned in the oral tradition from older players” and he especially lauds any musician who has made it on their own and shaped their own voice. He affirms his own path on this road by saying “maybe that’s the reason why I sound like me – because nobody interfered with me. I didn’t take jazz piano lessons, I didn’t go through all that kind of nonsense – what I play is mine.”

Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes – March 8, 2016

The Brattleboro Selectboard will receive a report regarding downtown traffic lights and traffic flow at their next Tuesday meeting. They will also receive a final report from the Regional Economic Hub Committee and act on that committee’s recommendation to dissolve.

The board will assist local businesses via new policies and procedures for the Small Business Assistance program, and will places fines and fees on local businesses for failing to get a business license in a timely manner.
