Brattleboro. Vermont Partnership for Fairness and Diversity has revised its vision, mission, and position statements according to Dr. Ann-Marie White, president of the organization’s board of directors.
“We refined our vision, mission, and position statements after listening closely to the attendees at our 3rd Annual Vermont Vision for a Multicultural Future Conference held in early November,” states White. The participant-driven conference celebrated the completion of the first decade of Vermont Partnership’s four-decade in length Vermont Vision for a Multicultural Future Initiative. Formerly known as Facing Change: The Changing Face of Vermont, the initiative prepares the state, its leaders, and residents for an increasingly multi-racial/ethnic/lingual/cultural/abled landscape.
Sunday, November 23 there will be a contra dance at the “Stone Church” on Main St in Brattleboro. Dances will be called by Quena Crain, with live music from Everest Witman, Peter Siegel and Audrey Knuth. Witman, 16, is the youngest of this trio, and is a thoughtful, intelligent and clearly-spoken young man with the ability to laugh at himself. He and his band, Nova, appeared earlier this year at the Brattleboro Contra Dance to loud cheering and stomping from the crowd of dancers.
Witman is this year’s recipient of the Johnny Trombly Memorial Scholarship. The fund was established to support and encourage young musicians interested in playing instruments used for traditional New England dance music.
The November poetry readings at Brooks Memorial Library feature two outstanding Vermont and New Hampshire poets: Sydney Lea and Becky Sakellariou. They will read from their new works on Wednesday November 19, at 7:00 PM. in the BML 2nd floor meeting room. Arrive early to insure a good seat. The event is free and open to the public. The West Brattleboro Scoping Study was accepted and endorsed, with five varying options described, ranging from nothing to new bike and people paths through the backyards of West Brattleboro properties. Likely, a more simple approach of bike lanes and sidewalks will be attempted.
Brattleboro signed on to help the Windham and Windsor Housing Trust apply for a grant to do energy improvements at five local properties that they own, Brattleboro will apply for brownfield site planning funds, and a sustainable energy program feasibility study vanished from the agenda without explanation, but with discussion.
WASHINGTON, Nov. 18, – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said today that it would be “insane” to construct the Keystone XL pipeline to ship the dirtiest oil on the planet from Canada’s tar sands region to refineries along the Gulf of Mexico.
“The scientific community is telling us that we have a narrow window of opportunity to address the crisis of climate change and to transform our energy system away from fossil fuels and into energy efficiency and sustainable energy,” Sanders said in prepared remarks. “This legislation would move us in exactly the wrong direction toward not only more dependence on fossil fuels but on some of the dirtiest fossil fuel imaginable. That is insane.”
I know this is a very long shot but thought I’d give it a try. My son’s had a game in the 80s called “Crossbows and Catapults” which they loved. We were trying to find one of these for a reasonable price. EBay and Amazon have several ranging from $150 to $275 ….ridiculous.
So, I’m wondering if somewhere in the diverse land of ibrattleboro someone might have one of these languishing in their attic? As I said, I realize the chances are slim but thought it was worth a try. I’m happy to pay a reasonable price for it. Thanks!
BMH Physician Group announces the addition of Nancy J. Redfield, RN, MS, ARNP, BC to its Post-Acute Care Services.
Redfield will work with Eric Pofcher, MD to provide direct care for patients from the time of discharge from Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, or another acute care facility, to admission at a skilled nursing facility. Their duties include managing medical problems in post-acute medical episode recovery, stabilizing chronic conditions and supporting decisions for individualized end-of-life care.
I didn’t vote this year. For the first time in well over a decade, I was too annoyed to participate. Over the last six years, I’ve watched as the Democrats held power but proved unwilling or unable to wield it effectively. To make matters worse, those of us who fall left of center have been effectively stifled. Mainstream Democrats saw to that. So while many on the left fret about the Republicans and their Tea Party antagonists, I would argue that it was this stifling of discussion within the Democratic party that led to the debacle of the 2014 midterms. The Democrats are a party that is silently divided.
The Brattleboro Town school board is holding a public forum this coming Wednesday, 11/19, on the role and the effects of various standardized testing that takes place in our schools. This has been a point of lively discussion on iBrattleboro and it would be worth encouraging the school board to continue this process of public engagement by attending.
The forum takes place at Academy School on Wednesday, November 19, 6:00-7:30 pm.

BURLINGTON, Vt., Nov. 14 – Calling on the Postal Service to avert damaging service cuts and job losses, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) pointed to a new report today that revenue for the mail delivery service rose by $569 million during the fiscal year that just ended.
It was the second year in a row that profits rose, mainly because of increases in package deliveries to online shoppers.
Despite almost $1 billion in revenue growth over the past two years, the Postal Service is forging ahead with plans to shut down as many as 82 mail processing plants beginning in January. The closings would put 15,000 jobs in jeopardy.
Numerous opportunities for public comment exist at the next regular Brattleboro Selectboard meeting. Attend in person at the Municipal Center on Main Street to offer comment on plans to improve Western Avenue for bike riders and pedestrians in West Brattleboro, or to weigh in on the Windham & Windsor Housing Trust plans to rehab local buildings.

The Brattleboro Representative Town Meeting Human Services Review Committee will meet on Monday, November 17, 2014 at 6:00pm at 528 Goodenough Road.
